Jim Halsey, betrayed by an unfaithful wife, goes from bad to worse, and finally in a seaman's den is rescued by Meg, a dope fiend, whose better nature has been aroused by the unfortunate condition of the sea captain. As the days pass the suffering of the underworld is most vividly portrayed. The pangs of drink and the hankering for dope among the flotsam and jetsam is shown. Captain Halsey has lost his position through drink, but not before he has incurred the enmity of Jed Blake, has first mate. Finally Halsey is cured of his desire for drink and he returns to his own ship much to the disgust of Jed Blake, who covets Halsey's berth. Meg, the poor unfortunate of the underworld, also is reformed, and she becomes a stowaway on Halsey's vessel. At sea the girl is discovered by Blake and other members of the crew, and as she is being insulted and abused by them. Halsey comes upon the scene and saves the girl. Blake and the others plot to take Captain Jim Halsey's life. Meg overhears the plot and informs Halsey, but too late to save him. There is a terrific struggle and both Halsey and Meg are stricken down and hurled overboard. They finally reach a barren island. There they are followed by Blake and the crew. Another fight ensues in which the girl, who loves Halsey, but who has been spurned by him, sacrifices her life that Halsey might be saved.
