✨ VERY SMALL PARTICLES ✨ That's what the three co-founders of VSPARTICLE – Aaike van Vugt, Tobias Pfeiffer, and Tobias Coppejans – have dedicated their last 10 years to. Interesting post about the difference between the big upstarts in the US versus the EU. I think regulation is indeed one of the killers. I have been setting up some new startups in the Netherlands recently. Even before we set up an entity, I got nausea from the way the tax system works. Trying to tax 'value growth' of an early stage startup, making it practically impossible to transfer shares without paying taxes is not a great incentive. H2Fly is doing very interesting work. Small planes and helicopters will before long get serious competition from electrical aircraft. They have the potential to be much safer and quieter and will over time be significantly cheaper. Their key constraint is range, which limits their use cases to regular short flights for example between an airport and the adjacent downtown area. That said, there is likely to be a market for them, which over time will expand, especially as batteries become more energy dense. For bigger planes and longer ranges it will make sense to go the hybrid route. While batteries have much lower energy density per kg than kerosine the reverse is true for hydrogen. So the combination of batteries and hydrogen for bigger electrical airplanes makes a lot of sense. Extract maximum power from the batteries for take off and landing and fly long distances with electricity coming from hydrogen. H2Fly is emerging as a leader and so is its parent company Joby. It is all a very long term game, the barriers to entry are extremely high, the technology needs to mature but it has considerable potential. Go H2Fly!

So far renewable energy has only increased consumption of energy and electricity. Trillions are needed if your goal is net zero. Nations get to choose their own path for energy and electricity. Vaclav Smil estimates the cost to reach net zero is $440 trillion, paid for by affluent nations spending 20% to 25% of their GDP for the next 25 years.
