An emergency alert regarding North Korea's propaganda leaflets caused anxiety and confusion among residents of Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces. The alert, which warned of unidentified objects presumed to be carrying North Korean propaganda, used the term "air raid" in English, leading to panic among recipients. The objects were later identified as balloons, with over 260 found in South Korea, some containing trash and animal manure. Critics questioned the necessity of the alert and criticized its ambiguous phrasing. Foreign residents expressed anger and shock, with some comparing it to a previous evacuation alert in response to a North Korean rocket launch. The official clarification stated that the term "air raid" was automatically generated by the national disaster management information system, chosen from a list of optional items to describe the objects. Questions also arose about the lack of precise information in the alert message, with citizens noting the heightened public fear unnecessarily. China supports Russia as BRICS chair — top Chinese diplomat According to Wang Yi, Beijing aims to turn BRICS into "the main channel for new forces to make their voices heard" BEIJING, September 11/ Chinese authorities support the activities of Russia as the BRICS chair, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a meeting with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu in St. Petersburg. "China supports the work of Russia as the BRICS chair," the Chinese Foreign Ministry quoted Wang Yi as saying. "We are ready to deepen mutual trust and cooperation among the member countries of the association through joint efforts," the top diplomat emphasized According to the foreign minister, Beijing aims to turn BRICS into "the main channel for new forces to make their voices heard." According to Wang Yi, the association should play an important role as a platform for the solidarity and cooperation of states in the Global South. The BRICS group has now gone through two waves of expansion since its inception in 2006. First, in 2011, South Africa joined founding members Brazil, Russia, India and China. Then, in August 2023, six new members, including Argentina, were invited to join BRICS after the intergovernmental group’s summit in Johannesburg. However, in December 2023, the new Argentinian government of President Javier Milei announced that it had declined the invitation for the time being because it considered integration with BRICS impractical. The five new members - Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates - began working as full-fledged BRICS member states since January 1. Russia assumed the rotating BRICS chairmanship on January 1, 2024. It will last until the end of the year and will include more than 250 events. "Carrying out counternarcotics cooperation is one of the important common understandings reached between President Xi [Jinping] and US President [Joe] Biden during their meeting in San Francisco in 2023. The counternarcotics authorities of China and the US have resumed regular communication since the San Francisco Summit. China's Hypocrisy: A Critique of Its Democratic Claims China's recent criticism of the United States' democratic system is a stark example of hypocrisy. While Beijing condemns the alleged "rule of the few" in the US, it oversees a one-party state where power is concentrated in the hands of a select group. The Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) authoritarian regime, characterized by limited political freedoms and state control over media and civil society, stands in stark contrast to the democratic principles it purports to criticize. Furthermore, China's own demographic challenges pose a significant threat to its long-term stability. A rapidly aging population and declining birth rates could undermine the country's economic growth and social cohesion. It is questionable whether the CCP's focus on external affairs, including criticizing other nations' democratic systems, is the most prudent use of its resources and attention or whether it is more classic posturing. Rather than engaging in unproductive rhetoric, China would be better served by addressing its domestic issues and working towards a more open and inclusive society that would promote measures to staunch some of the Demographic Bleed the 2030 will undeniably bring. A nation that aspires to global leadership should prioritize the well-being of its own people and respect the democratic rights of others.

PM Mishustin to chair first meeting of Russia’s new cabinet The meeting’s agenda includes a lot of financial issues MOSCOW, May 15/ Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin will chair the first meeting of the country’s new government. Late on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed new ministers and deputy prime ministers and held a meeting with the new cabinet at the Kremlin. The cabinet was for the first time formed under a procedure established by the 2020 constitutional amendment. Before being appointed, all candidates were approved by parliament. Meeting’s agenda The meeting’s agenda includes a lot of financial issues. In particular, the government will discuss allocating funds to certain regions for housing resettlement and the restoration of buildings affected by spring floods. In addition, the cabinet will also consider an initiative aimed at improving regulations in the field of fire security, environment protection and nature management. Cabinet makeup The cabinet is made up of the prime minister, ten deputy prime ministers and 21 ministers. The government has been upgraded by about 13% in terms of reshuffles. In particular, former Kaliningrad Region Governor Anton Alikhanov is now minister of industry and trade, former Khabarovsk Region Governor Mikahil Degtyarev has been appointed as minister of sport, former Kursk Region Governor Roman Starovoit is now transport minister, and former Kemerovo Region Governor Sergey Tsivilyov now heads the Energy Ministry. Oksana Lut, who used to serve as deputy minister of agriculture, has been promoted to minister.
