  • Since its founding in July 2024, Musubi Tech has grown into a vibrant community of nearly 400 members. Our mission to foster multiculturalism and innovation among Japanese and international tech professionals has resonated, but what’s next? 🌍 What’s our vision? We envision a future generation of multicultural tech entrepreneurs and leaders in Japan who 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴.. These ambitious and mission-driven professionals understand that collaboration results in mutual growth. Together, they’re shaping a future where people in Japan can make educated choices to explore many opportunities and contribute meaningfully to society on a global scale. 🚀 Why multicultural tech entrepreneurs and leaders? Through conversations with product managers, engineers, designers, and more, we’ve seen how a global mindset can grow without leaving Japan. The contrast between corporate and 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽. By broadening this circle of influence, we aim to open doors to new opportunities and foster a truly global mindset in Japan. 📅 What’s ahead for 2025? ➖ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Continue to deliver high-quality gatherings that spark cross-cultural connections and inspire new ways of thinking. ➖ 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀: We’re launching initiatives like a multicultural training program for startups and scaleups that are preparing to go global or are already operating on the world stage. Musubi Tech’s primary focus is delivering value in two key ways: helping people make 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 through immersive learning activities. While our past events have emphasized connection building, we’ve had fewer opportunities to focus on learning—until Friday, 11/29. On this day, we debuted an exciting new event format: roundtable discussions. The topic? 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺: 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁. 35 participants gathered around tables, grouped by language proficiency, to discuss two key questions: 1️⃣ Diversity in teams helps stimulate innovation, but how have leaders managed the transition in supporting diverse teams? 2️⃣ Cultural values: what are the best workplace cultural values that attract and retain talent? This format encouraged participants to share perspectives, exchange lessons learned, and build empathy. One participant summed it up perfectly: “What makes Musubi Tech special is the type of people that they attract. I found myself in conversations with fully bilingual founders, Japanese entrepreneurs who've been in the game for decades, and international professionals – all sharing insights about building products and companies in Japan. And here's the thing: nobody was there for shallow chit-chat– they were there to have real conversations about tech, innovation, and the future of our ecosystem.” A huge thank you to our 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀: To 山川さん and Y Company: A business that connects professionals to create economic, social, and cultural value by expanding human potential. Thank you for providing the drinks! To Lisa Takagi and ovgo inc.: An American vegan bake shop founded on kindness—to ourselves, the environment, and the future. The cookies you provided were a huge hit! To Christy NG and the team at GOLDEN EGG Ventures: Offering capital, expert consulting, cross-border networks, and incubation space to empower growth. Thank you for providing the wonderful space! Lastly, a big thank you to the volunteers: Taka Kubo / Florian Geier / Iris Jiang / Miki Toyota / Annie Hoang 🌱 / Steven Klimek / ☀️ Sabrina Lau / Saki Tsujimastsu / Yuya Iwasaki We are working on summarizing the perspectives, insights, and techniques shared in the coming weeks, but for now, here are some photos from the event. • Well, that went by fast! Last night, Musubi Tech hosted a networking mixer in the heart of #shibuya. At the previous event, we experimented with Networking Bingo. This time around it was Speed Networking – people were lined up and asked to quickly introduce themselves within the 3-minute time limit before moving on to the next person. This allowed people during the larger free networking segment to connect with the people they felt had a common interest or goals. The room was electrified as entrepreneurial waves coursed through the air. You can see it in the smiles. You can see it in the expressiveness of every conversation. We also announced the pilot of our new Mentor Program, which Iris Jiang is leading. (Stay tuned for more details.) Lastly, we want to thank our new sponsor Y Company LLC (Thank you, Yosuke Sasaki, Daichi Nishihara, and Masaki Yamagawa). Be sure to check out their bar in Ginza called JIDAI https://lnkd.in/gcfreCWj Also, thank you to our friends at SivanS Lab (Thank you, Sivan Nakamura, Jean-Paul Okada, and Marielle Nishiura). https://sivanslab.com/ And lastly to our wonderful volunteers: Florian Geier, Iris Jiang, Yadanar Hlaing (Olivia), Aaron Bomar, Miki Toyota, and Amanda Arielle Lu. • Open Innovation = "A situation where an organisation doesn’t just rely on their own internal knowledge, sources and resources (such as their own staff or R&D for example) for innovation (of products, services, business models, processes etc.) but also uses multiple external sources (such as customer feedback, published patents, competitors, external agencies, the public etc.) to drive innovation." -The Oxford Review We're doing it, and we believe more businesses in Japan should too!

If you're in Tokyo, then I don’t need to introduce you to Axel Algoet—you probably already know him as the head of InnoHyve. What you may not know is that Axel and I have developed a unique relationship...A village, if you will. While we have different businesses we have similar aspirations to make an impact in Japan with the same kinds of people. How might we work together to influence of our shared belief: Bringing a diverse group of tech professionals together benefits the entire startup and tech ecosystem in Japan. While I can’t reveal our plans just yet, I want to share two key takeaways from our conversation: 1. There are so many startup and tech communities in Tokyo (that's a good thing), and often the same people attend their events. More partnerships should form to increase the ecosystem's reach and diversity. Can communities trust each other in the service for the greater good while still sustainably preserving their core business? Our opinion is YES! 2. Being a mission-driven business can be draining, and if not executed well, can end up in the same graveyard as others that tried to bridge communities in the past. Despite this, even if Musubi Tech, InnoHyve, and similar communities fade away in 10 years, 2 months, or tomorrow, are they still making an impact? Our opinion is YES! In the end, by establishing mutually synergistic relationships and putting skin in the game, we can foster connections that could open up new business opportunities, spur innovation through unconventional partnerships, or shift long-held beliefs with paradigm-breaking ideas. Even if we fail commercially today, we succeed in changing the world tomorrow. Thank you, Axel! #innovation #japan #startups #technology #multiculturalism #partnerships
