At the #Trefdag24 Vlaanderen Digitaal, Stijn (Stan) Christiaens of Collibra, in the panel discussion on the trustworthy use of data in Europe, does not agree with the statement that "Europe has already lost the #AI race". The race has only just started, and Europe has some major assets (European LLMs, European data) that we can still leverage to become globally competitive in AI.

Yesterday, the STIPP initiative officially launched with a bang! STIPP stands for SME Transition Innovation Partner Projects and their electronic system to apply for funding for SMEs is now OPEN until the end of March 2025!   This lighthouse project is here to help small and medium enterprises in the Meuse-Rhine region boost their competitiveness and innovation strength.   The event was opened by the Governor of the Provincie Limburg, Emile Roemer, who highlighted the Meuse-Rhine region's advantages for SMEs. Marie-Aline DELTENRE, the representative of the European Commission, underlined how important SMEs are for Europe and how thrilled the European Union is to support the initiative. Dr. Tobias Traupel from the Ministry of Economic Affairs also shared his excitement for this project that will support SMEs in the border region.   Leandra Schmitz from LIOF, Kurt Peys from VLAIO - Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and Frédéric Erpicum from Wallonie Entreprendre, have all shared some recommendations for SMEs as to how to apply as well as their insights and recommendations for successful cross-border cooperation.   Finally, the participants heard the inspiring story from ★ Rob Schalker ⚡️ 🎣 who turned his idea of a clothing brand into a global brand.   Now, it's your time to shine! Common challenge, common action | Within the European Union, product #legislation has been developed to ensure consumers can trust the #safety of the products they purchase. But, we’re facing an enormous increase of the number of parcels sent by non-EU websites directly to end users, like you and me. How to ensure the safety of this high volume of products? That’s the common challenge EU legislators, national legislators, customs and market surveillance authorities are facing. We in the Netherlands play an important role in that, considering the high volume of non-EU consumer products that is being shipped to the Port of Rotterdam. Just because consumers order on a website ….. Our common challenge has to lead to common action. That’s why a delegation of the European Commission (DGGrow DGTAXUD, DGJUST) was invited by a common initiative of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat, Dutch Customs (Douane Nederland) and the Dutch market surveillance authorities, including the Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NVWA) (The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority). Following their visit to the operations of Dutch Customs in the Port of #Rotterdam, we welcomed the group in our Zwijndrecht laboratory for physical, mechanical and electrical product safety. We used the opportunity to explain a bit more about our strategic priorities at The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority. I mentioned the development and use of contemporary and innovative supervision methods, collaboration with data, machines and sensors. Innovative methods enable us to work more risk based and to stimulate and assist economic operators in compliance. International collaboration is key. Products, AI, companies, technology or risks are not limited to one single country. We operate in one European Union, so we have to take common action, a coordinated EU approach for #ecommerce. This starts with what we practised during the visit of the EU delegation: close contacts between policy makers, executive agencies and inspection agencies, within countries and on EU level. #TUDelft and #CROW have investigated the interactions between human drivers and automated vehicles in mixed traffic in the #SAMEN project, which is essential for a transition to fully automated driving.  The project focused primarily on driving behavior, and the scientific results have been published in academic journals. A brandnew CROW publication produced by Marco Van Burgsteden (CROW) translates the scientific insights into practical applications for professionals, such as road authorities and driving education providers. With input from CROW, #RDW, and #Rijkswaterstaat, a systematic approach has been followed according to the CROW #assetmanagementmodel, aimed at #health, #safety, the #environment, and #accessibility. On behalf of the European Commission,ICF in collaboration with HIVA-KU Leuven, on 30/05 successfully organized and facilitated the 11th Social Situation Monitor. This seminar delved into the impact of #demographic changes on the #labourmarket, #poverty, and #intergenerational fairness. Key insights from the seminar highlighted that our current policy framework is inadequate to address the intertwined and fast-changing challenges of low fertility rates, an ageing workforce, and evolving family structures. However, we also learned that well-developed policies can effectively support tackling these challenges. The discussions underscored the critical need for ongoing research into these issues to identify effective policy solutions. The Social Situation Monitor plays a pivotal role in bridging academic research and policymaking, fostering the development of informed and effective labour market and social policies for a resilient and prosperous future. Data has the power to save lives! At today’s event "Strengthening NCD Monitoring Systems in the #EU: A Collaborative Approach" The European Union-funded projects #JACARDI and #JAPreventNCD , along with WHO/Europe, discuss policies that effectively tackle noncommunicable diseases (#NCDs) – from #cancer to #diabetes. Good to see the French Competition Authority publishing its first informal opinion on an agreement to promote sustainable development. This is pursuant to its open door policy and follows similar opinions by the UK and Dutch competition authorities in the last year or so. This one concerns agreements in the animals nutrition sector designed to harmonise and improve methods of calculating the environmental footprint of products. A few points of interest: 1. It was seen as a standardisation agreement in the sense of the European Commission’s guidelines on sustainability cooperation agreements. 2. It was accepted that the authority had never looked at this issue before (had that not been the case the parties would have been expected to “self assess”). 3. The “necessity” criterion was met (it was necessary for the environmental footprint to be based on sound scientific facts and methodology). 4. The parties were free to be even more precise in their calculations - ie to go beyond the terms of the agreement. 5. Underlying the whole opinion is a recognition that the environmental impact of a product can be an important parameter of competition (consistent with cases like AdBlue where the Commission fined German car manufacturers for restricting competition on the environmental qualities of their cars). The environmental impact of animals seems to be very much in the news this week following reports of the Danish “fart tax”-around E100 per cow apparently. Sounds funny but methane emissions are a serious problem. Excellent news 📣 A new €20 million programme, led by EIT Digital and funded by the European Commission, aims to address a gap in digital solutions in Europe's healthcare sector. We're one of nine partners across seven EU countries, and two Horizon Europe-associated nations, supporting the UNITE project💡 The new programme will activate open calls for proposals to cascade funding to highly innovative European companies in the digital health sector. These calls will support startups, scale-ups, and SMEs in delivering deep tech solutions that can bridge regional innovation gaps and enhance Europe’s global competitiveness 🤝 "The healthcare challenges Europe faces today require a unified, innovative response. The Dutch Ministry of Defense is creating a 100 million euro investment fund, the SecFund, to provide financing to Dutch startups, scale-ups, and innovative SMEs that meet Defense’s innovation needs. The fund will invest up to a maximum of 5 million euros per company. Thus, the Ministry of Defense, the provinces, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, regional development companies, and industry are joining forces to promote national security, innovative strength, and economic growth. According to research by the European Union, innovative companies in the defense sector more often experience a barrier in obtaining financing. Raising venture capital poses a major challenge not only because these companies’ capital needs are very high but also because financiers are reluctant to invest in the defense industry. The SecFund should bridge this gap.
