Empower Your SME: Unlock EU Intellectual Property Funding 🔓 The SME Fund, a European Commission initiative managed by the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), is back for another year, running until December 5, 2025. With broken hearts we announce the sudden passing of our dearest colleague, partner, boss and friend, Dr Tanya Sciberras Camilleri. We will remember her as a powerhouse – a credit to the profession, a mentor to many over the years, and an irreplaceable leader to our team.  VL will not be the same without her. She’s inconsolably missed.  Please keep her and her loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.

A landmark judgment delivered on 13th January 2025 reinforced apartment owners' rights over shared roof spaces. The case involved Tower Road apartment owners whose roof access was restricted after airspace development. Despite permits, the new structure made access difficult, breaching their rights. The Court confirmed that while airspace development rights exist, they must respect established servitudes. The penthouse owner was ordered to restore stair access and provide an equivalent roof area, upholding apartment owners' rights. A legal notice transposing the EU Directive 2022/2381 aimed at improving the gender balance among directors of listed companies, was published on 27th December 2024. It shall eventually come into force in Malta by the Minister on publication of another legal notice bringing it into force. The National Commission for the Promotion of Equality for Men and Women will be monitoring the situation by requesting information from the Malta Financial Services Authority on gender representation on the boards of listed companies and with measures taken with a view to increasing gender balance. ⚖️ The criteria for appointment to board positions will continue to be established by the companies with gender being excluded as a factor. The choice in favour of the underrepresented sex will only be made in the event that two candidates are equally qualified for appointment. 💼 The Directive has been in force since 27th December 2022 and should have been implemented in national legislation by 28th December 2024. Therefore, it is augured that the legal notice is brought into force as soon as possible, and that this will be only one of further measures to increase gender balance in other spheres of public life.

Anna Maria joined us as a student in 2011 and since then, she has consistently raised the bar. After graduating as a Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta in 2013, she earned her warrant to practise in the Courts of Malta in 2014 and was awarded a Diploma in Financial Services Operations and Compliance in 2015. A proud member of the Chamber of Advocates since 2016, Anna Maria was promoted to Senior Associate in 2017, a testament to her exceptional skill and dedication. Her career trajectory reflects her passion and commitment. From her early work vetting titles to immovable property, Anna Maria found her calling in licensed activities, specialising in corporate services. She has served and advised various MFSA-regulated entities, particularly in insurance and trustee and fiduciary services. In 2022, Anna Maria reached a major milestone, becoming an equity partner at Valletta Legal—continuing to play a pivotal role in shaping the firm’s future.
