In honor of World Refugee Day, we are proud to spotlight Western Union Global Fellowship Alumni Jacob Deng Bol Deng and Solomon Bhaghabhonerano – two extraordinary leaders creating innovative, community-driven solutions that expand opportunity and economic resilience for refugee and displaced communities around the world. The Western Union Global Fellowship, powered by Watson Institute, supports entrepreneurs and leaders from and serving highly marginalized, refugee, and forcibly displaced communities globally. Through the Western Union Global Fellowship, Jacob and Solomon gained access to the mentorship, skills, networks, and resources needed to continue scaling their ventures and deepening their impact. Jacob, a South Sudanese refugee and Founder of Education Needs All (ENA), is transforming education access for marginalized youth across East Africa and Costa Rica through digital learning, entrepreneurship mentorship, leadership development, and scholarship opportunities. To date, ENA has engaged more than 7,500 young people, mentored 5,500 in digital and leadership skills, and secured 250 scholarships to top universities worldwide. Solomon, a Congolese refugee and Founder of LIVE IN GREEN, is advancing clean energy, environmental restoration, and climate-resilient livelihoods for refugee and host communities across Uganda. Under his leadership, Live in Green has scaled biomass briquette production from 12 to 25 tons per month and developed the globally certified Moto Core Clean Cooking Stove to expand access to affordable, sustainable energy solutions. Reflecting on World Refugee Day, Solomon shared: “Refugees do not need others to define their future; they need the opportunity and support to build it themselves.” At Watson Institute, we are proud to partner with Western Union to equip and elevate leaders like Jacob and Solomon, whose work is expanding opportunity, strengthening communities, and creating lasting impact around the world.
