At the same time Cambodian forces are also planning an invasion. With his country in dire peril the Siamese king approaches the Japanese settlers in his country and asks for their help. A young Japanese named Nagamasa is selected as the leader of the volunteer army and through his clever strategy Siam's enemies are defeated. Soon afterwards a revolt breaks out instigated by a Governor-General who is feared and hated for his cruelty. After Nagamasa defeats him in a hand-to-hand fight the Japanese wins the king's favour and is given the title of duke, a large residence and many other rewards. Later he marries a Siamese princess who bears him a child. However, the more Nagamasa wins the king's favour, the greater the jealousy of the Siamese ministers towards him. Immediately after the death of the king a civil war breaks out. Believing that his usefulness to Siam is ended Nagamasa takes poison after entrusting a faithful Siamese officer with the future of the country. His wife follows him into death after placing her child in the care of a Japanese. Thus the eventful life of Nagamasa Yamada ended far away from his native land. Written by JFDB See less
