The concert begins with Saint-Saens "The Carnival of Animals," a zoological fantasy. The instruments imitate many animal sounds, including the braying of a donkey. Host Hugh Downs reads Ogden Nash's whimsical verses as artist List Weil illustrates the story. The second major selection is Benjamin Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra." Britten's composition demonstrates the role of every instrument by including solo performances for each. Other selections include "Seventy-Six Trombones," from Meredith Willson's musical comedy "The Music Man," and the Third Movement from Tchaikovskys "Swan Lake" ballet. See less
