In Kubernetes, ensuring critical applications are scheduled on the appropriate nodes is crucial. This is where taints and tolerations come into play, working together to prevent pods from being scheduled on unsuitable nodes. • Taints are applied to nodes, allowing them to repel specific pods. • Tolerations are applied to pods, enabling them to be scheduled on nodes with matching taints. Without a matching toleration, a pod won't be scheduled on a tainted node and will be placed on the next available node instead. There are three taint effects that takes place: (1) NoSchedule: Pods without matching tolerations won’t be scheduled on the node, but existing pods remain unaffected. (2) PreferNoSchedule: The control plane avoids scheduling pods without matching tolerations on the node, but it’s not guaranteed. (3) NoExecute: Pods already running on the node without matching tolerations are immediately evicted. When you create a Kubernetes cluster with say, a bootstrap method like Kubeadm, there are a few static Pods that get created. For example, the API server and Etcd. These static Pods receive IP addresses from the host network, not the internal Pod network with the CNI. In fact, the Control Plane itself when accessed typically hits the API server, which is another reason why it’s so drastically important to ensure that the host network is running as expected. When you run Kubeadm as your bootstrapper, you’re specifying the host network where the control plane is running. That’s how the API server is accessed. The Kubernetes maintainers recommend to setup the host network so that the default gateway IP is the one that Kubernetes components auto-detect and use from the host network. #kubernetes #devops #platformengineering

**DEPLOYING VOTING APP ON KUBERNETES.** This project is about the deployment of a Voting App that is developed with the microservice architecture. This app makes use of * Postgresql DB * Redis For this app to work, it is divided into 5 different pods on Kubernetes cluster. I made use of Minikube on my local machine. 5 pods was created: - Redis - Postgresql - result page - voting page - worker page 4 services were created 1. DB service with ClusterIP because it works in the background and does not require access by the users. 2. Redis service also with a Cluster IP 3. Voting Service and Result service are deployed with NodePorts so as to give access to users to be able to use the app. Using Kubernetes, I was able to connect all pods as well as their service. They expose them for external access for a complete app to run.

Recently one of my client was facing immediate pod restart issue. We argue a lot if this is an application or infra issue. Though exit code was clearly saying the issue was application related, and not much to be done by me (an infra guy), still I gave extra effort to check if I can help with any further information/guide.
