Buck has the middle watch of the night herd, and the pleasant thoughts of Jessie make the time pass quickly. A stranger comes to the little western town and announces to the sheriff that he is on the square and intends to conduct a "gentleman's game." Jessie meets the gambler and finds much to admire in him. As time goes on Jessie becomes infatuated with the gambler and neglects Buck. Buck determines to watch the gambler as he realizes that the girl is attracted by the glamour which surrounds the man. One day Big Ted is called down by the sheriff, and words follow. Both men draw, and the sheriff is mortally wounded. Big Ted escapes. Buck arrives at that moment and sets out upon the bad man's trail, determining to bring him back, dead or alive. He tracks the fugitive down, succeeds in wounding him, and later brings him back. The sheriff dies, begging the boys to elect Buck Simmons to fill the vacancy. Buck is elected, and gives satisfaction. A short time after he takes the office, a sheriff from a neighboring county calls for aid in tracking a criminal and displays a postal giving a picture and description of the man. Buck recognizes the man as the gambler, whom Jessie seems to love. He decides to give the gambler a chance, and posts notices in such a manner that the gambler be warned. The gambler hurries to Jessie, and tells her that he is being hounded by Buck. Buck follows the gambler to the girl's house, and Jessie hides the gambler in a closet. Buck commands the man to come forward. The gambler runs out, and Buck confronts him. The gambler tries to brazen out, but finally confesses that he is guilty. Buck agrees to give him an hour's start toward the border. The gambler takes advantage of this, and is successful in reaching the border unharmed. Buck returns to the house, and finds comfort in Jessie, who has decided that Buck is the one she has loved all along. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
