𝗜𝘀 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲’𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲-𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿? A few weeks back, media expected the formation of a de-facto monopoly in Europe, with rumours that Getir might acquire Flink. Now it seems that this deal is off the table while doubts about the model's profitability in Europe arose, or better resurfaced. News has it that Getir considers closing all markets except for their home-turf Turkey - where the Quick-Commerce hype began 8 years ago. Why Turkey?  My hypothesis is that the marketing- and labour-intensive Quick Commerce model can only be profitable in markets with a sizable middle class and a high Gini coefficient, indicating a significant wage gap between minimum wage earners and those who can afford luxury services. Turkey hits those boxes, similarly to Brazil and a few other countries. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱? 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗺𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆. If prices are far above supermarket levels, the demand declines rapidly, leading to underutilization. If prices are close to supermarket-level, the gross margins cannot cover the cost of picking & packing + last-mile delivery. Despite this, the stickiness of customers has proven to be an issue, leading to significant marketing spend of Quick-Commerce players which is 5-10X higher than the spend of brick-and-mortar grocers to retain volumes through CAC and CRC. What in my mind stands the best 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸-𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿-𝗮𝗽𝗽 that customers use every day. Imagine a food super-app offering scheduled delivery, click and collect, instant delivery, and restaurant food delivery - it’s an app people might use as a daily habit, driving down the marketing spend and driving up efficiency. KPMG tells us that 2024 was a year of strong recovery for the M&A market in Italy. More than 1,369 deals signed (+8% compared to 2023) for a value exceeding 73 billion euros (+9% compared to 2023). This trend, interest rates permitting, should continue in 2025. What world do we want to live in? This is a creative way to highlight overconsumption & accumulation of stuff / fashion items. This reminds me that my Vivobarefoot shoes have been going for 2,000 km and still going, while my "normal" running shoes became squishy after 500km... yet cost 30% more. Unsure what the exact carbon footprint of each shoes is, but my take is that the New Balance with 2-3cm of foam has a higher carbon footprint than my minimalist shoes, just because there's more materials in it and because it's not recycled or made with biomaterials. #sustainability #running #carbon #bioplastics #recycled #runningshoes #carbonfootprint

The future of economy needs women.♀️ The final day of Italian Tech Week zoomed in the challenges Europe's start-up ecosystem faces compared to the US, particularly the constraints to scale up due to inconsistent regulations. Despite this, most of the 24 leading startups are financially sustainable and driving significant job creation. As obvious with regard to speakers and audience one major issue remains: The underrepresentation of women in tech and startups. Frankly, in business and society at all.
