Trustco shares surge 49% Trustco continues to demonstrate its ability to generate above-average investment returns. During the interim review period, Trustco's Net Asset Value (NAV) increased by 9.5% from N$1.15 billion (USD 62 million) to N$1.26 billion (USD 68 million) during the last six months. The NAV per share similarly grew to 128.2 cents, from 117.1 cents. The Group's profit for the 6 months ended 29 February 2024 was N$110 million (USD 6 million), compared to a loss of N$250 million (USD 13 million) in the previous corresponding period. Millionaires don’t usually live in wealthy neighbourhoods. I was reminded of this yesterday, when I was talking to a friend about the book ‘The Millionaire Next Door’ (by Stanley and Danko). It’s such an interesting book, and the title is very apt. The authors set out to survey millionaires in the 1990s, expecting to find them in wealthy neighbourhoods. But they couldn’t find enough millionaires to survey in those areas. Instead, they discovered that many millionaires were living in ordinary homes and driving everyday cars. This challenges the common stereotypes about wealth and highlights a powerful truth - true wealth often goes unnoticed. 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝘁𝘀 The Reserve Bank is expected to reduce the cash rate by 0.35 percentage points by mid-2025, and to then keep lowering it, according to a survey of 29 economists by The Conversation. On average, the economists expect the cash rate to fall from 4.35% to 4.00% by June 2025. Of the 29 economists, 24 expect the cash rate to be lower by June 2025 than it is now, while four expect it to be the same and one expects it to be higher. The cash rate is then expected to keep falling, reaching 3.70% by the end of 2025 and 3.50% by the end of 2026. If the forecasts are true, that would mean home loan interest rates would start declining from 2025. #property #realestate #homeloans

Where an SMSF received a trust distribution in the 2024 income year, does the fund need to lodge a Trust Income Schedule if it only derived exempt current pension income for the year (i.e., where the fund is 100% in retirement pension phase for the entire year)? This was a common question from attendees at the NTAA’s recent Super Schools seminar series, as there is some confusion amongst tax practitioners regarding the ATO’s requirements. The confusion arose because the ATO’s instructions for the 2024 Trust Income Schedule indicates that an SMSF that is 100% in retirement pension phase does not need to lodge the schedule. Despite this, tax agents who had queried the matter directly with the ATO were advised to lodge the schedule anyway. NTAA recently sought clarification from the ATO on the matter. Importantly, the ATO has confirmed that an SMSF must lodge a Trust Income Schedule with its SMSF tax return if it received a trust distribution during the income year, even if the fund is 100% in retirement pension phase for the entire year. Based on our feedback, the ATO has also advised it is currently reviewing the Trust Income Schedule instructions.

Banking sector records improved liquidity The banking sector experienced a notable improvement in liquidity during October 2024, with average liquidity levels rising to N$6.7 billion, up from N$5.9 billion in September. There is a lot of debate about whether the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) will begin cutting interest rates later this month after headline CPI inflation unexpectedly dropped to 4.6% in July. Whether the SARB will cut will depend in large part on whether the members of its Monetary Policy Committee expect inflation to return to 4.5%, the mid-point of the inflation target, over the medium term. One way central banks assess the outlook for inflation is using measures of underlying inflation pressures. But there are many ways to measure underlying inflation making this a source of disagreement among economists. Core inflation, that excludes food, non-alcoholic beverages, fuel and energy fell to below the mid-point of the inflation target to 4.3% in July. We showed in an earlier post that the share of 5-digit items growing above the mid-point inflation target of 4.5% fell below 50% in July for the first time in recent months. Codera’s core inflation measure, CPI-Common, however continues to suggest that it is too early to call the abatement of inflation pressures in South Africa. Our measure suggests that there remains more broad-based inflation pressure than implied by the Statistics SA core measure of underlying inflation and its trimmed mean measure. As we argued earlier, measures of trend inflation have also been higher than Statistics South Africa’s core measure. What is two pot retirement system? The “two-pot” system was established by The Revenue Laws Amendment Bill (the Bill). The two pot retirement system is a pension fund management approach which enables members of a retirement/pension fund to access a small portion of their retirement savings before they retire. A portion (one-third) of the worker’s retirement savings is allocated to a separate annuity pot (the second pot). The remaining benefits (two thirds)of the members fund referred to the “first Pot” will remain preserved up until such a time where the member retires. It must be considered that a minimum of R2 000.00 (Two Thousand Rand) can be withdrawn, meaning if you have less than R 2 000.00 (Two Thousand Rand) in your savings pot, you cannot withdraw. NB! You are only allowed to withdraw once in a tax year this means between 1st of March and the 28th of February. The Two Pot system requires individuals to take investments risks and further to make decisions when it comes to their retirement income. Therefore, it is essential for South Africans to research and understand the system and further to consider the risk and financial goals when managing their retirement goals.
