That feeling when it all comes together... Lately, I have been enjoying reading physical books again. It helped that the book was very well written (thank you karin de galan school voor training) and that the content acknowledged everything I apply intuitively. Always nice to find out that there is scientific proof behind what you do 😉 (For those interested, it's a book in Dutch: GOED voor de GROEP) Since then I am drawn to so many books, and with that unfortunately also came back the stress of not having the time to read. So I decided to try out the smartreading method to read a book in one hour and today I am a happy reader 📚 But what I love the most about the smartreading method is that it is in line with how I proceed at work when creating a course or workshop. So often, I see that the goal people set is not well defined and thus the road to success is long and hard. But with a smart goal it becomes so obvious what needs to be done. Then it's just a question of choosing the right framework and fill it with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to perform the steps towards the goal. And here is the secret: Smartreading follows the same process 🤩 🎯You VISUALISE your goal. What do you want to be able to do after reading the book, make it a smart goal ~ First thing to do when creating a course or workshop is to determine the learning goal. ⏩Then COLLECT the general ideas with turboreading speed and create a mindmap to structure them ~ Second step is to create your course plan outline by determining which topics and activities you can use. Only the building blocks, no content yet. 🦘You EXPAND your mindmap by jump reading to only those parts in the book that holds the info needed to achieve your goal ~ Third step is to expand your plan and look up the content you'll need for just those activities that will allow them to reach the learning goal you have set. Scrap the rest, no need creating material for that. 🧠You REINFORCE the info in your memory by regularly revisiting the mindmap ~ When it's time to present your course, go back to the plan you created and revisit the information you put in there to rock and roll 👩‍🎓 I'd like to thank Paul van der Velde and Peter Plusquin for writing their book. I gave a very simplified picture of their method here, that doesn't do it justice. My only purpose was to show you my insight on the link with course creation. If you'd like to know the full secret to reading a book in one hour, please read their book, I can highly recommend it. I am convinced it will save me countless hours when I am looking to up my knowledge and skills for the topics I teach. Isn’t it great how everything comes together? Brilliant article (and graph) bij Max Roser: the founder of one of my favorite places on the entire internet (Our World in Data). Everyone understands that some organizations and charities are more effective than others, but people underestimate just how large the differences are. People *think* that the best charities are about 1.5 times as effective as the average charity. But according to experts in, for example, the domain of global health the difference is a 100-fold! To put it bluntly: a good charity can save 2 lives with a million dollars. An extraordinary charity could save 200 lives with a million dollars. And this is not just true for global health. As Roser writes: 'Whether it is about social policy, educational interventions, or measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions — dataset after dataset, we see very large differences across the various available options." The good news is that we have rigorous charity evaluators (like GiveWell for example) that help us find the best charities in the world. Roser: "This field saw a revolution in recent years, and I think it has been one of the most important trends in global development research. Before this revolution, there was a fierce debate about aid effectiveness, with some people strongly opposing it and others strongly supporting it. In the last decade, this heated debate has made space for a more clear-eyed approach that acknowledges that many charities are not effective at all while others are extraordinarily effective." GiveWell has found four charities (such as The Against Malaria Foundation) that can save a child’s life for about $5,000 in donations. I think this simple fact has enormous personal and ethical implications for most of us who live in rich countries. Remember: with a median wage in a country like The Netherlands (where I'm from) you're already part of the richest 3.5% in the world (find out where you are in the global income distribution here: https://lnkd.in/d24jz-VD). In the words of Max Roser: 'You have a great opportunity right in front of you. Many people in high-income countries have the chance to give away $5,000. Perhaps not in one moment, but it is possible for many over a longer period. Saving a child’s life is certainly something that everybody can be extremely proud of. Guided by research on differences in cost-effectiveness, many people can do this.' In #Indonesia (Java) and in the Caribbean island of #Bonaire they have started to restore the mangroves for #climateresilience In Indonesia, they grow their economy by making vegan kroepoek out of the mangrove leaves instead of shrimps. They also combined it with ecological fish farming on land and small fisheries in restored sea with enough shelter and breeding spaces for fish. Natural solutions... Nature-inspired economic design. In Bonaire, they designed a system of healthy goats fed on mangroves. Goats ice-cream, yoghurt and milk. Much better digestible for humans than cow milk. On April 1st, 2024, I embarked on a new adventure in my life. Together with my partner and dog, we left everything behind in the Netherlands and set out in a camper across Europe. In this blog I share a glimpse into the parallel journeys of personal transformation and organizational evolution of Disrupt Development. As a storm rages outside our camper docked in an Italian harbor, I'm reading a book of philosopher Ervin Laszlo who proposes that the purpose of life and the universe itself is development and evolution. I think about the constant motion and evolution that defines my life, this new adventure, and start to write down my thoughts. I see these elements of change and development reflected in Disrupt Development as well. The organization I founded is itself a manifestation of the desire for growth and evolution within the structures of our society. Like the storm that clears the sky for a new day, we aim to break through old paradigms and make room for new, more equitable and sustainable systems for all life on planet. Just as in my personal quest, Disrupt Development has reached a point of transition, and we are preparing for the next flourishing phase. We are on the verge of starting a new chapter with the establishment of a new global secretariat, with five permanent staff members, which will serve as the backbone of our efforts. A renewed governance structure will give us the flexibility to move in a world that is constantly changing. We are in the process of strengthening our financial diversity, which is essential for the sustainability of our purpose. Finally, we will soon begin to renew our community, where proactivity and co-creation will be fundamental for the flourishing of our movement. For Disrupt Development, and for me, the path of evolution will undoubtedly lead to new horizons and growth.

Today is Sinterklaas—a Dutch tradition. 🎅 It makes me think about how systems change. For years, certain aspects of Sinterklaas went unquestioned. Until someone stood up and said: "Hang on, this isn't right." ✋ At first, there was resistance. Aggression even. But change was already happening. Because people had started to think differently about what’s "normal." This reminds me of us challenging the tax-free shopping industry. Just because something is "the way it's always been done" doesn't make it right. - Why should only luxury shoppers get easy VAT refunds but at a high (hidden) cost? - Why should regular travelers lose hundreds of euros because the system is too complex? Or pay tax twice just because they don't know their rights? - Why should merchants be confronted with increasingly difficult conditions to help their customers? Tax should be a tool for fairness - not another way to increase inequality. At vatfree.com, we believe everyone deserves: → To know their rights → Easy access to what they're entitled to → Easy systems to facilitate this VAT refund (preferably automatically) → Not be overtaxed just because they can't navigate complex systems. The pushback we get tells me we're on the right path. Because real change always faces resistance. But like with Sinterklaas, once people start questioning the status quo, change becomes inevitable. A key question that many often forget.... Why do organisations really exist? This was one of the topics we discussed at the course organisation constellations at IVSW - Instituut voor Systemisch Werk last week. Of course, a mission or vision often describes its purpose. But there is also something that we call a leading principle that drives the founders to set-up the business. For example, a mission of a supermarket could be to make food accessible for everyone. Their leading principle could be wanting to do something good in the world. However, another supermarket could have the same described mission but the leading principle is making lots of money. Why is this important to understand? Because it helps to understand the nature of your business or the business you work for. Often when the mission and leading principle are not aligned the business and its people will experience less flow in the company. People will be confused about decision making for example; "I thought we were improving the world, why are we now choosing to expand our carbon footprint just so we can make more money?" When founders leave their company and a new leadership team is taking over, this often means including a new leading principle. That’s why some companies change entirely after a period of time. Although their mission appears to remain the same. How do you find out if the leading principle still connects with your business? If it fuels the organisation as it should?
