A couple of weeks ago, Kardi Ai achieved MDR Class 2a certification, a significant milestone that has been acknowledged by the Czech medical community and prominent media outlets, including Forbes Czech (article link in the comments). This certification not only validates the hard work and dedication of the team behind Kardi Ai but also paves the way for numerous opportunities for future innovation and growth in cardiac health technology. While this certification is a milestone, Kardi Ai's real impact lies in its ability to transform how we approach heart health. Let's take a moment to explore the journey and progress that have brought us to this point. 📈 Progress in Cardiovascular Disease Treatment It's human nature to focus on negative news, often overlooking the tremendous progress happening around us. In the last 70 years, the average human lifespan has dramatically increased. In 1950, the average lifespan was about 68 years for women and 65 years for men. Today, those numbers have risen to approximately 84 years for women and 79 years for men - a remarkable extension of life by nearly 16 years on average! Cardiac healthcare, in particular, has been a significant contributor to this increase. Despite cardiovascular diseases remaining the leading cause of death globally, advancements in treatment have been saving millions of lives. Over the last 70 years, improvements in cardiac care are estimated to have saved more than 100 million lives worldwide - an achievement that often goes unnoticed in our day-to-day news. 💡Kardi Ai: Innovating for Preventive Cardiac Care My background includes a medical degree and I've seen firsthand the importance of prevention in healthcare. However, the reality is that most healthcare systems are optimized for treatment rather than prevention. Karel's HealthTech Chronicles #13 Dear readers, it's 2:17 a.m. Czech local time—a perfect moment to think about trends in digital healthcare. Today, I'd like to explore the following topics. The process of creating therapies by doctors will change. The time of hospital information systems as passive sources of information has passed. The era of intelligent systems is already on the horizon. Here in Czechia, we skipped one evolutionary step: clinical systems with a Medical Business Intelligence layer. It seems we're leaping directly from passive systems to intelligent ones. Let's now define what intelligent clinical systems mean. First, we need all available data about the patient, which means we must connect data from HIS, LIS, PACS, digital pathology, X-Rays, Ultrasounds, MRIs, CTs, PET/CTs, etc. Once we have this data, we can begin analysis. This analysis will be performed by machines. The long minutes spent reading data and trying to connect the dots are over. Sophisticated analysis will be delivered automatically with probable diagnoses. You, as a doctor, will also receive expert suggestions for therapy planning. You will have powerful tools that visualize problems and benchmark your patient's conditions. Voilà, a real medical digital companion is at your service. It's hard to predict how this will change the current level of medicine. We will have to learn how to use these powerful tools. Will it be about faster or more precise treatments? I am ready to observe the real-life impacts of this new technology. AI-enhanced systems are not sci-fi. They already exist, and the first doctors are beginning to adopt them. Yes, there are many questions, but the trend is clear. We must not forget to also mention functions like voice-to-text. The best results will be achieved once we merge these functions with intelligent AI models. Data handling in healthcare will almost redefine the term 'evidence-based medicine.' It will change clinical trials and the way they are performed. Imagine connecting clinical data with research data. I learned about some great examples of this recently, which I'll try to share with you later. It's time for certain managers in healthcare to add terms like FHIR or OMOP to their vocabulary and to understand precisely what they mean. The European Health Data Space (EHDS) is a great opportunity for Europe to discover the treasure in data. I already see how powerful the impact of this new regulation is on the daily lives of hospitals. It really helps move us forward. It's crucial to recognize that we must standardize and structure data to unleash the full potential of our medical knowledge. I really enjoy discussing healthcare data content management and its use for better care. We must not forget that everything we do in this sphere should benefit the patients. I will be attending several events this year and look forward to meeting all of you who are interested in the topics mentioned above. Good night.

The time has come to read a very interesting report: the GREENTECH REPORT POLAND 2024 prepared by Accelpoint, Taylor Economics in partnership with PKO BP, and EIT Climate KIC   We are delighted to see the presence of three of our portfolio companies (Solwena, The SmokeD wildfire detectors, and Waste24) in the cited report. EEC Ventures is at the forefront of green VC funds, as proven by the number of portfolio companies mentioned in the report in relation to the total number of all companies in the portfolio.   Our companies have verified and confirmed the market value of the technologies and their products. They have also established partnerships with large regional or global players, and their revenues are growing.   Both The SmokeD wildfire detectors and Waste24 are already generating revenue in foreign markets. Solwena is working with major international corporations and is in the process of negotiating agreements that will result in revenues from abroad. The report contains a very thorough analysis, starting from the good definition of concepts such as greentech, cleantech, climatetech, and many interesting analyses. The report paints a picture of a young and delicate ecosystem. Quantitatively, the community of 133 "green" startups is indeed a very small percentage compared to the 4,900 technological companies in Poland. These startups are in the early stages of development, they still have modest revenues, and individual investors dominate among the investors. VC funds associated with PFR Ventures are among the largest capital donors This early stage of the system is likely the reason why less than one-third of the described startups have sought R&D funding, which is usually an appropriate source of financing for projects at this stage. It is also surprising to note that Hungary and Lithuania have attracted more investment in this sector than Poland. Reading the entire report is highly recommended.

On November 22-24, IRON Lviv Tech Cluster and Civitta are organizing a hackathon for the recovery of Ukraine. I recently had a conversation with friends regarding the job market in IT. I'm sharing a short summary of the discussion: 1. Capital has stopped flowing to the new startups. (or the spendings returned to the pre-covid levels). 2. Software house industry in Poland depends on start-ups ecosystem as the software houses deliver the start-ups products. 3. Lack of new projects, forced the software houses to lay-off part of their teams. 4. During the pandemic, demand for IT bootcamps exploded - the IT job market was flooded with masses of people without experience or adequate training. 5. 2023 was a return in larger companies to the pre-covid situation and braking the 3-year anomaly of hiring frenzy in IT beyond its real needs. The hiring adjustments resulted in the series of lay-offs. 6. 2023 - GPT chat and generative artificial intelligence have caused temporary inertia and lack of IT/data decision-making in large companies as a result of the temptation that IT will no longer be needed because everything will be done by “artificial intelligence” anyway. 7. My bet is, the situation will slowly return to pre-Covid norm, oversupply of juniors will remain for some time. What's your opinion? Rewolucja AI, którą przewidzieliśmy w 2016 roku… (ENG) Back in 2016, together with Bartlomiej Rozkrut I stood on a stage of InternetBeta Conference, talking about AI, and the project we launched called Edward (AI powered intelligent assistant) - it was one of the first AI related presentations in Poland. And our journey with AI has been a rollercoaster. I had dozens of presentations for clients and conference speeches showing the potential of AI and numerous possibilities that are in front of us. We event started AI meetups, a regular event in couple of cities, which was gathering 200-300 people each. But by 2020-2021, interest had faded. It felt like we were shouting into the void. We thought we were glimpsing the future, but little did we know how much was still hidden from view. Then, suddenly, ChatGPT exploded onto the scene in 2022, and the world woke up to AI's potential. It's like looking at our old presentation through a time warp - so much has changed, yet the dream remains! Today, nearly every app we create involves using one of the AI API's. More than that, using no-code solutions you can achieve great results with days or weeks, not months or years. Howewer, most AI solutions feel like simple OpenAI wrappers with a new paintjob. I believe the real, transformative business applications are still to be developed! Meanwhile, tech giants march steadily towards "real" AI. OpenAI has unveiled a 5-step roadmap to "Artificial General Intelligence". Their five-step plan feels both thrilling and daunting. Are we ready for what comes next? Will we even notice the moment when AI transitions from tool to companion, from assistant to innovator? Will we wake up one day to a world reshaped by AGI, much like how AI quietly became part of our lives? As I look back at this first presentation, I see that we've come so far, yet the horizon seems more distant than ever. The path to AGI is not just a technological journey, but a deeply human one. It challenges us to rethink our roles, our purpose, our very definition of intelligence. What are your thoughts on this? Exciting times as the Czech government has digitized the citizen criminal record ("Výpis z rejstříku trestů"), making it accessible as a signed PDF! This modernization is long overdue, yet I encountered an unexpected hurdle recently. Starting a new job, the company requested a background check done by a US-based checking service. Surprisingly, the most challenging part was obtaining the criminal record. Despite sending a verifiable, government-issued electronic PDF, the checking service refused it, stating they don’t accept records directly from applicants. 🤔 Instead, I had to go through the traditional process: visiting CzechPoint, signing forms, and involving an attorney to request the record on my behalf. This had to be done via regular mail, with the usual uncertainty of postal services. 📮 This experience highlights a significant flaw in the e-government system: when digital solutions don’t integrate with international practices, they lose their value. The U.S. economy thrives on new (Anduril Industries) and old startups (NVIDIA, Google), from digital to heavy industries like Hadrian and Commonwealth Fusion Systems Fusion. Europe, however, faces challenges, with early-stage funding often only a fraction (less than 1/10th in case of fusion startups) of what U.S. startups receive and even our most important bets like Marvel Fusion relocating to the US. "In America, in addition to the state, people like Bill Gates, Salesforce founder Marc Benioff, or Jeff Bezos from Amazon are involved in fusion research with huge sums," and criticized: "Here everyone always looks to the state!" The answer isn’t more government grants or committees but cutting red tape: - streamlined company registration, investment and even closure processes - reduced bureaucracy when operating and employing cross-border - and a unified market. Europe’s ambitious founders need fewer regulatory hurdles, not 12+ month waits for EU grants. When we nail a modern European interface for founders and investors alike, capital will follow. The day started with VIP Breakfast, graced by the presence of Dariusz Standerski, PhD, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Digital Affairs in Poland. This exclusive event, organized by the Scandinavian-Polish Chamber of Commerce ( SPCC ), provided a unique insight into the daily routine of the Minister of Digital Affairs. It was revealed that the Minister begins each day by reviewing a report from the previous day, which often includes alarming statistics such as the fact that the infrastructure has been attacked over 300 times. This startling information underscores the severity of the situation, with Poland being the most attacked member state in the European Union. Poland's leadership in the European AI regulation landscape is a shining example of progress. A significant development on the horizon is the establishment of a new regulatory body, the Commission of AI Supervision. This entity's primary role is to reduce the liability for companies that adopt certified AI systems. This proactive step has the potential to significantly accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies, a positive development for the business landscape. Poland's approach to AI implementation is not just about certification; it's about inclusivity. A key component of this strategy is the establishment of an AI Fund. This fund will serve a dual purpose: to secure a steady stream of funding and to invest in research and the development of ethical standards. These measures are beneficial not only for large corporations but also for small businesses and local administrations. This will ensure that the implementation of AI technology at an everyday level does not rely solely on deploying GPT chat on a website. International expansion of a Polish-based eCommerce website built on Shopify. Is it possible? Well… 🌍💻 International expansion of an eCommerce website built on Shopify and registered in Poland is hard, or even hardly possible to do. Why? The reason is that here in Poland, we do not have Shopify Payments as a payment provider. So, if you have a store based on Shopify registered in Poland, you are not able to install Shopify Payments. Without it, you cannot sell in different currencies, and multicurrency functionality does not exist. 🚫 So, is there any chance to do it? Yes, as always, there are some other options. First option: Set up new stores for every market. For example, you would have one for the Eurozone, US, Canada, Australia, UK, etc. Each with the local currency. It is simple to do but hard to manage, especially if you have many locations. Additionally, the cost of ownership of these stores will be enormous. 💸🏬 Second option: Register a company in a country where Shopify Payments is available, such as the Czech Republic or Germany. Once you have a company there, you can easily set up Shopify Payments and use it as a payment provider, allowing you to sell in different currencies in different markets. 🏢💶 Last but not least: When will Shopify Payments be available in Poland?
