The TU Delft Library offers comprehensive training and support for researchers. 👥 Assistant Professors Claudieu Forgaci and Clémentine Conttineau (from the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft‌) recently collaborated with the Library to develop the #Geospatial #DataCarpentry for Urbanism (GDCU) workshop. This joint effort, supported by the Library and various contributors, emphasizes collective action and open science practices. ✍🏻 Aligned with the Rbanism community, the workshop promotes open-source software and provides a supportive learning environment. Participants progress from learners to helpers and instructors, showcasing the workshop's effectiveness. 💡The development process involved adapting existing resources with support from the Library and other stakeholders. Predicting emergency evacuation in dwellings using Machine Learning: my recent work is available online on Delft University of Technology's DigiPedia page! https://lnkd.in/epHXjGwH The work begins by constructing a labelling algorithm for floor plan images. The algorithm aims to assign a label to each image, which represents the plan's efficiency under evacuation. In doing so, stochastic methods are used to predict pre-evacuation time, specifically: Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations. Evacuation time is calculated deterministically by considering the graph representation of the floor plan. The betweenness centrality metric of the kitchen is also used as an indicator of risk, since more than half of dwelling fires originate in the kitchen. The above is used to assign labels to floor plan images and train a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to hopefully identify spatial features that contribute to effective evacuation. This work was challenging as the field of occupant behaviour under a fire emergency lacks in available research. However, it was because of this challenge that I learnt lots on finding and cleaning relevant data and making reasonable assumptions on hard-to-predict evacuation scenarios.

Last week I presented our research on measurements of sound transmission at #ICSV30 in Amsterdam. Key takeaways: 🔊Measurements of sound transmission using deconvolution techniques are very robust. 🧏‍♂️If you can barely hear the excitation signal at the receiving position: use response averaging to obtain a qualitative (room) impulse response in a few minutes time. 👻Use an MLS signal at low sound level to be able to measure in occupied rooms, without disrupting the work processes. 🧾find the examples of measurement settings in our paper. Delighted to have been nominated for the Flemish Future Proef Award at KU Leuven, Faculty of Architecture along with my former classmate Mita Sari under the research supervision of Jan Wurm, a leading expert in R&D application for the field of sustainable building systems and materials. Wat als bio-receptiviteit zou kunnen worden gebruikt om snel een klimaatvriendelijke aanpak te implementeren om de CO2-uitstoot te verminderen, terwijl niet-vasculaire planten worden gebruikt als filtersysteem voor de stad? Dit onderzoek had tot doel de opstap te zijn voor de manier waarop strijdende benaderingen tegen klimaatverandering kunnen worden geïntegreerd in de modernste bouwprocessen. Ik heb genoten van praktijkervaring met industriële 3DCP-spelers, universitaire spin-offs en materiaalonderzoek. EN: 3D printing construction is a rising trend in architecture, but concrete is a large polluter. What if bio-receptivity could be used to rapidly implement a climate-friendly approach to reduce carbon emissions whilst utilizing non-vascular plants as a filtration system for the city? This thesis aimed to be the stepping stone on how to incorporate climate-change combative approaches with state-of-the-art construction processes. I enjoyed hands-on experience with 3DCP industrial players, university spin-offs and material research.

𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 Over the past two decades, urban commons such as energy cooperatives, community gardens, and collective housing have emerged as sustainable alternatives to market-driven or state-led models. However, creating and managing these commons is complex, involving diverse stakeholders and professionals to align values, governance, and regulatory frameworks — a process we term 𝗯𝗲-𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴. In our research project 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀 we explored tools that commons professionals and communities could use in this process. We took a situated design approach while working in collaboration with the House of Hope housing cooperative and observed that traditional decision-making tools often fall short in handling complex issues and diverse perspectives. The communities and commons professionals we interviewed also expressed a need for more effective methods to streamline deliberation and foster collective well-being. ❓ How does urban transformation impact people’s visual experience of architectural spaces? In this new #openaccess 🔓 article by Gideon Spanjar, Frank Suurenbroek, Sába Schramkó, and Regien Stolp, the visual experience of users at the post-industrial NDSM wharf in Amsterdam is explored using eye-tracking technology. The study aims to understand how urban densification influences eye-level experiences for different user groups, including residents, visitors, and passers-by. In a laboratory setting, images of the NDSM wharf were shown to university students, and their eye movements were tracked and analyzed. Surveys on self-reported appreciation and restorativeness were also conducted, alongside on-site surveys with real users. The results highlight distinct eye-movement patterns influenced by environmental roles and tasks, revealing how architectural qualities shape people’s visual experiences, emotional responses, and sense of restoration. The buzz is still going strong about TU Delft | Library's transformation of its iconic book wall into an interactive experience designed to inspire exploration and discovery. Our team had the privilege of creating a 5-minute film that showcases this innovative project, which premiered at the #CIDOC2024 conference at the Rijksmuseum. Traditionally, knowledge has been stored in physical books, but TU Library is now bridging the gap between the physical and digital worlds to create a more engaging and dynamic experience for all. Here are some of the most exciting aspects of the project, as we see it: 📚 By adding multimedia elements to the book wall, TU Library is turning it into a "Collection Wall," where visitors can interact with the library’s resources in new and exciting ways. Conducting a meta-analysis of light dosimetry field studies can be challenging due to large differences in study protocols and data reporting. Based on the lessons learned from attempting such a meta-analysis, we have formulated recommendations for data collection and reporting in light-dosimetry field studies, to facilitate future meta-analyses.
