One of the most trusted scientists in pharmacology, prof. #Georgi Momekov , endorses the topic for #metamizole effectiveness based on extensive clinical trials and decades of real life data of usage across the world. Its’s great opportunity for all the countries which by any other reason, but not really scientific driven decision, oppose to introduce metamizole as high effective painkiller for patients in need. It’s really striking how a decades of proven safe usage of metamizole across the world, and heaving #OTC status in many countries, with hundreds of millions polulation, still in some countries it’s kept under #Rx, or even not in use at all, based on unclear “fears” and more “cultural” prejudices than actual safety data. The negligence of the existence of excessive postmarketing data in some markets is authority driven limitation that have to be challenged for the good of the patients for access to affordable and effective analgesic treatment. #selfcare #painkillers #analgesics

Headlining this week's CHC Newsflash: The MAT Q2 2024 update from DB6 shows the global store retail market grew by 4.0% in the 12 months to end-June 2024. Globally, this represents a continued slowdown from MAT Q1 2024 (+4.4%). The writing on the wall becomes clearer and clearer. Value growth in consumer healthcare in the past 12 months (4%) is lower than the IMF’s estimate of the global rate of inflation in 2024 (5.9%) proving that there is very little underlying growth in the marketplace. The “So What?” is that our industry needs to sharpen up marketing strategies, bringing more truly innovative products to market, so that consumers will decide to spend a little more of their hard-won cash in staying healthier. Subscribers to our CHC New Products Tracker know that the level of true product innovation is very low. Across the past 14 years a total of 45,000 new CHC products have been launched in the Top 20 countries, of which less than 5% are gamechangers. In 2023 that number went down to 3%. This must stop! We need better products or many consumers will abandon brands for generics or private labels. I’ve often said that M&A does not increase the market, but merely rearranges market shares. But sometimes it does. Over the past few years, we've seen numerous instances of unloved brands, sometimes with substantial global scale, sold by MNCs to upstart marketers or private equity firms. What then happens is that the new owner adds “love” to the KPIs and the brand soars. Procto-Glyvenol was sold by Novartis to Recordati and sales grew from €6mn to €31mn in 10 years. Here at NHC, we were involved in supporting Dr Reddy’s to acquire the Nicotinell franchise and I'm pleased to say that the transaction was completed last weekend. I’m sure Dr R is ready to smother the brand with love, but it's difficult to believe that the potential new owners of Sanofi Consumer Health -- to be known as Opella -- could manage the business better than the current team. Of course, it may be that the new owner will be prepared to take more risks in terms of investment or claims, we will just have to wait and see. And Finally, hearty congratulations to PAGB, the consumer healthcare association, which took top honours in the Best Trade Association category at the recent 2024 Memcom Excellence Awards. At the end of October, while on holiday in Milan, I had the good fortune to visit the Fondazione Prada, a contemporary art museum. I was trying to put work behind me, take in cultural sights, and enjoy the many other pleasures of Italy. I didn't realize the museum also showcased some of the scientific research the foundation funds. As Prada states, "Art and intellectual research are essential to the enrichment of our daily lives and help us understand the changes taking place inside us and in the world." I wandered over to what I thought would be an art exhibit, entitled "Preserving the Brain: A Call to Action." I found there not "art" but a scientific exhibit showcasing recent findings from a massive ongoing research initiative focusing on the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases - specifically, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, and Multiple Sclerosis. The research had all been presented at a recent conference, also funded by Prada, as part of this "Human Brains" project. Within a stark exhibition space, I found myself watching an eloquent video by pioneering neurologist Giancarlo Comi, Scientific Director of the program, who, alas, died on 26 November 2024, a month after my visit (see photo). The rest of the exhibit featured massive scientific posters - like those one views at a scientific conference, except these were blown up to an incredible size and uniformly laid out, with data graphics re-rendered by NYC design firm 2x4. I walked around and read as many of these posters as I could. In the exhibit materials, the late Professor Comi stated: “We have only recently begun to unravel this complex skein and have realized that some of the environmental causes are roots of the disease that we plant ourselves, both individually and as social and political choices. Prevention therefore becomes fundamental to both reduce the risk of disease and improve its progression. . . . The exhibition linked to the conference aims to extend the fundamental aspects of prevention to the entire community and intends to do so through collaboration with the international scientific community and patient organizations and associations. These actors will explore some of the common and specific issues of different neurodegenerative diseases, which will also be the subject of discussions and meetings throughout the duration of the exhibition. To effectively tackle neurodegenerative diseases, it is essential that the entire community, in all its facets, be involved.” The foundation says it is "driven by the idea that culture is useful and necessary as well as appealing and engaging." Those of us working in medical communications must always bear that in mind. The research that forms the backbone of our work is most effective when it's made as appealing and engaging as possible, for all. This was a fascinating reminder to stumble across while I thought I was on holiday. The exhibit runs through 7 April 2025.

Years ago, as a young student exploring Italy, I wandered into a little café and ordered a simple Diet Coke. The barista, with an air of quiet pride, asked if I wanted ice. Then, as if I’d ordered the finest vintage, he carefully chose a glass, placed a few ice cubes inside, and poured the soda with such deliberate grace that it felt like a ritual. He set it down on a coaster, carefully garnished it with a thin slice of lemon and handed it to me with a reverence that left me speechless. It was just a Diet Coke, but he treated it—and me—as if it truly mattered. That moment stayed with me, not because of the drink, but because of the care, respect, and joy he infused into such a small act. It taught me a lasting lesson about service and leadership: sometimes, the smallest gestures have the biggest impact. It’s not always about the grand gestures or big decisions—it’s about making people feel seen and valued in the everyday moments. As Thanksgiving approaches, I find myself thinking back to that barista and all the people who bring a little extra kindness and intention to their interactions. They remind me that real leadership is about creating meaningful experiences for those around us, both at work and in life. This season, let’s take a moment to remember and thank those who’ve made a difference in our lives, whether through grand gestures or simple acts of kindness. Headlining this week's CHC Newsflash: TPG and Blackstone have partnered to work on a joint bid for Bausch + Lomb, according to the UK Financial Times, citing people familiar with the matter. The newspaper reported last month that the eye care business was working with Goldman Sachs advisers to explore a sale. This attracted interest from other private equity groups including Advent International, KKR, CVC Capital and Hellman & Friedman, although they have dropped out of the running, according to sources. Private Equity is becoming the dominant player in our industry’s M&A. I’ve spoken to several firms in the past few weeks, who tell a similar story: healthcare is an important growth pillar, but most are underweight in consumer health and with a little gentle persuasion can readily see our charms. Now TPG and Blackstone are looking to make a bid for Bausch’s eyecare subsidiary, while CD&R and PAI are scrapping over who will take majority control of Sanofi’s CHC business. With very few exceptions, M&A doesn’t grow the market, those exceptions being related to companies with underdeveloped or neglected brands – and we see plenty of those in our own M&A boutique. Financial institutions bring rigour to the companies they own, but this often involves cutting out longer-term NPD, especially Rx-to-OTC Switch, and brand-building. But where PE excels is using a “buy to build” strategy to give a marketer international scale. Cooper is a fine example, and its PE owner CVC championed the acquisition of the Viatris OTC business which has put Cooper on the European map in a substantial way. But Private Equity is not a long-term market builder. For that we have to search for a different type of company, such as Valbiotis, which launched its first product in 2024 after many years of basic research. This truly innovative product is a 100% natural dietary supplement for the management of mild-to-moderate LDL hypercholesterolemia and is a good example of what the future holds for evidence-based VMS brands. To quote co-founder Sébastien PELTIER: “Valbiotis has all the attributes to … establish itself as a future European champion in 100% plant-based dietary supplements with strong scientific credentials.” It is not surprising that the company is in advanced discussions with a view to signing international licensing agreements with players in the nutrition and healthcare sectors. Bringing these to a successful conclusion will be a template for serious competitors at the cutting edge of VMS. How likely are doctors across Europe to engage with pharmaceutical or medical device advertisements that have been personalized for them? According to CMI Media Group’s recent Media Vitals study, the percentage of doctors highly/very likely to engage is significant. In fact, 91% of doctors in the UK, including GPs and a variety of specialists, said they would engage; followed by 86% in Italy. Engaging with personalized content requires a different approach than traditional media or rep outreach. It requires an addressable and agile omni-channel approach, leveraging deep audience insights, automated technology, agile content development, precision HCP reach data and an orchestrated paid/owned strategy!
