In the PEOPLE exclusive trailer for Survival of the Thickest season 2, Mavis — played by Michelle Buteau, who co-created the series with Danielle Sanchez-Witzel and executive produces it alongside showrunners Amy Aniobi and Sanchez-Witzel — travels to Rome to prove her love for Luca (Marouane Zotti). “If you like Emily in Paris, then you’re gonna love Mavis in Rome!” she declares in the trailer. The Best Original Series on Netflix to Stream Now But things don’t seem to work out, as Mavis returns to New York City and mopes into the arms of her best friends Khalil (Tone Bell) and Marley (Tasha Smith). “I was a zombie but now I’m back from the dead!” Mavis declares. Courtesy of Netflix However, later in the trailer, Luca reappears and Mavis tells him, “I gotta make this big life decision.” Mavis does decide to embrace the last year of her 30s and celebrates with a dance from a pantsless firefighter. “Can I just say, 39 is going to be an amazing year! Why was I so scared of it?” she asks Khalil and Marley. Khalil might have an idea. “You still trying to have kids?” he wonders. Vanessa Clifton/Netflix But Marley quickly comes to Mavis’s defense. “Why would you ask her something like on her birthday?” Marley remarks. Mavis’s next chapter includes focusing on designing clothes for plus-size consumers. “Thick girls, we ain’t just the moment, we the movement, honey!” Mavis declares in the trailer. The Tyler Twins/Netflix In order to “make plus-size high fashion a reality,” Mavis decides to into business with Marley, who appears to have a new love interest. “It’s been a long time since I felt like this,” Marley says before she kisses someone in the trailer. As for Khalil, he heads to therapy in an attempt to move past a creative block. “You ask a lot of questions for somebody I don’t know! You wearing a wire?” Khalil says to his therapist. Bell, 41, reflects on the uniqueness of showing a Black man going to therapy on TV. “You don't really see that often,” he tells PEOPLE. “You get a chance to see him speak to, I would say, multiple groups about it and then not being embarrassed about talking about it. Courtesy of Netflix That includes being a “good platonic friend” to Mavis as she goes through major changes in her life as well. “He's trying to be encourage Mavis to chase her dreams and Marley to quit talking so loud and listen sometimes,” Bell says. “He's just in a period of trying to figure out what the next step is, which I think all of them are. But he's hopeful.” The Best Comedies on Netflix to Stream Now According to Smith, 54, Marley will be getting vulnerable in season 2 also thanks to her new relationship. “She's just madly in love,” Smith tells PEOPLE. “This is the first time you really get to see Marley vulnerable when it comes to relationship because she's always been in control of everything.
