Carlo, a Genoese spy, from his place of hiding among the draperies of the room, takes in the whole scene and therefore plans to steal the plans for both patriotic and personal reasons. Carlo and Paola are both in love with Marguerita, who returns Paola's love. Carlo, through the connivance of Paola's servant, steals the plan from his apartment. Carlo then goes before the council and accuses Paola of being a traitor. Council then calls on Paola to return the plans. He endeavors to do so by going to his apartment and there discovers that they have been stolen. He returns and tries to explain to the council, but is thrown into prison as a traitor. Marguerita, suspecting the true nature of affairs, dresses herself in male attire and invades Carlo's apartment, finds the plans in a secret panel and hides them on her person, Carlo then enters his apartment and demands to know the cavalier's business and just then discovers the secret panel is open. With an oath, he jerks the large cavalier from her head, which allows her hair to fall and him to discover it is a woman, Marguerita draws her sword and a wicked swordfight ensues, in which she is disarmed. In the meantime her servants who had been waiting for her below in a gondola, seeing Carlo enter the house, go for assistance, which arrives as Carlo is embracing Marguerita. Andreau, Marguerita's father, attacks Carlo and in a terrific sword combat drives Carlo back foot by foot, until he is close to an open window, through which he leaps into the river, where he is captured, brought to the Council of Ten, where he is sentenced to die by torture. Paola in the meantime being freed, and the end is Paola asking Marguerita's hand of her father, which he gives with his blessing. Written by
