The man becomes interested in his babies. The jealous husband reads into his actions an affair with his wife, puts the man out, and later orders his wife from the cabin. She leaves her babies. Years later the girls are grown. The oldest objects to the rigid rule of her father. A cattle dealer happens in the district and, attracted by her, makes his way to the cabin. The girls have discovered a small chest containing their mother's treasures. They find a miniature picture o£ her. The cattle dealer comes in at that time, followed by the father. The cattle dealer escapes, but is seen by father. It is the younger girl's first love. There is a quarrel between her and father, and she resolves to leave with the cattleman, taking her mother's miniature. Far from home in another mountain district, the truth breaks on the self-willed, ignorant girl. She leaves the cattleman and is protected by a woman, who has to board with her a young surveyor, who is going through the wild mountain district surveying tor a railroad. The woman agrees to keep her secret concerning the runaway with the cattleman. A love affair springs up between them. Back in the mountain the sister suffers her father's treatment and longs for her lost sister. Some time later the young surveyor marries the girl and is called some distance away to the very mountain district from which the girl came to survey for a certain tunnel. He leaves a note behind explaining his mission. His wife realizes he will meet her sister and will perhaps learn something of her past life. The woman comforts her, hears her story, sees the miniature, and realizes the girl is her daughter. The girl decides to face the truth and writes a letter with her mother to the husband, telling him to find the sister and bring her back with him. The letter arrives just as the husband is about to return after the survey. He has met the sister and wronged her. When she comes to him, he puts her off and shows her the letter and a picture of her sister and her mother. She realizes the impossibility of marriage; her sister is the wife of the man. The mountain lover has overheard, tells the father and they pursue to see justice done. Her own honor at stake and wishing to save her sister the pangs of her husband's death, she sacrifices her life for him. Her mountain lover seeks out the man but finds him with his wife and baby, and, for their sake, the husband goes unharmed. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
