Accounting for 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions, of which roughly 70% is generated from building operations, the remaining 30% comes from the construction, real estate sector is nowadays one of the most polluting industries. With such environmental burden, a significant change in the real estate sector to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions is not only urgent to sustain the industry but also to respond to the surging decarbonising demands from relevant industries. The special feature in the latest issue of Robb Report Vietnam raised an interesting question of whether decarbonising real estate will be just a momentary trend or set a future standard for the industry? [How Atinum Investment prepares to chase next big opportunities] When Atinum’s chief managing director, Kim Che-uk joined Atinum, Korea’s software ecosystem was still in its infancy, forcing him to focus on hardware investments despite his expertise in software. However, soon in the early 2010s, the emergence of services targeting internet and mobile users sparked a wave of innovation. "We are now witnessing a wave far greater than mobile. AI is reshaping everything on a fundamental level. This is not something that would last only a decade. It could go decades. We recently reorganized teams so that each can focus on a specific field, narrowing down the sector further while expanding the geographic scope. The goal is to identify and invest in the best companies globally." Kim also explained that "We’ve earned substantial profits from companies like Dunamu, but that wasn’t the end. A brave, frank and truthful academic - Peking University professor 李玲, in a July 10 interview with Phoenix TV, stated the following - “我们当年做医改方案的时候，8000亿就能实现全民免费医疗。现在9万亿了，你连毛都没摸到。太多人得了不该得的钱” The long-time critic of the rampant and systemic corruption in China’s 医保 system speaks out again. This time on a media platform with state ties and ahead of the Third Plenum. 🌟 Kaohsiung Smart City Promotion Committee Annual Meeting Grand Opening 🌟 At this moment filled with innovation and collaboration, Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai, along with National Development Council Chairperson Kung Ming 'Lio, Foxconn Technology Group Chairman Liu Young-way, and NVIDIA Global Vice President and General Manager of Taiwan Jill S. Lin, gathered together to explore the development advantages and vision of Kaohsiung's AI industry. Jill S. Lin emphasized, "Kaohsiung will definitely become a model smart city." She pointed out that Taiwan has strong digital capabilities but still has room for improvement in the AI capability index. In the "Greater South Plan," Kaohsiung will play a leading role, promoting the goals of "expanding computing power," "linking domains," "attracting talent," and "demonstrating applications." What has changed for medical investment in China during this “Capital Winter”? I was in Korea last week but didn’t miss out on the Gaorong Capital高榕资本’s Annual Healthcare CEO Conference & Demo Day in Shanghai. It’s a close-door event hosted by Gao Rong, a leading VC in China, attended by representatives from their healthcare portfolio companies, LPs, and other investment partners. It was a great opportunity to share my thoughts on why Chinese healthcare innovators need a mindset shift to achieve their Go Global aspirations. It was also a valuable learning experience for me. Here are a few takeaways from the event: 1️⃣ New Opportunities in the “Capital Winter”: While people are talking about the "capital winter" in China, funding is still available there, and it's still more substantial compared to many other parts of the world. However, new IPO regulations have made exits significantly harder, leading investors to become more cautious and selective. They are increasingly exploring alternative opportunities, such as overseas deals and acquisitions of corporate assets. 2️⃣ Survival of the Fittest: Biotech companies that once saw big investments in China are now facing tough times for the subsequent rounds due to IPO challenges. Only those with strong resilience and adaptation are likely to survive, while others may disappear. This may not be a bad thing, as it's a natural process to eliminate excess and encourage more rational competition. 3️⃣ Increased Focus on Commercial Viability: With IPOs becoming difficult, investors are paying more attention to the commercial growth of their companies. They’re helping with business development, fundraising, and even global expansion. No one knows how long this "winter" will last, but investors are finding creative ways to support their portfolio companies and each other.  🌍 It’s all about adapting and staying strong! There's a noticeable shift towards aiming higher—choosing to scale as private companies or viewing an IPO as the start of the journey rather than the end, and increasingly eyeing global markets. This cultural shift is exciting and indicative of a maturing startup ecosystem. Here are some key points from the report in English. 1. Overall Fundraising: Total startup fundraising in the first half of 2024 (January to June) amounted to 325.3 billion yen, slightly down from 335.4 billion yen in the same period in 2023. The number of companies raising funds increased by 14% year-on-year, with 1,411 companies involved. 2. Shift to Seed and Early Stage: There was a notable shift in investment towards seed and early-stage startups, with large-scale later-stage fundraising declining. The average fundraising amount per company was 270 million yen, while the median rose by 55% to 83.6 million yen, indicating a shift in distribution towards smaller fundraising amounts. 3. Top Companies: The largest fundraising in H1 2024 was by Tier IV, which raised 8.5 billion yen in a Series B extension round for its autonomous driving software. Spiber, a company developing synthetic protein materials, raised over 10 billion yen for scaling production and global expansion. 4. Focus on Experienced Entrepreneurs: There is a growing trend of funding being concentrated on startups led by experienced entrepreneurs, especially in seed and early stages. Notable examples include Turing, which focuses on fully autonomous vehicles, and Orange, which is developing deep learning models for manga translation. 5. Diverse Fundraising Methods: A new trend in H1 2024 was the use of the J-Ships system, allowing non-public companies to raise funds from specific investors, contributing to the diversification of fundraising methods. Debt financing also remained active, with a total of 88.8 billion yen raised by 156 companies. 6. Investor trends: VC was the largest contributor to funds, followed by corporate investors. There was an increase in the number of new funds over 10 billion yen, with a total of 51 new funds established in H1 2024, amounting to 232.1 billion yen. 7. IPO and M&A Activity: The IPO market remained sluggish with 60 IPOs, of which 22 were startups. The median market cap at IPO fell to 7.7 billion yen. M&A activity increased, with 92 acquisitions or subsidiary formations and 33 business transfers, indicating that startups are increasingly opting for M&A as an exit strategy. 8.Government and Corporate Support: Significant government support continues to bolster the startup ecosystem, including tax reforms, funding from public institutions, and the promotion of public procurement for startups. #Japanbusiness #Japanmarket #startup
