One of the top things that make entrepreneurship hard is when you lack a community of people who are all in the same boat. So, after years of working from cafe's, flex- and home office, Buster Franken and I deemed it the right time to take matter into our own hands and create a community of startup founders in Utrecht. Instead of an anonymous flex office or a co-working space, we want it to be a tight-knit group of people working seriously on their (impact) startups. Aside from work, there's also the important things that bring us together like shared lunches, drinks, community events and work-out sessions. The Netherlands Consulate brought female founders to LA last week to share awesome elevator pitches as consumer product, media and social network entrepreneurs. We also shared insights on LA's business environment; and some of our favorite secret spots with them.   Many major differences in the business landscape here compared to European countries like the NL (or my native UK) reflect the sheer scale and financial firepower of LA, California and the US. The 2024 EU population is ~450m across 27 countries, vs. ~333m in the US alone. The valuation of Nvidia is about the same as that of the UK's entire FTSE 100. And the median salary in LA is ~$72k vs. ~$59k in London. This means in LA: 🚀 It can be expensive for EU companies to launch. 💸 Business valuations are significantly higher (7x European early stage) in the US, and in California vs. the US, so you can raise higher funding rounds. 💄  Consumer companies often charge more for products. 🎯 Antonia Tritthart helps LA businesses stay relevant by knowing their customers in target niches - this is made possible by the large consumer pool here. 🤗 Professionals in LA are pretty open to newcomers and mutual collaboration vs. Europe; I find it 10x easier to build community here than London.  😇 There are many funds, angel investors, communities and grants focused on underrepresented founders and investors (including women) in California. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 - 𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐨 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 🌿 The last 1.5 year have been a true discovery into the unknown, letting go of all types of comfort zones that gave me the illusion of safety; a relationship that was not aligned anymore, but still stayed, a way of life that was not purely authentic to me, but still choose living that path as long as I could, taking on work gigs that were paying good enough, but was not in line with what I envisioned if I would have followed my boldest dreams. Due to a number of “coincidences” (as we call them, but they never are) all of these so called comforting structures lost its ground and the figurative rug was pulled away under my feet. I had suddenly nowhere to go, nothing to do and nothing to find. And that was exactly what was needed in order to propel me forward to where I was meant to be (for now that is). After spending a month on the land of one of my best friends Carlijn Nelissen from ON.PURPOSE STUDIO in Portugal, I was disconnected from wifi, 4g, and all “normal” comforts. I became grounded again in… well… me! The almost forced connection to nature and the forced disconnection from ‘the grid’ was a completely transformative experience, and only later realized what the impact was it had on me. Thanks to her, my path has led me to move to Portugal. Where the lands felt free, undiscovered, raw, rough, connected and to nature in ways that I missed all my life, but never realized until it happened. Now, fast forwarded into the now; I'm so grateful for the freedom seekers that have paved the way like Carlijn Nelissen, showing that an entrepreneurial life is possible executed from a completely different perspective. In alignment with nature and taking life much more slowly than we’re programmed to from a young age. Since living here off grid now for 1.5 year on my land, I have met so many people with similar stories. Almost all people I have met here have “fled” the rat race, to live a more pure and free life, with a lower cost of living, however, still very much have the desire to be of value to society in a much more organic and natural way. So this is a little Monday morning motivation, for all the freedom seekers. There are other ways to go about it, discover what it is that you seek. What is it that you're chasing and what really means success to you? To me the greatest measurement of success is: free time. We only have a limited amount of it and can't be regained once it’s spent. For those who missed the podcast I recorded with Carlien Cavens from Unplug48, see below. How to structure your venture studio SaaS portfolio company right from the start Venture studios are keen on creating SaaS portfolio companies. If structured right, SaaS companies can become profitable cash machines for venture studios. Combining fifteen years of experience with SaaS business models and researching venture builders for a PhD project, these are my five major learnings: 🔗As most SaaS products may be copied. Excellent distribution and long-term customer relationships are crucial. Long-term and strong relationships impact many important KPI's including ARR growth, Churn, NPS and eNPS. ➡️For venture studios, that means building on the existing network to creating legitimacy for the portfolio start-up. ---- 🚥A streamlined organization where everyone knows what to do makes recruiting during scaling much easier. Hiring too fast, before the need of more team members occurs, may hinder efficiency. Create job descriptions, routines and procedures for the organization open enough not risking losing founder mode. ➡️For venture studios, that means knowing what competence to look for in different states. Use accumulated knowledge timing and managing recruitment as best as possible. ---- 📈 Keep track on the blended CAC ratio. Inefficiency and high cost in acquiring new ARR will eat up your EBITDA margins. Most B2C SaaS gets scalable through higher numbers of customers. In B2B SaaS, expansion, cross-selling, and price increases are fundamental for fast growth. ➡️For venture studios, that means share customer databases, cross-sell as much as possible, and develop a value-based pricing structure as soon as possible. ---- 🔁 Having routines and procedures in place capitalizing from a management quality system (we used ISO) helps bringing your start-up from a healthy creative chaos to an efficient scale-up. ➡️For venture studios, that means creating a management quality system and put it in place in each portfolio company will help increase speed of development and growth. ---- 💻 An understanding that an intuitive and ‘friendly’ user interface with few bugs in the product, allow support and customer success to be part of the sales organization focusing on the core product, rather than being a business unit trying to help customers handle an in-efficient product to avoid churn. ➡️For venture studios, that means accumulate knowledge in software development in relation to user friendliness and learn from previous start-up attempts to avoid churn. Are Dutch and European founders not ambitious enough? 🤔 I just read Techleap's latest report: "AI Scaling Challenges for Dutch Founders." (Okay, I got AI to read it and share the highlights with me. 😜) This quote caught my (& Claude's) eye: "𝘞𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭 𝘪𝘧 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 4% 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘶𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘈𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 10𝘔. 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯..." Almost every day, I see posts and jokes about European founders thinking too small. As someone who works with Euro-founders everyday, I have a different view. I see: - Massive visions - Global mindsets from day one - Founders ready to take on the world It's not the founders who lack ambition. They're just working within the realms of what's possible in Europe. That's why many of them get funded from and/or move to the US. 💰 The real lack of ambition? That's from investors and governments in Europe. 🇪🇺 I'm still working on an article, "The Case for European Optimism." And I think it will show that European founders are just as ambitious as their US counterparts. The real question we should be asking is: - How can we create an environment that allows founders to dream bigger and reach higher? 🚀 And yes, I know this quotes mentions deep ecosystem issues... --- ↳ What's your take? On April 1st, 2024, I embarked on a new adventure in my life. Together with my partner and dog, we left everything behind in the Netherlands and set out in a camper across Europe. In this blog I share a glimpse into the parallel journeys of personal transformation and organizational evolution of Disrupt Development. As a storm rages outside our camper docked in an Italian harbor, I'm reading a book of philosopher Ervin Laszlo who proposes that the purpose of life and the universe itself is development and evolution. I think about the constant motion and evolution that defines my life, this new adventure, and start to write down my thoughts. I see these elements of change and development reflected in Disrupt Development as well. The organization I founded is itself a manifestation of the desire for growth and evolution within the structures of our society. Like the storm that clears the sky for a new day, we aim to break through old paradigms and make room for new, more equitable and sustainable systems for all life on planet. Just as in my personal quest, Disrupt Development has reached a point of transition, and we are preparing for the next flourishing phase. We are on the verge of starting a new chapter with the establishment of a new global secretariat, with five permanent staff members, which will serve as the backbone of our efforts. A renewed governance structure will give us the flexibility to move in a world that is constantly changing. We are in the process of strengthening our financial diversity, which is essential for the sustainability of our purpose. Finally, we will soon begin to renew our community, where proactivity and co-creation will be fundamental for the flourishing of our movement. For Disrupt Development, and for me, the path of evolution will undoubtedly lead to new horizons and growth.

For a long time I have been the only women in the room but the good news is that that is changing. More women in digital who have a leading role. I truly believe a company, a team or a group is more interesting and capable if there is diversity. Not only on gender but on every aspact that makes me me and you you.
