The earl is asked to call, and he does so, to find a woman of thirty there, who tells him a pitiful story of a deception of fifteen years before, and of which - his father was the cause. The late earl had promised her marriage, and only when her daughter had been born did he confess that he was already married. The woman In forms him that her daughter lies on the point of death, implores him to assist one who is his own half-sister. The earl consents, and becomes a regular visitor, doing all he can for the invalid. Unfortunately, accident makes his fiancee a witness of a visit, and she demands an explanation. Her lover's lips, are, out of respect to his own mother, sealed, until a servant's act places the earl's mother in possession of the facts, and, disregarding her own feelings, she explains everything, with the result that marriage is celebrated on the day fixed.
