📊Excel is a powerful tool—but even the best of us make mistakes that can cost time and accuracy. Avoid these common pitfalls with our guide on the top 7 Excel mistakes (and how to fix them!). From absolute references to pivot tables, these tips will sharpen your skills and make your spreadsheets foolproof. Let’s get Excel-lent! ✨
1. Using Absolute References Incorrectly ❌ Mistake: Failing to distinguish between relative and absolute cell references when copying formulas across rows and columns. 💡Tip: Use $ to lock specific rows or columns when necessary. If you're calculating VAT on a sales amount using a fixed rate in cell A1 (20%), the formula =B2*A1 will work for one cell. But if copied, it will pull values from varying cells. Use =B2*$A$1 to lock the VAT rate. 2. Forgetting to Use the ‘Remove Duplicates’ Feature ❌ Mistake: Manually identifying and deleting duplicates in large data sets. 💡Tip: If you have a client list with potential duplicates, simply highlight the relevant columns and select "Remove Duplicates" to eliminate repeated entries. 3. Overcomplicating Formulas ❌ Mistake: Creating overly complex formulas that are hard to debug or modify later. 💡Tip: Instead of writing a long formula like =IF(AND(A1>10,B1<5,C1<>0),A1*B1/C1,"Error"), break it into parts, using helper columns for the individual conditions. This improves readability and reduces errors. 4. Not Using Conditional Formatting Effectively ❌ Mistake: Failing to highlight important data trends or errors using conditional formatting, relying solely on manual checking. 💡Tip: Use conditional formatting to highlight cells that exceed your budget by applying a red fill to any value higher than your specified limit, making problem areas instantly visible. 5. Not Saving Workbooks as .XLSM for Macros ❌ Mistake: Saving workbooks containing macros as .xlsx files, which don’t support macros. 💡Tip: If you've written a macro to automate monthly reporting, saving the file as .xlsx will strip out the macro. Save as .xlsm to keep the automation intact. 6. Using Hard-Coded Values Instead of References ❌ Mistake: Manually entering values into formulas instead of using cell references, making it difficult to update and audit later. 💡Tip: Instead of writing =A1*0.15 for a 15% tax calculation, reference a cell containing the tax rate (e.g., =A1*B1 where B1 is the tax rate). This way, if the rate changes, you only need to update one cell. 7. Neglecting the Power of Pivot Tables ❌ Mistake: Manually sorting and summarising data when a Pivot Table would do it far more efficiently. 💡Tip: Learn to use Pivot Tables to quickly summarise large datasets, perform analysis, and find trends without needing complex formulas. - #CIMAstudent #ACCAstudent #accountancystudent #Exceltips
