  • 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 In this week’s insights, we discuss three of the latest developments in the healthcare industry. 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 As we head into the second half of November, we turn our attention to the annual Movember activity, which focusses on increasing awareness of various aspects of men’s health. A recent study published in Nature has presented new gene faults and evolutionary patterns contributing to the development of testicular cancer. The researchers used whole genome sequencing on 60 patient samples from the 100,000 Genomes Project. Key findings that may help improve treatments include new potential cancer drivers, evolutionary trajectories of genome alterations, and a genomic immune mechanism unique to testicular germ cell tumours. Despite the low absolute numbers of patients in these groups, clinicians are concerned about the rising trend given the reasons behind it remain unclear. Lifestyle and dietary habits, as well as potential genetic components, likely play a role. The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends that adults of average risk, aged 45–75 years, receive regular colonoscopies every 10 years or a CT colonography or flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years. The study included 5,391,231 participants with complete smoking histories from 2006 to 2008, followed through 2019. The researchers found that light ex-smokers experienced a rapid reduction in CVD risk, with their levels resembling those of never-smokers shortly after quitting, while heavy ex-smokers may require more than 25 years for their CVD risk to approach that of individuals who have never smoked. The researchers emphasised the importance of preventing smoking initiation altogether. • 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 𝗔𝗜 In this week’s insights, we discuss recent news regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in healthcare. This transfer will integrate Whakarongorau's telehealth system into a single platform, which promises to increase operational efficiency by implementing artificial intelligence (AI) tools. ‘This agreement with Microsoft will allow us to deliver secure, seamless services across digital and AI platforms, ensuring we meet New Zealanders’ needs wherever they are,’ said Mike Mulvaney, Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Whakarongorau. The FDA is working to promote AI best practices globally through the International Medical Device Regulators Forum and accommodate AI in clinical trials through the International Council for Harmonisation. The published perspective highlights the need for flexible mechanisms, transparency and proficiency in regulating AI. It also emphasises life cycle management and post-market performance monitoring, especially for large language models (LLMs) and their uses. Dr. Zeina Morcos, co-author of the study, presented her findings at the #CHEST 2024 annual meeting in Boston. The study compared the abilities of two AI models, ChatGPT -3.5 and DoximityGPT, in diagnosing PE. It found that both models could successfully reach conclusions that aligned with clinicians’ assessments and diagnoses of PE made using CT angiography (CTA). DoximityGPT, in particular, showed high diagnostic accuracy, matching clinical diagnoses in 7 out of 10 cases. • 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘀 This week’s medical communications post focuses on three of the latest insights in the world of #MedComms. A guide on medical publication professionals’ earnings The latest article in the MAP Newsletter of the ISMPP (International Society for Medical Publication Professionals) provides a guide on the compensation of publication activities in healthcare. Regional and international regulations have been put in place to answer the dilemma of ‘who gets what’ for contributing to a publication. These regulations aim to protect the efforts of patients and authors, as well as limit bias and conflict. The article contributes to the debate regarding compensation in publications by presenting practical examples and resources. Further reading: https://lnkd.in/gPv_Xkjr How to ensure the latest medical evidence is reaching healthcare professionals? In a recent webinar published by EPG Health, expert speakers discuss how a smart digital approach can make scientific data more accessible to healthcare professionals (HCPs). HCPs often face challenges accessing relevant medical data and scientific information. Pharmaceutical companies struggle to cater to HCP needs, often targeting only prescribers and neglecting the broader HCP community. A smart digital approach can improve accessibility by improving access, personalising content and delivering it through the right channels at the right time. View the complete on-demand webinar here. https://lnkd.in/gRQSCHNF Effectively delivering medical education through content A webinar organised by Reuters Events explores ways of developing content to deliver medical education and build trust with healthcare professionals (HCP). The speakers aim to dissect various topics, such as developing strategies to balance independent and company-led medical education to meet modern HCP demands, effectively using educational content to engage HCPs and bridging medical education gap. Online registration for the webinar is now open, while the webinar itself takes place on 7 November. 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝟮-𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗲𝘀 Breast Cancer Awareness Month marks a period of the year in which healthcare professionals and organisations worldwide aim to raise awareness of the importance of diagnosing and treating breast cancer early. In a recent interview with the American Journal of Managed Care, Dr. Michael Hassett, a medical oncologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, speaks about his presentation on targeted therapy innovation as a key strategy for improving outcomes and reducing costs in cancer care. In breast cancer, HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) is a crucial target. Scientists have come up with significant innovations in treatment over the past 20 years, but questions remain about which patients need which treatments. Emerging concepts like HER2-low and HER2-ultra-low, as well as targeted treatments for ER-positive breast cancer, promise to transform treatment plans. Link to the full interview: https://lnkd.in/gcBN37gu 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗗𝗔 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗿𝘆𝘀𝘃𝗼 𝗥𝗦𝗩 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Pfizer's Abrysvo RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) vaccine for adults aged 18 to 59 years with an increased risk for the disease. This approval expands on the vaccine's existing indications for older adults and pregnant women, making Abrysvo the only RSV vaccine indicated for adults aged 18 to 49 at increased risk. The vaccine is intended for adults with certain chronic conditions, such as obesity, diabetes and heart failure, who are at higher risk of developing and being hospitalised for RSV-associated lower respiratory tract disease. Link to the FDA statement: https://lnkd.in/gtYh9MgZ 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗵𝘆𝗴𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳 A study published in the Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health found that listening to music and following sleep hygiene advice significantly improved sleep quality and insomnia severity in pregnant women. The study included 98 women who were at least 25 weeks pregnant and reported poor sleep quality. The participants were randomly assigned to either the Music and Sleep Hygiene (MSH) or the Sleep Hygiene (SH) group. Both interventions showed improvements in sleep quality, insomnia symptoms, depression, anxiety and stress levels. Thus, music and good sleep hygiene can potentially replace medications for pregnancy-related insomnia.
