9-1-1: Jennifer Love Hewitt Is Abducted by a Serial Killer After Angela Bassett Realizes 'Something's Not Right' (Exclusive)

In PEOPLE's exclusive look at the return of '9-1-1', things get personal for LAFD and LAPD as one of their own is taken

9-1-1 is coming back with a major bang.

Following a three-month hiatus, Los Angeles Fire Department's Station 118 is back for more on Thursday, March 6 — and things get more personal than ever.

In PEOPLE's exclusive trailer for the episode, Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) takes a 9-1-1 call for a woman who's seemingly been abducted, but what looks like a hostage situation at first glance quickly evolves into something far worse.

"Something's not right about this," Athena (Angela Bassett) says, and her husband Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) agrees. "Almost nothing is right about it," he says.

Athena then realizes that the man they thought had abducted a woman is actually "a damn serial killer."

The revelation leaves Howie (Kenneth Choi) concerned for his wife's safety. "I'm not leaving your side while there's a damn serial killer with a grudge still on the loose," he tells Maddie.

"He's not gonna come after me with every cop in Southern California on his tail," Maddie insists — but then that's exactly what happens.

With one of their own taken from them, the firefighters at Station 118 and the LAPD are all hands on deck to find Maddie before it is too late.

Per the episode's logline, while Maddie "takes a 9-1-1 call that sets her on a quest for answers," the 118 has another crisis on their hands as it "responds to a fire at a local animal shelter and races to evacuate all the animals."

Given that Maddie and Howie, better known as "Chimney," are newlyweds. They finally tied the knot in season 7 after years of buildup and a surprise proposal in season 6 — her abduction will be all the more dramatic for the team.

Last season, Hewitt, 46, said in PEOPLE's exclusive behind-the-scenes video from filming the wedding that getting to see Maddie and Chimney's love story evolve has been "amazing."

"My very first day of work, Tim [Minear, an executive producer] was like, 'What do you want to do on 9-1-1 as Maddie?' I said, 'I want Maddie to fall in love with Chimney.' And he was like, 'Why? You guys just met.' I was like, 'There is just something about him that feels right for her and I think it would be really good. And we got to do it!"

She continued of her costar, "[Choi is] like truly one of my favorite people on the earth and we just love Maddie and Chimney so much together. And the audience really responded to it and when that happens, it's just like magical."

"It has been a long time coming," Hewitt said of her character's wedding. "I think it feels more like that for the audience than for us. I think they've been waiting a long time, but I'm excited. It's really good."
