On April 1st, 2024, I embarked on a new adventure in my life. Together with my partner and dog, we left everything behind in the Netherlands and set out in a camper across Europe. In this blog I share a glimpse into the parallel journeys of personal transformation and organizational evolution of Disrupt Development. As a storm rages outside our camper docked in an Italian harbor, I'm reading a book of philosopher Ervin Laszlo who proposes that the purpose of life and the universe itself is development and evolution. I think about the constant motion and evolution that defines my life, this new adventure, and start to write down my thoughts. I see these elements of change and development reflected in Disrupt Development as well. The organization I founded is itself a manifestation of the desire for growth and evolution within the structures of our society. Like the storm that clears the sky for a new day, we aim to break through old paradigms and make room for new, more equitable and sustainable systems for all life on planet. Just as in my personal quest, Disrupt Development has reached a point of transition, and we are preparing for the next flourishing phase. We are on the verge of starting a new chapter with the establishment of a new global secretariat, with five permanent staff members, which will serve as the backbone of our efforts. A renewed governance structure will give us the flexibility to move in a world that is constantly changing. We are in the process of strengthening our financial diversity, which is essential for the sustainability of our purpose. Finally, we will soon begin to renew our community, where proactivity and co-creation will be fundamental for the flourishing of our movement. For Disrupt Development, and for me, the path of evolution will undoubtedly lead to new horizons and growth.

Hans Stegeman, Chief Economist at Triodos Bank is noticing a concerning shift in the climate finance conversation. Instead of focusing on radical divestment from fossil fuels and ambitious climate pledges, the discourse is increasingly dominated by two strategies: 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 and 𝒔𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏. And he posted this months before COP (link in comment). While these approaches can play a role, they often prioritise incremental change within existing systems rather than driving systemic transformation. 💪🏾 True climate action requires bold investments in regenerative solutions. 💥 At Rootical, we're committed to building #agroecological #businesses that are not just sustainable, but regenerative. 🌱 We're working to drive the transition to a more regenerative, healthy, decentralised and equitable food system by building agroecological businesses. 🎯 "Transition finance is different from financing a transition". Brilliant article (and graph) bij Max Roser: the founder of one of my favorite places on the entire internet (Our World in Data). Everyone understands that some organizations and charities are more effective than others, but people underestimate just how large the differences are. People *think* that the best charities are about 1.5 times as effective as the average charity. But according to experts in, for example, the domain of global health the difference is a 100-fold! To put it bluntly: a good charity can save 2 lives with a million dollars. An extraordinary charity could save 200 lives with a million dollars. And this is not just true for global health. As Roser writes: 'Whether it is about social policy, educational interventions, or measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions — dataset after dataset, we see very large differences across the various available options." The good news is that we have rigorous charity evaluators (like GiveWell for example) that help us find the best charities in the world. Roser: "This field saw a revolution in recent years, and I think it has been one of the most important trends in global development research. Before this revolution, there was a fierce debate about aid effectiveness, with some people strongly opposing it and others strongly supporting it. In the last decade, this heated debate has made space for a more clear-eyed approach that acknowledges that many charities are not effective at all while others are extraordinarily effective." GiveWell has found four charities (such as The Against Malaria Foundation) that can save a child’s life for about $5,000 in donations. I think this simple fact has enormous personal and ethical implications for most of us who live in rich countries. Remember: with a median wage in a country like The Netherlands (where I'm from) you're already part of the richest 3.5% in the world (find out where you are in the global income distribution here: https://lnkd.in/d24jz-VD). In the words of Max Roser: 'You have a great opportunity right in front of you. Many people in high-income countries have the chance to give away $5,000. Perhaps not in one moment, but it is possible for many over a longer period. Saving a child’s life is certainly something that everybody can be extremely proud of. Guided by research on differences in cost-effectiveness, many people can do this.' 📣We all need each other to make change happen 📣 Day two is underway! "People think radical change is difficult or will never happen. Take a look at history: radical change has happened. The question is not whether it will happen but how." Johan Schot, founder and academic director of the DT Lab & Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC). We're talking about full-scale territorial transformation with researchers, policy-makers and investors. Closing the morning session, Diana Velasco chaired a panel, speaking to Johan Schot, Richard Azarnia co-founder of The Good Investors and Tatiana Fernandez Head of Economic Strategy at the Generalitat de Catalunya. Diana opened the floor by asking what are the key points that can make transformation happen. "We need to find bridges between different stakeholders. We all need each other." Tatiana Fernandez "Academics won’t come up with all the answers. Transformation doesn't have a short term answer, it’s about developing new knowledge, solutions and ideas. It needs a platform and long term commitment, building trust and similar narratives between actors. We as academics should stand up and do the work we find important." Johan Schot "You need us and we need you. Investors need to learn that we can be initiators and this can lead to great results. You can generate better returns through system investing with a collaborative approach. However, as investors, we need to be wary of what we can do and what we can’t do." Why do so many neurodivergent adults thrive as freelancers and entrepreneurs, while they struggle in traditional work settings? 🧠 One of the first to research the relationship between entrepreneurship and neurodiversity - more specifically ADHD - is Ingrid Verheul, associate professor at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. Last week I had the pleasure of giving a keynote on neurodiversity alongside Ingrid at the Corporate Venturing & Entrepreneurship Summit in Rotterdam. Here is what I learned from Ingrid about the link between ADHD and entrepreneurship - and why we both believe in the value of ‘blended talent’: 💡 How someone with ADHD may struggle in a traditional work setting Why have endless meetings when one can just act? For many individuals with ADHD, the conventional structures and processes of traditional workplaces can seem stifling and counterproductive. With a brain that is interest- and novelty-driven, they may find it challenging to conform to the sort of rigid schedules, pointless politics, and bureaucratic rigmarole that dominate traditional workplaces. Some find a way to turn their unconventional thinking into a strength at work. But all too often, individuals with ADHD feel misunderstood in work settings that prioritize conformity and consistency over flexibility and risk-taking. 💡 Why entrepreneurship aligns well with common ADHD strengths While every individual with ADHD is different, their ‘shortcomings’ in traditional work settings can be their strengths in entrepreneurial roles. Novelty-seeking. Risk-taking. The ability to improvize. All of these can be powerful entrepreneurial skills, especially in the early stages of building a new business or venture. In her research, Ingrid and her peers have found a positive association between hyperactivity and entrepreneurial orientation - and more specifically, with its proactive and risk-taking aspects. 💡 Why it is important not to romanticize ADHD entrepreneurship The life of an ADHD entrepreneur is not all sunshine and roses. And success is not guaranteed. As Ingrid points out in her work, success in entrepreneurship for people with ADHD depends on the right circumstances - such as having a supportive partner or business partner, and a degree of symptom severity that allows for the strengths of ADHD to shine without being overshadowed by its challenges. Entrepreneurs with ADHD may also struggle as they become successful and more managerial qualities are needed to structure, scale, and sustain their business. That’s why building entrepreneurial teams with complementary qualities - or what Ingrid calls ‘blended talent’ - is so important. This week, Geert Wilders announced he’s struck a deal for his populist PVV party to enter a right-wing coalition with VVD, NSC and BBB. Backlash against green policies played a key role in destabilising the Dutch political system. Last year, the Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB) won provincial elections, riding a wave of farmer protests against new rules on nitrogen pollution. Many of the BBB’s voters switched to the PVV in the parliamentary elections, as that campaign became dominated by migration. The incoming government is on a collision course with Brussels. While it won’t scrap the country’s climate targets, it has pledged to end individually mandated change like the forced reduction of livestock and a boiler ban. It says its priority is to reduce reliance on “unreliable countries” by expanding domestic gas production, nuclear power - and more ambivalently, offshore wind. The new government is attempting to draw a clear dividing line with the left: energy security and cost first, decarbonisation second. Rishi Sunak made a similar gambit in Britain last year. These examples may signal a new left-right divide emerging on climate policy in Europe. Make or buy #impact? Yes, corporates can also invest in and help scale up existing impact enterprises. Good to see #Corporate #Impact #Venturing is a major theme here at ImpactEurope's #ImpactTransformers conference in The Hague. I was looking back into our publication on the theme from 2019 and found this overview of options and how they relate to objectives and challenges within the corporate still useful. In particular, specialized third party funds like Danone's Ecosystem Fund still seem like a great opportunity to get different corporates as well as other stakeholders behind one cause, both in terms of funding and understanding and tackling the challenge in a systemic way. The reasons behind the women gap in healthcare are deep and complex. They are also important, and recently a panel presented some evidence at the European Parliament. When one hears statements like the ones we extract from the panelists, Anca Griffiths, Alyson J. McGregor, Mirjam Kaijer, etc. we are not left behind untouched. Are you? ♾️ Men and women have different presentation of symptoms. ♾️ Men and women have different risk factors for these conditions. ♾️ Men and women respond different to medication. ♾️ Men and women have different outcomes. ♾️ Women are less likely to be diagnosed of heart disease. ♾️ Women are less likely to be treated with evidence-based-medicine. ♾️ Women are more likely to die before leaving the hospital. ♾️ It must be anxiety. It is in your head. ♾️ When women don’t fit the current healthcare paradigm, they are made to feel it is their fault. We feel the ball in our hands, -at least, partly. ⁉️ What could be driving this? Is it the resistance to change, the lack of female representation in top healthcare management, or perhaps the everyday burnout that leaves teams without the energy to advocate for change? Or is it all of these, combined with a system that rewards short-term efficiency over long-term transformation? At BeandGo, we believe that addressing these gaps requires empowering healthcare teams and leadership to create equitable systems. Whether it's through improving communication, aligning values, or addressing resistance to change, we work to help teams build resilience and foster systems that truly work for everyone—women included. Healthcare systems and policies need to be transformed, that is something most of us in healthcare agree with. We believe it starts with leadership and collaboration.
