Maria, the little shepherdess, is tending her sheep in Italy when she receives a letter from a girl friend in America, asking her to sell her flock and come to New York. She is delighted with the idea and is soon preparing to leave. ...See moreMaria, the little shepherdess, is tending her sheep in Italy when she receives a letter from a girl friend in America, asking her to sell her flock and come to New York. She is delighted with the idea and is soon preparing to leave. Antonio, a charcoal vendor and Maria's sweetheart, is disappointed in not having the means to accompany her, but later and after the exchange of letters, set sail to join her. Giovanni, a fruit vendor, has become enamored of Maria, and in his desperation, substitutes letters for those supposed to be from Antonio, telling her of his marriage in Italy, etc. This wins, by deception, the love that was not his to enjoy.
