It's the end of an era! AB de Villiers' retirement from all forms of professional cricket has sent a wave of melancholy across the world. The legion of the South African batsman's fans will no longer be heard, especially when the Indian Premier League (IPL) comes around as played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He had quit international cricket in 2018 but continued to play for franchises across the world. The legendary cricketer had not made an appearance in South Africa colours in over three years but continued to dazzle in all his glory in the IPL. Among the most respected cricketers of his generation, de Villiers has had a tremendous impact on the game. Heartfelt reactions poured in from fans, the cricketing world and also from eminent personalities after he announced his retirement. Sharing a post on social media, de Villiers penned a long note announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket. He wrote, "It has been an incredible journey, but I have decided to retire from all cricket. Ever since the back yard matches with my older brothers, I have played the game with pure enjoyment and unbridled enthusiasm. Now, at the age of 37, that flame no longer burns so brightly. That’s the reality I must accept - and, even if it may seem sudden, that is why I am making this announcement today. I’ve had my time. Cricket has been exceptionally kind to me. Whether playing for the Titans, or the Proteas, or RCB, or around the world, the game has given me unimagined experiences and opportunities, and I will always be grateful. I would like to thank every teammate, every opponent, every coach, every physio and every staff member who has travelled the same path, and I am humbled by the support I have received in South Africa, in India, wherever I have played." He added, "Last, I am aware that nothing would have been possible without the sacrifices made by my family - my parents, my brothers, my wife Danielle and my children. I look forward to the next chapter of our lives when I can truly put them first." His wife Danielle penned a heartfelt note as well for her cricketer husband. As the posts went viral, cricket fans could not stop themselves from thanking the South African cricketer while noting his best outings and performances. Pictures of de Villiers with his wife Danielle and kids too went viral on the internet. (All photos: Instagram)
