When you organize an event and call it the 'LinkedIn Summer Soirée - AI in Action' 🌞 you hope for nice weather. But as Janinke Ebbendorf so elegantly put it. We don't do 'nice' in The Netherlands. The prognoses for Generative AI's impact on the marketing industry were both exciting and a bit overwhelming. Did you know that 70% of your job will change over the coming decade, compared to 25% the past decades? This emphasizes how important it is to stay curious and being a lifelong learner. We dove deep into how marketers can leverage AI across the funnel on LinkedIn, and the new AI platform updates and integrations in their campaign manager. CM-Over —> CM-On 👊🏼 That was the takeaway from my Web Summit panel on “CM-Over? The Changing World of the Marketing Boss” with Gabie Boko, CMO NetApp, moderated by Luciana Rodrigues from Forbes . We soon unpicked the premise, agreeing that strong CMOs are more valuable than ever, with their unique ability to balance creativity, growth, tech and customer insight across their orgs. But with the average CMO tenure dropping, what does this shift say about the future of marketing leadership in 2025? A few thoughts based on our conversation: The CMO role is evolving, and in some cases receding. Companies like IKEA and Best Buy have scrapped the CMO position for titles like Chief Growth Officer others have called for the CMO to be replaced with Chief Entertainment Officer, prioritizing entertainment-driven audience engagement over “traditional” marketing. But here’s the catch: they may be overlooking just how essential it is to have a truly multi-dimensional C-Suite growth role, navigating the positive tension between short term growth and longer term brand health and differentiation. For sure, a minority of brands with a highly differentiated product and a CEO with strong brand instincts can prosper without the role, but for the majority, an empowered CMO is essential for building an iconic brand that drives competitive advantage. Rather than arguing about whether to abolish the position, we need to invest more time in defining the reality of the role in 2025 and empowering CMOs to perform at their best. There's still time before BFCM starts. → Starting with Klaviyo - even though it's a simple interface - is overwhelming to some. We covered the basics for setting up your account. Make sure you have essential flows ready: welcome, browse abandonment, cart abandonment, and a popup to capture site visitors. → Preparing for BFCM is key - If you haven't started, now is the time. Some tips: * Treat your VIPS / loyal customers differently (early access) * Increase sends during BFCM - You probably could double the emails - but be smart about it - guard deliverability. Tip ask people beforehand if they'd like to be excluded during this season. * For those bargain hunters - make sure you nail the post-purchase sequences - let them know why they should stay around. → Integrations are essential! Klaviyo research shows companies that use more than 3 integrations see better results from their marketing efforts. Put on your tin foil hats and ask yourself: What does this chart tell you? 'Cos it tells me that the market sees future growth as coming from innovation (principally AI) - but that it's also looking for a safe haven insulated from the disruption that innovation (principally AI) will bring. It starts to make sense of this pervasive appetite for short-term, risk averse, 'high efficiency / low effectiveness' marketing right now. You can't blame marketing clients though - that's the broader business psychology infecting everything outside of the M7 - 'hunker down, squeeze the lemons, acquiesce 'til the robots to come along and bring about fantastical growth'. With the M7, "The Money" has found a place that seems to offer all the upside of innovation and disruption (potential for huge growth) and few of the risks that come with it (uncertainty, risk, failure). This chart is telling me that the real danger of AI isn't that in the future its going to steal your job, it's that here in the present it is becoming a black hole for all the money chasing growth. I think it's all a bit misguided. If AI (by which we seem to mostly mean very sophisticated LLM) is really going to be as disruptive as the hype suggests then it will filter through everything in the economy - applications will be in places we haven't imagined. Don't worry it's not gonna be the C-suite wet dream of a 'fully automated luxury dystopia' that the doomers claim, but I'm fairly certain that in everything AI touches it is going to increase the delta between the best and the rest. Right now businesses should be trying to adapt to that coming reality - average won't be worth it, below average will be totally pointless, instead they are doing the opposite: "how do we maintain mediocrity but do it really, really, cheap". Thats a bad strategy for a few reasons: 1. Efficiency and optimization is the one single area where AI will eat almost anything a human can do for breakfast - you're building competitive advantage in an area where everything you do is about to be eclipsed - not smart. 2. You're fomenting a culture of myopic incrementalism that will leave you exposed as AI lands - AI will handle the increments, the scaling, what you need to create right now is a culture of ideas and innovation that embraces opportunity. 3. While everyone else is hunkering down the playing field is open, aim for awesome and your share of voice is gonna work harder because everyone else is chasing average. This goes beyond marketing - while everyone else is starry eyed about AI there's a massive innovation opportunity opening up for those who jump in. Again - I don't blame marketers here - but i do think together with your agency pals we can be tag team champions for growth, innovation, and effectiveness against the current timid furtive mood that exists beyond the 7 biggest stocks.

WANT BETTER BRAND RECALL FOR YOUR ADS? Like, what does it take to get people to remember that your ad was for YOU? DVJ Insights did a lovely study to explore this issue in the Netherlands. (Go Oranje!) They asked 1,200 people to watch a pod of 8 TV ads, answer some “distraction” questions, and then try to remember what brands were advertised. The 8 ads were pulled randomly from a pool of 48 ads for 48 different brands. The team also counted how many times the brand was mentioned verbally or shown visually in each ad. Visual mentions ranged from 0 to 7 times per ad; verbal mentions ranged from 0 to 6. And visual/verbal combo mentions ranged from 0 to 3. After getting a lot of “I don’t remember” and “uh, I think it was for Lindt…”, they did some math to find out how much brand recall would change given different numbers and types of mentions. (Go math!) Increasing the number of mentions increased the chance of recall for all types of mentions, from a 17% boost to a 56% boost. Verbal-visual combo mentions had the biggest impact on brand recall even at one mention (+31%). Verbal-visual combos also had the biggest improvement with the fewest number of mentions — with just 3 mentions, brand recall jumped 56%. Caveats? Of course! How good are we (marketers) at predicting how well our ads will perform? Turns out we're about as accurate as a coin toss. 🫠 Many important creative decisions are still made intuitvely. So this result isn't encouraging. This came from a Ehrenberg-Bass Institute study in 2016 titled "Marketers Intuitions About the Sales Effectiveness of Advertisements" by Nicole Hartnett, Byron Sharp, Rachel Kennedy, and Luke Greenacre. They had marketers watch pairs of TV ads and judged which was more sales effective. All participants had a 51% accuracy rate across predictions. Which means their ability to intuitively predict the effectiveness of TV ads was generally no better than random chance. If you're depending on your gut to pick winning creative, prepare to be wrong about half the time. You'd be better off leaning on marketing principles, rapid testing, and of course - using data from what actually works in market! So if I could teach a chimp to flip a coin, they'd be as good as professional marketers at evaluating ad effectiveness? We want to get 1% better every day 🚀 In the past few weeks I’ve been connecting with every department to see which workflows and tools we can optimize and automate to work more efficiently. Our goal: To make Audiencly even better, step by step. And the best part? The whole team is involved! Everyone can contribute their ideas. No matter how trivial an idea sounds - we try it. What works, stays. What doesn’t, gets scrapped. Here are a few new tools we’ve started using that are already having an impact on our business: 1) An AI meeting recorder that summarizes important information from calls. 2) A new dashboard that makes KPIs visible to our clients. 3) An automated and documented pre-sales process for new clients. These are just a few things that make our work a lot easier. And the leverage effect of these optimizations is huge. If one small idea affects our team of 45 people and saves each person an hour a week, we gain 45 hours a week. And to be honest, I just love constantly challenging and improving ourselves. 📈 This is the mindset we apply to the campaigns we run for our clients everyday - and now we are applying it to ourselves.
