This is how the cookie crumbles… Last week Next Tech Food Factories hosted an event about automation and digitalization in the bakery sector. Great to see that so many people from various backgrounds were interested in this session. Lo Huls (LSS MBB) (operations director @ Bolletje) was very clear about the challenges they face but also very clear on how to handle those challenges. Lo sees automation and digitalization not only as a must but also embraces it as an opportunity to improve their products, process and as an employer. People were very curious about their pioneering project on introducing AI driven automation in then process. A few other interesting automation usecases where presented by Andries van der Werf (Van Wees Waalwijk) and Peter Boermans from ABB. But automation is not all about technology… it is also about legislation. Hans van der Steen explained the importance of hygienic design, machine safety and security. One of the interesting questions was; Everyone talks about the integration of mechanics and software and how to involve people… but what is actually going to change? My personal opinion is that interaction with machines and systems is going to change. Instead of experienced operators and employees managing the machines and settings of the process, the machine is going to tell the operator what it needs… why? Because the next generation of employees expects this and it is a fact that we are losing skilled and experienced people rapidly. What is your opinion on that??
