Interesting article from Russell Reynolds Associates about the future of patient engagement in biopharma. I found a lot of valuable information in this article that dives into the the role of patient engagement in biopharma, describing how it has developed over the years and how it will develop in the coming years. As it says in the article; “Patient engagement is a relatively new function in the complex organizational mosaic of pharmaceutical companies. After rapidly evolving in an erratic way through the impulses of internal and external forces, its profile and purpose is now stabilizing both from a structural and talent point of view, entering a more mature phase.” I believe that this is one of the main reasons why we are experiencing a lot of discussion about how to work with patient engagement in drug development. Some stakeholders criticise the current state of patient engagement work in pharma by saying not nearly enough work is being done, while others say we are doing more patient engagement activities than ever. Both statements can be equally true. Based on the input from the experts that was interviewed, the article presents the following requirements that will reshape the patient engagement function in the years to come: Proximity to the CEO Connectivity and ubiquitous presence in the organization  Structured platform for external engagement Access to key datasets From what I have learned when talking with multiple people in pharma working with patient engagement is that 2 elements will be crucial to unleash the true power of patient engagement in drug development. 1. Work holistically with patient engagement Patient engagement is something that should be done holistically within the organisation so you don’t risk being slowed down or stopped by a silo structure. Try to influence as many divisions and departments within the organisation as possible and implement your processes so they also can experience the upsides of patient engagement. 2. Start collecting ROI data on patient engagement. All of us working with patient engagement need to better at presenting the business rationale for doing patient engagement activities. The good news is that more and more studies are starting to show positive ROI data from clinical trials where patient engagement has been an integral part of the strategy from the begining. So identifying the ROI of patient engagement should be just another reason for a pharma company to do patient engagement. To wrap up, I believe that in order to truly succeed with patient engagement in the pharmaceutical industry, the next challenges will be to develop standard processes for patient engagement, ensuring these processes are integrated into as many divisions and departments within the organisation as possible and ensure to collect and present the ROI data on the patient engagement activities. How Much Time Should We Spend on Strategy? One of the most common questions we at WhiteSpace Consulting & Capability Building get asked during our Brand Fitness Gym workshops or by our clients is, "How much time should we spend on strategy?" Our response is that it depends on the situation—there's no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. To explore this further, I drew a parallel from my training for running marathons, which offers valuable insights. Preparing for a marathon involves four  key components: -   Strength  -   Nutrition  -   Stamina -  Rest In a business context, these can be translated into: -   Strength = Strategy -   Nutrition = Capability building -   Stamina = Execution  -  Rest = Reflection and insight gathering  Strength (Strategy):  This is about building core competencies, much like strengthening the muscles in your legs, calves, and upper body for a marathon.  Nutrition (Capability building):  Just as nutrition fuels your body, Capability of the team builds your business  Stamina (Execution):  Actually running on the road builds your stamina and endurance, similar to executing your business plans. Rest (Reflection and insight gathering)- An essential part of training. A balance is a must Now, how much time should be spent on each of these areas? Below is a typical breakdown of time spent during a 4-6 month marathon training period: -   Strength (Strategy):                23% of the time -   Stamina (Execution):           56% of the time -   Rest:                                            22% of the time Interestingly, in business, we often suffer from "Action Bias," where we feel that if we're not constantly doing something, we might become redundant. However, focusing solely on execution without enough strategic planning can lead to burnout or misguided efforts. STRENGTH TRAINING (STRATEGY) Let’s zoom in on strength-building (strategy). A typical strength session lasts anywhere from 45 to 75 minutes, but not all of that time is spent on actual strength training. A typical session has three parts: 1. Warmup 2. Exercises 3. Cool down The key takeaway here is the quality of time spent. Even though we might allocate 23% of our time to strength training, only about 60% of that time (14% of the total time) is spent on actual strengthening. In business, this means that it’s not just about how much time you spend on strategy, but how effectively you use that time.  Conclusion: What’s important is not just the time you spend on strategy but the quality and focus of that time. Just as in marathon training, where balanced preparation is key to success, in business, a thoughtful balance of strategy, execution, and rest is crucial to achieving your goals. Heart failure is a complex, progressive condition. For too long, patients have faced challenges accessing life-saving therapies like LVADs at the right time in their care journey—often leading to outcomes that don’t fully reflect the potential of modern treatments. That’s why this trial is so important. TEAM-HF aims to set a new standard in how we identify patients at high risk of developing end-stage heart failure. Using remote pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) monitoring, we’re working to take the guesswork out of decision-making to help providers identify those who could benefit from an LVAD earlier in the disease spectrum, potentially improving survival and quality of life. On strategy, it’s not enough to look at the market opportunities, choose, and build an action plan. Once you decide on a direction, to make strategy come to life in a meaningful way, you need to answer: - Do we have the operating mechanisms to support this strategy? - Do we have the right team (structure, expertise and skills needed)? - Will our processes enable us to make this happen? - What KPIs will tell us if we are on track? What individual and shared goals should teams have? Could any of the goals cause conflict with each other? What incentives do we need? - What experience will we be funneling prospective customers into? Are we enabling the right level of conversations? - Do we have the bandwidth to make this a priority? (If not, deprioritize something else.) - What risks still exist and how do we mitigate those? - Who will do what work, by when?
