🌍 E-Waste 4 Space Fundraising Initiative 🌍 We're thrilled to introduce E-Waste 4 Space—a project designed to tackle one of Malaysia's most pressing environmental issues: the improper disposal of electronic waste. Posted on Kitafund, this fundraising campaign aims to raise RM2,500 to address this challenge by creating awareness, establishing collection points, and organizing impactful events. Our team, currently part of the FSTEP program hosted by Bank Negara Malaysia at AICB, is driven to make a tangible impact in Malaysia, and potentially, the world. Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we're particularly focused on: SDG 4: Quality Education SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities SDG 13: Climate Action 📌 Why E-Waste? Electronic waste, or e-waste, is often improperly discarded, posing significant environmental hazards. SUSTAINABILITY AWARENESS PROGRAMME BY CENTRE FOR ENTREPRENEUR DEVELOPMENT AND RESEARCH (CEDAR) SDN BHD. Introduction of SME Sustainability Sustainability is an important value-add for SMEs and is transitioning from a “nice to have” to a “must-have”. Consumers, investors and regulators are increasingly displaying a preference for sustainable business practices and are consciously assessing businesses based on environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria. SMEs are generally more vulnerable to impacts from environmental and social issues but are equally more responsive to business trends and can create a positive impact on sustainable development. However, most sustainability approaches are tailored to Corporates and are disparate to approaches for SMEs. SMEs have a need for practical guidance and pragmatic approaches that consider SME-specific challenges and opportunities. With this in mind, the UN Global Compact Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB) set out to study Malaysian SMEs’ approaches to sustainability and how important the sustainability movement is to them. 🌍 Climate Finance: A Path to Malaysia's Sustainable Future 🌿 Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof emphasizes the importance of climate finance in achieving Malaysia's sustainability goals. Speaking at the "Climate Finance Summit 2024," he highlighted the need for international partnerships to support the energy transition. While international partnerships are crucial, we must also look inward for funding. Potential sources include: Green Bonds & Sukuk: Mobilizing capital for sustainable projects. Public-Private Partnerships: Engaging businesses in green initiatives. Tax Incentives: Encouraging investments in renewable energy. Local Grants & Funds: Supporting innovation and small businesses. A good example would be Gagasan Solar (光大), a leading Malaysian Commercial & Industrial (C&I) solar energy developer and the first Securities Commission-Regulated Solar Developer & Investment Firm. On June 13th, 2024, I'm glad to joined with industry leaders convened for the "Director's Masterclass Series 2024: Leveraging Nature's Wealth for Business Sustainability” at Bursa Malaysia. Datin Seri Sunita Rajakumar, Chairperson of Climate Governance Malaysia, inaugurated the session by underscoring a pivotal shift in corporate ethos: transitioning from mere emission reduction to embracing nature-positive strategies. She emphasized the increasing significance of integrating biodiversity into corporate frameworks, noting how businesses are recognizing that preserving and enhancing biodiversity can foster long-term sustainability and resilience. Following her address, Aina Zahari, Director of Corporate Strategy at Bursa Malaysia, highlighted that 25% of over 1000 PLCs had enrolled in the PLC Transformation program. This milestone signifies a significant stride towards embedding sustainability into business operations, aligning their practices with sustainability objectives. Faizal Parish, Director of the Global Environment Centre, which featured discussions and examples illustrating the critical nexus between biodiversity, human wellbeing, and economic prosperity. He highlighted the substantial risks associated with biodiversity loss, including disruptions in supply chains, regulatory pressures, and damage to corporate reputations. The World Economic Forum's classification of biodiversity loss as a high-risk factor underscored the urgency for businesses to adopt biodiversity-focused practices which can lead to significant business risks, such as shortages in raw materials, increased costs, and compliance challenges. Key takeaways:- 1. Assessing the Biodiversity Footprint: Understanding how business activities impact biodiversity. This involves conducting biodiversity audits and impact assessments across operations and supply chains. 2. Setting Goals: Establishing clear objectives to reduce or offset biodiversity impacts. Companies should create measurable, time-bound targets aligned with broader sustainability goals, aiming for no net loss or net positive impact on biodiversity. 3. Integrating into Strategy: Embedding biodiversity considerations into the core business strategy. Ensuring biodiversity goals are integrated into overall strategic planning and decision-making processes. 4. Engaging Stakeholders: Collaborating with stakeholders in biodiversity efforts -includes employees, suppliers, customers, and local communities to garner support and drive collective action for biodiversity conservation. 5. Monitoring and Reporting: Regularly tracking biodiversity status and management activities. Transparent reporting using standardized metrics and frameworks helps build credibility and accountability in biodiversity 6. Extending Efforts to the Supply Chain: Promoting biodiversity management throughout the supply chain, by working with suppliers to adopt sustainable practices, set biodiversity criteria, and support them in meeting standards.

“Hujan Batu” vs. “Hujan Emas” Sharing my experience living and working overseas does not make me less of a Malay and remains definite Malaysian. I notice that in almost all my related posts the above terms were dropped in with very negative tone. I wonder what their intentions were. You are free to choose wherever you want to work and live and yet continue to contribute to Malaysia in one form or another. The Malaysians that I met abroad, they are more Malaysians than the local in many ways. You can’t say that the Kelantanese who left Kelantan are any less Kelantanese than those who stay. So do people from other states. They are just practicing the concept of “hijrah”, which is a good thing. Kennedy spoke his famous words, "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." I do agree with JFK, but to do so, you must take care of your and your family needs first. If migrating is the most feasible and sensible mean for you at the moment, then by all means. Once, you are capable, then you can help others including your country. You can hold on to your principle, but at the same time you must be practical and reasonable. Even worse, when your family has to suffer because of your silly principle.

The Joy Of Eating Street Food Reading about the travails of Mr Wong Kok Chin and his Ramly burgers, brought back memories of my trip to the Netherlands in May 2024. There, I finally got to try the famous Kapsalon of Rotterdam (see photo below). Kapsalon is basically grilled meat topped with melted cheese, salad and dressing. As to why it is called Kapsalon (which means "barber shop" in Dutch), here's the origin story - https://lnkd.in/gwHBt_WB There's just something about grilled meat doused in savoury sauce and topped with salad that makes it so delicious. Whether it's a Ramly burger or Kapsalon, this is genuine street food. Incidentally, I never knew until I visited the Netherlands in 2022 that satay is actually a popular dish there because of the Indonesian connection. Street food in Singapore is incredibly affordable, considering how high the general cost of living here has become. S$3.50 (US$2.60) for a burger ! But how do these hawkers make money when the rent is so high? No wonder Mr Wong lost so much money at his Rochor Road outlet. "The burgers are also known for patties wrapped in a sauce-filled omelette – hearty, sloppy pasar malam fare popular in Malaysia and Singapore. According to Wong, business was booming at this first outlet. “Sometimes customers needed to queue for almost an hour just to get the burger,” he exclaimed." "Unfortunately, when Bugis Street underwent major renovations in 2022, Wong had to cease operations at this outlet a mere six months after opening. But Wong, along with his two shareholders, expanded Mr. Burger to a more spacious, standalone air-conditioned eatery with 70 seats at 159 Rochor Road later that year. However, while it seemed like the standalone eatery was thriving, high rental costs caused Wong to once again shut its doors barely a year later. Wong’s never-say-die attitude secured him yet another location in under three months – this time a smaller coffee shop stall in Bgain Eating House at Waterloo Street. Unfortunately, this location had very little footfall, and caused him to “lose a lot of money”. He closed shop on Apr 15, 2024. According to Wong, the total amount of money that he lost cumulatively over these three outlets amounted to almost S$700,000. He shared: “I lost more than S$600,000 at Rochor Road and around S$80,000 at Waterloo, so total about S$700,000.”" "What’s great is that Wong's burgers now cost S$3.50 each, lower than the S$4.90 at his previous location, despite all the ingredients being the same as before. He explained that the customer flow at these MRT station locales is good, and they recover their costs by selling more burgers here. Upskilling or upselling? Sentosa's ambitious new framework to upskill 15,000 workers sounds like a dream come true for the local tourism sector, but is it just a glossy veneer over deeper issues? 🤔 Yes, focusing on wellness, sustainability, and AI is progressive, but let's cut through the corporate jargon and ask the hard questions: 1. **Implementation:** Will these training programs genuinely address the actual needs of the workers, or are we looking at another round of generic courses that check the boxes but deliver little value? 2. **Depth vs. Breadth:** Covering everything from customer experience to AI sounds impressive, but can we really expect workers to become experts in such a broad range of skills, or are we setting them up for superficial knowledge? 3. **Inclusivity:** Are all workers, especially those in lower-wage positions, going to have equal access to these opportunities, or will this initiative widen the gap between different tiers of the workforce? 4. **Long-term Impact:** How will we measure the success of this initiative? Is there a robust follow-up mechanism in place, or are we banking on short-term gains? 5. **Economic Sense:** With Sentosa already seeing a significant recovery in visitor numbers, is this massive investment in upskilling truly necessary, or are there more cost-effective ways to boost the tourism sector? It's time we look beyond the headlines and demand real answers. Are we truly empowering our workforce, or just playing a game of corporate buzzwords?
