A glorious morning in #Dubai with #bitcoin just passing $100,000. This is a huge psychological barrier and it was almost exactly 6 years ago when btc passed $10,000. But 6 years is almost a lifetime in technology years and some of the business we are working with at SOLA Group in the Web3 space are doing some mind blowing stuff. Five investment theses about venture studios at the turn of 2025. The fifth. One of the most persistent misconceptions is to consider investments in venture studios equally as in venture funds. Such an analogy puts the studio's investors on par with FoF and institutionals.  Meanwhile, from an investment angle, each full-cycle studio is one integral and indivisible company with a recurring business, which model should be called not "open-ended" but "no-ended."  It is wrong to assume that the studio, like a VC, has a "portfolio." A studio regularly creates a new startup. From a certain point, the studio begins to sell startups repeatedly. At any given time, dozens of companies are in the "construction in progress" mode. That's why a much more accurate analogy for a studio is a construction company that builds several sites, constantly sells apartments and architectures new real estate objects. It's not a portfolio; it's a stream. In this sense, investing in studios is more like in the industrial sector. However, for a typical investor, the studio model is associated with the risks of the earliest stages. How do investors usually mitigate it?  First, by investing in a large number of startups in parallel. It is the same with studios - investing not in one studio but in numbers is rational. Second, by investing a relatively small amount of capital into each startup. That is how angels work. Do angels invest in studios? Yes, but much less than studios need. In the history of the startup economy, that was the reason why venture funds appeared. Having learned how to collect capital from many investors, funds became able to increase the amount of investment in a single startup radically. A similar process will occur concerning studios. The funds investing in studios will gather investors by creating a squared diversification.  In the numerator is a diversification of startups created by studios. In the denominator, there is a diversification between studios. A portfolio of 15 studios over a 5-7 year means 500+ startups.  Any studio bears personal risks. A portfolio of studios liquefies the dependence on each studio's success level. Funds investing in studios are just beginning to emerge. They are discovering proper types of investors and forming rational conditions. As it was more than half a century ago with the ascension of venture funds, today, the success of such new funds entirely depends on the knowledge of the fund's founders. It is natives from the depths of the studio business who bring their expertise to investors and experience to studios. Their knowledge will cement this novel investment partnership. 🔥 Google slashes Gemini 1.5 Flash prices, igniting LLM price war On August 12, 2024, Google will slash the prices of its Gemini 1.5 Flash model by 80%, making it significantly more affordable than OpenAI's GPT-4o mini. The new costs will be $0.075 per million input tokens and $0.3 per million output tokens, nearly cutting in half the prices offered by OpenAI's competing model. 7 years ago, we had the chance to invest in a little company called Blockdaemon as the first investor. At the time, crypto projects were on the rise, with many being applications built on top of Ethereum. Blockdaemon took a different approach and aimed to build a crypto infrastructure company. This is something we were particularly excited about and we felt Konstantin Richter was an unrivaled founder to take this head on. Blockdaemon is no longer the little company we invested in. Today, they work with some of the largest institutions in the world like Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, and JPM and are currently valued at over $3.25B. Here's the story in this unicorn video (P.S. Some more thoughts about MiCA in 2025. As you already know, MiCA is a EU regulation, meaning that it applies only to EU and EEA countries (not the whole of Europe). This means that Switzerland and the UK have a chance to attract some large crypto businesses and wealthy individuals by introducing more favorable regulations. Switzerland is already a crypto hub. The City of Lugano is well known for its progressive stance on digital asset regulations, with residents being able to settle municipal taxes and make everyday payments to a large number of merchants using Bitcoin and other digital assets. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has been taking a thoughtful and strategic approach to digital assets under the new Labour government, which took power in July 2024. They could introduce an extensive, regulatory framework already in early 2025. It will be interesting to follow.
