He is determined to begin life afresh and find an honest career. Bill Blinkers, his mate before he was imprisoned, tells him of a big job that they might pull off together, but Slim wants nothing to do with it. A detective who knew of his previous connection to Bill Blinkers and wishes to find him, asks Slim to betray his hiding place. When Slim refuses, the detective threatens to find a means of returning him to jail and utterly refuses to believe that Slim wishes to be "on the square." Slim decides to make one big haul so that he will be able to get away from the country. The "crib" Slim means to "crack" is the home of police surgeon John Manners and his wife, who have long been on bad terms. On the night Slim enters their house, Mrs. Manners has written to her husband that she's ending it all, then she takes poison. Slim enters the room where she is lying unconscious on the floor, and stumbles over her body. He sees that she is still alive,, and when he finds the vial of poison by her side, he guesses that she attempted suicide. At once forgetting the danger of his being there, he yells for help, and the woman's child awakens and runs into the room. She tells Slim that the servant is away and that she is quite alone. Slim at once calls over the 'phone for a police ambulance and does all he can to revive the unfortunate woman. When the police surgeon enters the room he sees Slim's burglarizing tools and guesses what has happened. When he allows him to escape, Slim is filled with gratitude and resolves again to keep strictly to the straight and narrow path. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
