What's striking is that only 1% of Japanese patients have had genomic testing, compared to 30% in the US. I think this venture could dramatically improve access to cutting-edge care. Masayoshi Son's vision of AI being 10,000 times smarter than humans in a decade might sound far-fetched, but initiatives like this show real-world applications. It's not just about cancer either they're eyeing expansion into neuropsychology, radiology, and cardiology. I'm cautiously optimistic about AI in healthcare. While it promises groundbreaking advancements, we must ensure patient privacy and ethical use of data. If SB Tempus can navigate these challenges, it could be a game changer for personalized medicine in Japan and beyond.

Last night marked the finale of our Healthcare x Digital (HxD) 2024 program at Nakanoshima Qross in Osaka, Japan. This year’s theme, "Transforming Healthcare - Collaborating in a Changing World," culminated in a pitch showcase of startups vying for support to enter the US market. As an American Chamber of Commerce in Japan-led initiative with US government backing, HxD offers an invaluable platform for these startups. For the third year running, Innovation Dojo Japan has been involved as one of the consortium members organising and supporting this program. The main roles we play are making connections and introductions to the program, both for sourcing global and Japanese startups from our networks and Japan based organisations who may benefit from and contribute to being a part of the initiative. Since we first joined the HxD program, one of my most rewarding roles has been bringing Osaka City, Osaka Prefectural, and Kobe City governments into the fold. Last night, this connection came full circle as Taro Tanaka, Director of Smart City Strategy for Osaka Prefecture, and Koji Deguchi, Manager of New Industry Creation for City of Kobe, joined the panel. Their presence underscored the program’s collaborative spirit, as they candidly shared intentions to support startups and the broader ecosystem. With classic Kansai humor, they lightened the traditional Osaka-Kobe rivalry, revealing genuine dedication to shared progress. This partnership wasn’t about closing a business deal or direct financial gains; rather, it brought a sense of personal reward and pride for Innovation Dojo, knowing we helped create new value within Japan's startup ecosystem. Those panelists from the government were complimented by the inclusion of Kunihiro Ohyama, Japan Healthcare Industry Lead at Microsoft and Dr. Junji Fukumori, Osaka Keisatsu Hospital & Nakanoshima Qross. After the panel discussion I joined the judging panel with friends Torsten Kanisch from AstraZeneca, Mari Ogihara from i2.JP, Christian Boettcher from EY, and from Eli Lilly, Yasuhiko Iida and Miyu Harada. Our task was to select 3 award winners from the finalists of the program; Congratulations to Seven Point One Inc., PITTAN and BiPSEE that were selected on the night to receive special support from the HxD group, Microsoft and SelectUSA! Kudos to ACCJ and LIASON for pulling the whole day together! ex Google CEO Eric Schmidt spoke at Stanford this week. Lots of nuggets here, but most interesting for the near term, Schmidt believes in the next year AI is set to make a big leap forward. He predicts AI will combine three important features: 1. Vast knowledge retention (1 million token models) 2. Text-to-action capability 3. Personal AI agent fleets While the full impact is unknown, everyone may soon command their own AI teams. Here's an example: Imagine you're developing new quantum computing algorithms. Your AI assistants could: - Continuously scan and synthesize global quantum research papers - Generate novel algorithm ideas based on this knowledge - Simulate and test these algorithms across various quantum architectures - Automatically document findings and prepare draft papers - Identify potential collaborators and draft outreach emails All initiated by a command like "Advance our quantum algorithm research." Pleased to see that Chairman Haksoo Ko and the PIPC of Korea published the Guideline on Processing Publicly Available Data for AI Development and Services.  It offers a set of sound principles and progresses Korea’s leadership in the AI policy space.  https://lnkd.in/exsdaaUb  Publicly available data is at the core of how AI models are trained and are important to model quality and functionality.  Such data plays a key role in fostering scientific discoveries and driving innovation. Turing CEO chases Level 5 autonomous driving tech — powered by artificial intelligence — by 2030. TOKYO — Artificial intelligence whiz kid Issei Yamamoto became famous in software circles for programming a computer that was the first to beat a grand master in the board game shogi. The ancient strategy game is often referred to as Japanese chess. But experts consider shogi one level deeper than its Western counterpart in complexity. Now, Yamamoto eyes another kind of grand master: Elon Musk, the self-proclaimed Technoking of the electric vehicle world. In 2021, Yamamoto founded one of Japan's newest mobility startups — the self-driving EV hopeful Turing — under a bold promise: "We overtake Telsa." The slogan, stenciled on the reception wall, is the first thing visitors see at its office. In his white T-shirt, black jeans and dark hoodie, the 38-year-old CEO looks more skate punk than neural network guru. His ambition is also something to behold. Yamamoto wants to deliver Level 5 fully autonomous driving technology — powered by artificial intelligence — by 2030. Along the way, he wants Turing to make its own superfast semiconductor chips — think Japanese version of Nvidia. Moreover, Turing eyes possibly manufacturing its own brand of EVs, with designs inspired by the torpedo-shaped bodies of killer whales. Three T's Then there are Toyota and Tesla, and, in Yamamoto's mind, one more T. "We internally say we would like to be one of three Ts: Turing, Toyota and Tesla. I am very conscious of that," Yamamoto said in a June 5 interview at Turing's headquarters on the fourth floor of an office block in central Tokyo. Such goals are mostly aspirational right now. "I think it will take 20 years," Yamamoto said. "But declaring that we will make such a journey is significant because there are very few Japanese start-ups that do so." Turing is a rare startup darling in a country better known for conservative conglomerates than nimble risk-takers. Be ambitious Turing has only 40 full-time employees and has raised just ¥4.5 billion ($28.2 million) in funding. Yamamoto reckons Turing will need at least $626.4 million to achieve Level 5 driving. Turing has yet to sell a product and has only two self-driving prototype systems. So far, it has collected only 100 hours of driving data, for about 3,000 kilometers (1,800 miles) of roads. But Yamamoto wants to expand Turing's payroll to 100 employees this year and demonstrate 30 minutes of door-to-door "full-self driving" in Tokyo by the end of 2025. In 2026, Turing wants to begin test production of its own high-powered semiconductors, which will be called Hummingbird, and run an AI system called Heron. There will also be another superfast language modeling chip called Swan. And tying it all together will be a cloud-based data server called the Gaggle Cluster. Turing wants to start mass producing its chips in 2028 and install them in its own self-driving vehicles in 2030.

【SCMP】Hong Kong fund strikes another AI deal with Beijing robot maker Galbot to boost industry - Hong Kong Investment Corporation is partnering with the start-up to create the HK-Galbot Embodied AI Lab, with an eye on hosting its IPO Hong Kong Investment Corporation (HKIC), a HK$62 billion (US$8 billion) government fund, has inked a partnership with Galbot, a Beijing-based humanoid robot start-up, in the latest high-profile move from the financial hub to shore up its artificial intelligence (AI) industry. The deal will see Galbot establish a local entity called HK-Galbot Embodied AI Lab, and the company will explore applications for humanoid robots in Hong Kong with pilot projects in industries including retail and tourism, HKIC CEO Clara Chan said on Friday at a signing ceremony. ... He Wang, an assistant professor at the Peking University’s Centre on Frontiers of Computing Studies in Beijing, founded Galbot in May of last year. The company completed an angel round of funding in June this year, raising 700 million yuan (US$96.3 million) from investors including Chinese food delivery giant Meituan, and major venture capital firms including Qiming Venture Partners and Lanchi Ventures. The company exhibited its first humanoid robot, named Galbot G1, earlier this month at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, China’s biggest AI show. Chinese media reports showed that the robot performed tasks including talking with visitors, picking up objects and placing them down at a targeted location.The Galbot G1 engaged with more than 800 visitors at WAIC, fetching objects more than 1,000 times with a success rate of 97 per cent, Wang said on Friday. “AI currently focuses too much on abstract concepts but not on physical labour,” Wang said, explaining why Galbot is building human-shaped machines. “If we want AI to perform physical tasks, it can’t be just a computer, right? It needs arms, it needs hands, it needs legs; it requires a physical body.” Wang said his company can make robots for a tenth of what it costs similar US companies because of the Greater Bay Area’s supply chain advantage. In 10 to 15 years, a humanoid robot purchase for a household could be comparable to buying a car, he said. Galbot’s products could first be used in retail to perform actions such as picking out items from delivery orders and passing them to a delivery person, Wang said at the media briefing. The company plans to have its robots in some Hong Kong shops within the next year or two, with a large-scale deployment within five years, he said. AI in Focus  Wearable Camera Detects Injectable Drug Administration Errors Collaborative researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, University of Washington, Makerere University and Toyota Research Institute have developed a wearable camera that uses AI to detect injectable drug administration errors. The system used video data sets from cameras strapped to doctors’ foreheads in different operating rooms with different backgrounds and lighting conditions and focused on the physicians’ hands. Then using deep learning, they trained the algorithm to detect visual clues like vial and syringe shape, label color, and font size to determine what the drug was. Currently, errors happen when a wrong vial is used or the drug label in the syringe is incorrect (vial swap errors) or when the label is correct, but the clinician administers the wrong drug (syringe swap errors). Hospitals use bar codes to prevent these errors, but in high pressure situations, these safeguards sometimes are forgotten. Approximately 1.2 million patients experience errors in injectable medications annually, at a cost of about $5 billion. Using the AI camera system, vial swap errors were detected in 99.6% of cases where they occurred and syringe swap errors in 98.8% of cases.  The next step is for researchers to incorporate the new system into smart eyewear that can provide visual or auditory warnings before a drug is delivered. Further, the new system provides opportunities for automatic documentation of drug injection information and reduced manual record keeping.
