The Dutch Ministry of Defense is creating a 100 million euro investment fund, the SecFund, to provide financing to Dutch startups, scale-ups, and innovative SMEs that meet Defense’s innovation needs. The fund will invest up to a maximum of 5 million euros per company. Thus, the Ministry of Defense, the provinces, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, regional development companies, and industry are joining forces to promote national security, innovative strength, and economic growth. According to research by the European Union, innovative companies in the defense sector more often experience a barrier in obtaining financing. Raising venture capital poses a major challenge not only because these companies’ capital needs are very high but also because financiers are reluctant to invest in the defense industry. The SecFund should bridge this gap.

F-35 Takes Over Dutch Nuclear Task within NATO from F-16 The Royal Netherlands Air Force is making a significant step in transitioning from the F-16 to the F-35. Starting Saturday, June 1st, the advanced fighter jet will fully assume the Dutch nuclear task within NATO from the F-16. The Netherlands is one of the NATO allies providing Dual-Capable Aircraft for this NATO mission, and it is the first European country to transition to the F-35 for this purpose. The transition from the F-16 to the F-35 for NATO's nuclear task began years ago. Over the past few years, a comprehensive process of testing and certification of the F-35 for the nuclear task has taken place. The Royal Netherlands Air Force had already adopted the F-35 for conventional missions. Volkel Air Base, which previously hosted the F-16s, is now the home of the dual-capable F-35 fighter jets responsible for the nuclear mission. This involves one squadron of F-35s. With this transition, the Netherlands reaffirms its long-standing commitment to NATO's nuclear deterrence. NATO's nuclear deterrence is essential for the security of the alliance and, by extension, the safety of the Netherlands. With the ability to produce spare parts in real time, this initiative strengthens their supply chain and reduces costly downtime. This follows similar endorsements from defence leaders around the world, including the U.S. Navy, which has deployed the Markforged X7 Field Edition aboard submarines, and Australia’s Defense Industry, which is leveraging 3D printing to enhance localized manufacturing capabilities. From submarines to surface fleets, the message is clear: adapt or fall behind. Additive manufacturing is no longer the future—it’s the present. I must confess,… when I started at SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research my knowledge of earth science and research was at a basic level… With high levels of patience towards me, my colleagues Aaldert van Amerongen and Ilse Aben and their teams, tought me the relevance and importance of this earth research and observation, from space, we are doing on aerosols, methane leaks, CO2 and other gases affecting our climate. However, it’s not only the research and results based on the data from TROPOMI we can be proud of as an institute. It’s also of great importance to mention the whole consortium of insitutes and companies with whom the instrument such as #TROPOMI was designed and made. This cooperation and especially the results because of this, is what we, as the Netherlands, can be proud of. Thanks to this great overview by NOS Bobby Schinkel on how large methane-leaks are discovered by my colleagues, my understanding of this very important topic grew even more. Airbus Netherlands B.V. This strategic relocation marks a new chapter for Demcon and underscores the company's ambition of further consolidating its position in the maritime and unmanned technology sector. DEMCON unmanned systems (Demcon) develops and supplies advanced electric unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) equipped with unique autonomous navigation software for various maritime applications such as inspection, monitoring and maintenance in inland waterways, coastal regions and offshore environments. 🎤 Fedor Ester, Managing Director of DEMCON unmanned systems: “Our choice of Scheveningen's Third Harbor is no coincidence.
