A Tale of Trust and Accuracy: Base vs. Instruct LLMs in RAG Systems Florin Cuconasu, Giovanni Trappolini, Nicola Tonellotto, Fabrizio Silvestri Abstract Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) represents a significant advancement in artificial intelligence combining a retrieval phase with a generative phase, with the latter typically being powered by large language models (LLMs). The current common practices in RAG involve using "instructed" LLMs, which are fine-tuned with supervised training to enhance their ability to follow instructions and are aligned with human preferences using state-of-the-art techniques. Contrary to popular belief, our study demonstrates that base models outperform their instructed counterparts in RAG tasks by 20% on average under our experimental settings. This finding challenges the prevailing assumptions about the superiority of instructed LLMs in RAG applications. Further investigations reveal a more nuanced situation, questioning fundamental aspects of RAG and suggesting the need for broader discussions on the topic; or, as Fromm would have it, "Seldom is a glance at the statistics enough to understand the meaning of the figures". 👉 https://lnkd.in/dxkpkqiS #machinelearning

💥💥💥 A Survey on Large Language Models with some Insights on their Capabilities and Limitations [170+pp] Andrea Matarazzo, Riccardo Torlone Abstract The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, particularly with the development of Large Language Models (LLMs) built on the transformer architecture, has redefined the capabilities of natural language processing. These models now exhibit remarkable performance across various language-related tasks, such as text generation, question answering, translation, and summarization, often rivaling human-like comprehension. More intriguingly, LLMs have demonstrated emergent abilities extending beyond their core functions, showing proficiency in tasks like commonsense reasoning, code generation, and arithmetic. This survey paper explores the foundational components, scaling mechanisms, and architectural strategies that drive these capabilities. Emphasizing models like GPT and LLaMA, we analyze the impact of exponential data and computational growth on LLM performance, while also addressing the trade-offs associated with scaling. We also examine LLM applications across sectors, such as healthcare, finance, education, and law, highlighting their adaptability and potential to solve domain-specific challenges. Central to this work are the questions of how LLMs generalize across diverse tasks, exhibit planning, and reasoning abilities, and whether these emergent abilities can be systematically elicited or enhanced. In particular, we provide some insights into the CoT (Chain of Thought) and PoT (Plan of Thought) abilities within LLMs, focusing on how pre-training data influences their emergence. Additionally, we investigate LLM-modulo frameworks that integrate external systems, allowing LLMs to handle complex, dynamic tasks. This paper aims to remedy the lack of satellite #hybrid #systems for solving the problem of #user #grouping by 1) formulating the #User #Grouping problem for hybrid constellations as a #Mixed #Integer #Linear #problem, and 2) developing a #scalable #methodology #tailored for #high-#dimensional scenarios. The Publications Office of the European Union developed model2owl for the eProcurement Ontology Project, but other industries and standardisation bodies have since recognised its potential. Its ability to automate complex processes and ensure consistency across multiple artifacts has made model2owl a valuable asset in various domains. 1. Adoption by SEMIC and other standardisation bodies SEMIC (Semantic Interoperability Community) is an initiative by the European Commission to promote semantic interoperability across the EU. ✅ SEMIC’s endorsement of model2owl SEMIC recognised the need for a tool to standardize building semantic data specifications across the EU. They saw that model2owl provided a perfect solution for ensuring consistency and coherence across different semantic standards. ✅ Harmonising standards across the EU One of SEMIC’s key goals is to harmonise semantic standards across member states. By adopting the UML conventions implemented in model2owl, SEMIC could streamline the standardisation process, ensuring that UML diagrams were drawn and interpreted consistently across different projects. 2. Expanding model2owl’s capabilities There is increasing demand to generate semantic artifacts like OWL and SHACL and technical artifacts such as XSD (XML Schema Definition) and JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) schemas. ✅ Meeting developers' needs While model2owl’s primary function is to generate semantic artifacts, developers are also growing in demand for the tool to create technical artifacts. This would allow developers to take these artifacts and immediately start working with them without manually creating XSD or JSON schemas. ✅ Bridging the gap between semantic and technical interoperability layers This requires careful coordination between semantic engineers and developers to ensure the generated technical artifacts are consistent with the underlying semantic models. As model2owl expands its capabilities and gains recognition from standardisation bodies like SEMIC, it will play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of semantic data standards across industries.
