Later his wife accidentally breaks the negative just as it is to be developed. The naturalist upbraids his wife and despite her pleadings he leaves the house in a rage. In his absence a wild beast attacks the wife and takes her life. The naturalist returns to his home in another land. However, his conscience will not permit him to rest. Always he is thinking of and having visions of the faithful wife whose life ended in the jungles. Later he falls in love with the counterpart of his dead wife. However, the marriage is never performed, for his conscience will not permit him to wed the girl. He finally resolves to live only for his mother, and then the terrible burden on his mind is lifted.
