Venture Capital and Private Equity Principals
New Zealand Growth Capital Partners Backing the bold to foster innovation. Aspire seed fund and Elevate venture fund
About us
NZGCP was established by the Crown to address the capital and investor capability gaps in New Zealand’s technology start-up ecosystem. We’re building towards a self-sustaining early-stage capital market and partner with other investors to support Kiwi start-up companies and give them the leg up that they need to succeed. To do this, our Aspire fund invests directly into high-growth tech companies at proof of concept, seed, and early expansion investment stages. Whilst Elevate is a $300m fund of funds programme that invests into venture capital funds and is aimed at filling the Series A / B capital gap. We also encourage market development through sponsorship and programme support.

We’re excited to share our investment in Advemto Ltd.; backing world-class technology and the ambitious vision of Justin Hodgkiss and his team! By combining ultrafast spectroscopy with high-plex systems, Justin and the team have created a “high-definition camera” for biological samples. This breakthrough transforms complex, blurry data into clear, actionable 2D barcodes, allowing hundreds of biomolecules to be analysed in a single test. Why does this matter? 1. Revolutionising pharmaceutical R&D – The potential for streamlined drug development is huge. 2. New frontiers for future medicine – From personalised medicine to early-stage cancer detection, this technology could open doors where traditional methods fall short. Justin’s journey—from his PhD days in Boston to championing high-tech entrepreneurship in NZ—fuels his commitment to making scientific innovation accessible and impactful. We’re proud to back a founder and technology poised to make such a meaningful difference in the near-future. Here’s to transforming science into solutions!
We’re thrilled to have completed the first close of our Seed raise, with Movac Emerge Fund 4 leading the round, supported by NZ Growth Capital Partners, K1W1 LIMITED, and Icehouse Ventures. Advemto’s unique optical technology could be as revolutionary for hi-plex biomarker mapping as low-cost DNA sequencing was for genomics. Pharmaceuticals companies, clinical diagnostics labs and research labs rely on fluorescent labels to map biomarkers associated with disease and treatments. But currently, significant time and money is wasted on iterative panel design and low throughput analysis, because current optical detectors cannot sufficiently distinguish or quantify mixtures of fluorescent labels. With this Seed investment, Advemto will build a new generation flow cytometer that incorporates its 2D barcode reader – making it possible to resolve panels of fluorescent labels, instantly, precisely, and quantitatively. The team couldn’t be more excited to be opening this next chapter in life science tools, and we are grateful to many people who have supported our journey so far Kylie Price, Cather Simpson, Andrew Chen, Kevin Sheehy, Matt Trau, Nick Wilson, Andrew Coy, Wellington UniVentures, Daniel Batten, James Cameron, Quidnet Ventures, Booster NZ, Matū Group, SIP Innovation, The MacDiarmid Institute, and many many others! And stay tuned for more investment announcements on our rolling close........

The 2024 Young Company Finance report is now live! This release is made possible through our key collaboration partner, Angel Association New Zealand, and our valued partners across New Zealand’s investment landscape. The first half of 2024 saw a notable slowdown in the startup ecosystem, with both the number of deals and total investment dropping for the first time since the post-COVID recovery. However, a positive trend has emerged, with investors increasingly reallocating capital to support their existing portfolio companies. Seed-stage companies led the capital-raising activity, representing 83% of all transactions, reflecting strong investor confidence in early-stage ventures despite the economic challenges. Additionally, deep-tech companies continued to capture significant interest, making up over 50% of all deals during H1 2024. Access the full report on our website (link in comments) or a detailed breakdown of trends and insights from our collaboration partner Bridget Unsworth Chief Executive at AANZ and James Pinner, Chief Investment Officer at NZGCP. A special thanks to our contributors Angel HQ, ArcAngels NZ, UniServices, Blackbird, Climate VC Fund, Cure Kids Ventures, Enterprise Angels, Even Capital, GD1 (Global From Day One), Icehouse Ventures, Maker Partners, AIM - Angel Investors Marlborough, Motion Capital, Movac, Nuance Connected Capital, Outset Ventures, Pacific Channel, Snowball Effect, Sprout Agritech, and WNT Ventures.

Bold ideas. Big dreams. It doesn’t get much bolder and bigger than OpenStar! Congratulations to Ratu and the entire OpenStar Technologies team on hitting an incredible milestone. We are proud to have been early supporters of Ratu and this remarkable team who embody truly ambitious kiwi innovation. Special shout out to Angus Blair and Outset Ventures for being early believers and leading the first round, also to co-investors Blackbird and K1W1 on backing kiwi ambition.
On October 31st, we achieved our first plasma, a milestone 2 years in the making. This video is the moment our team watched the flash of light that reflects a rigorous work ethic, perseverance and collaboration within our team and community. Although this marks a major achievement for OpenStar, it is only the beginning of our journey toward clean, abundant energy for New Zealand and the world. . . . #cleanenergy #plasma #newzealand #dipole
