Due to extreme heat, the route was shortened from 250 to 125 kilometers. Quite fitting, as the impact of climate change became very tangible throughout the day. The team started early with strong energy, enjoyed the ride and even made time for a coffee stop along the way. But as temperatures rose, the final kilometers became a real challenge. It was a powerful reminder of how heat affects both body and performance. All in all, a great day full of teamwork, perseverance and connection, combined with an important message, one that closely reflects TAUW’s ambition to contribute to a future proof living environment. A big congratulations to the team for taking on this challenge and representing TAUW with such dedication 💪 #ClimateClassic #ClimateAction #Sustainability #ClimateChange #TAUW #Teamwork #Cycling #Vitality TAUW Nederland

Back in the office after a 3-week mission across St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Suriname for the GEF ISLANDS Programme (Output 2.2). Representing TAUW, I worked alongside the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the Caribbean and local National Working Groups (NWGs) to map out hazardous waste lifecycles focusing on waste streams specific to the Caribbean Region. The goal is to co-design realistic, actionable National Implementation Roadmaps for each country, alongside designing a targeted demonstration pilot for waste segregation and collection in Suriname. During the first week, Saint Kitts and Nevis highlighted critical milestones, including the recent successful export of their waste oil stockpile and active preparations to bring a national medical waste autoclave online at the Conaree Landfill. Saint Lucia is finalizing an overarching National Integrated Chemicals and Waste Management Policy, providing a solid institutional framework for life-cycle management. A successful, 20-year public-private partnership is already active, effectively capturing bulk waste oil for commercial co-processing. Local private-sector operators, such as Greening the Caribbean, are proving the viability of commercial electronics dismantling and recycling loops. To scale these initiatives, our upcoming roadmap will focus on practical infrastructure improvements and ensuring environmental sound management for specialized waste streams according the international best practices. The Suriname context really brought practical, on-the-ground challenges to life. We met with the District Commissarissen of Marowijne and Commewijne, small mechanic shops, electronic stores, and local operators like Janki & Zonen N.V. and Green Circle Recycling NV to design a realistic segregation and collection pilot. Instead of just looking at high-level policy, we focused on real technical bottlenecks—like figuring out how to upgrade national infrastructure and navigating environmental permitting requirements. Special thanks to the ministries, National Working Groups, and private operators who shared their operational realities and to our local team, Nadezhda Stephens, Chiquita Margaret - Resomardono, and Guy Mathurin, for their excellent support throughout the mission. Time to translate this data into action. #WasteManagement #SIDS #CircularEconomy #Suriname #SaintLucia #SkittsAndNevis

I had the pleasure of attending the third edition of the Nuclear Innovation Conference 2026 in Haarlem — two inspiring days that clearly showed how much momentum nuclear energy has regained. With around 300 participants from across the globe, the conference created exactly the kind of open, collaborative environment we need today. It brought together governments, industry, and knowledge institutions — and most importantly, people — to connect and move forward. 🔍 A few key insights stood out to me: ⚡ Nuclear energy is no longer seen as optional, but as a strategic pillar in the future energy mix 📈 Electricity demand is rapidly increasing, driven by electrification and developments like AI 🔌 Our current energy systems are reaching their limits 👉 But perhaps the most important takeaway is this: the real bottleneck is no longer technology — it is execution. At TAUW, we see this every day. But delivering energy projects is not just about engineering and construction capacity. It also heavily depends on timely and robust environmental permitting, spatial planning, and impact assessments. These processes — including Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA/MER) — can significantly influence project timelines. 📢 That is why, alongside the well-known call for technical talent, I would also like to emphasise the growing need for environmental expertise. We will need many more spatial planners, permitting and EIA specialists, HSEQ professionals, and regulators to enable the scale-up ahead. Another important aspect is that key boundary conditions must be addressed early on. For instance, safe and long-term solutions for radioactive waste — such as the expansion of storage facilities like COVRA — must be secured as part of the overall permit. 💧In addition, I was struck by how little attention was given (at least in the sessions I attended) to emerging environmental constraints such as water availability and stricter regulations (e.g. the Kader Richtlijn Water). Water scarcity and rising temperatures will increasingly challenge cooling capacity, making nuclear energy — much like other sectors — dependent on environmental limits that are becoming tighter over time. This reinforces the need for an integrated approach to the energy transition: one that connects technology, environment, policy, and execution. Many thanks to NRG PALLAS for organising this valuable event, and to all speakers and participants for sharing insights and perspectives. Let’s continue building the connections needed to turn ambition into reality. https://nic2026.eu/ #NIC2026 #EnergyTransition #NuclearInnovation #Permitting #Sustainability #Collaboration #TAUW TAUW Nederland TAUW

Innovative app for identifying aquatic insects and organisms 💧🔬 Since February 2025, TAUW Foundation supports an inspiring project that brings together technology, ecology, and citizen science. The initiative focuses on developing an application that uses AI-powered image recognition to identify aquatic organisms and insects living underwater. This innovation is not only fun and educational for users, but also valuable for water management in the Netherlands. With just a simple photo, people can discover what kind of life exists in their local waters, and these species provide important insights into overall water quality. The collected observations can support water authorities in monitoring water quality, especially in smaller water bodies such as ditches, urban waters, and ponds that are often outside regular monitoring programs. In this way, technology directly contributes to a healthier and more sustainable living environment. 🌍💙 What makes this project particularly special is the strong collaboration between knowledge institutes, NGOs, and water authorities. 📻The project even received attention from the Dutch radio program Vroege Vogels - BNNVARA Listen to the (Dutch) radio fragment here: https://lnkd.in/epvpUrP6 Would you like to try it yourself?
