Finally, after months of the government talking down the positive impact contractors have in the public sector, it was refreshing to hear Minister Brooke van Velden do a 180 at an Auckland Business Chamber event last Tuesday, where she heaped praise on the value contractors deliver to the NZ economy, saying things like: "From an economic perspective, enabling flexibility in working arrangements increases productivity and incomes by allocating resources more effectively and increasing output per hour worked" "[Contracting] can also improve income security by expanding opportunities for short-term employment." "Contracting can be a stopgap between roles, or a way to re-enter the job market, or to allow time to establish their own personal business on the side of ongoing contracts" These messages came in stark contrast to the wider government's previous stance on contractors, which has resulted in public sector organisations having to reluctantly ramp down these vital parts of their workforce in the name of driving more government 'efficiency'. Given that the Minister for Workplace Relations & Safety has now highlighted the true value and efficiency of NZ organisations using contractors alongside core salaried staff, the government should now realise some of those efficiencies by reversing its policy of cutting government contractors. If they won’t do that, then perhaps Brooke van Velden needs to quickly retract her statements before public sector leadership takes it as a Government directive to do otherwise... Unless, of course, this whole 'love for contractors' isn’t actually about resource efficiency after all – it’s about reducing the rights of underpaid workers in the gig economy… Christopher Luxon Andrew Bayly Kirk Hope Sinead Boucher Katie Bradford
