Our paper "Sustainability in Blockchain Development: A BERT-Based Analysis of Ethereum Developer Discussions" with Matteo Vaccargiu, Sabrina Aufiero, Rumyana Neykova, Silvia Bartolucci, has been accepted to #EASE2024 in Salerno. We conducted an in-depth topic analysis, enabling us to study the underlying themes and trends in developers' conversations about blockchain technology, especially regarding energy use and sustainability. We assessed the sustainability of the identified topics using the five dimensions outlined in the Sustainability Awareness Framework (SusAF): economic, social, individual, environmental, and technical. How Innovation Policies in Europe and Italy Contradict Economic Theory Francesco Ferrante Economic theory posits that public investment in innovation should diminish as projects progress through higher Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). Projects at lower TRLs (1–4), representing the early stages of research and development, suffer from market failures because the knowledge they generate is often non-excludable and non-rival. This creates significant "appropriability" challenges, discouraging private investment despite high social returns. In contrast, higher-TRL projects (6–9), being closer to commercialization, face fewer market failures and are more likely to attract private capital. Thus, the optimal allocation of public funds should prioritize early-stage, high-risk innovation to maximize societal benefits and stimulate transformative breakthroughs​. However, the reality in Europe and Italy often follows an inverted logic. Public funding disproportionately favors high-TRL projects, leaving early-stage research underfunded and reinforcing the so-called "valley of death" for innovation. This misalignment hinders Europe’s potential for scientific and technological leadership, particularly in transformative sectors like clean energy, despite its competitive advantage in generating patents​.

As a Professor at #USI in #Lugano, what are the main challenges and opportunities in teaching blockchain and cryptocurrencies? "The blockchain is not “a” technology. It is a set of disciplines. The mathematics of cryptography and algorithms, the technology of platforms and programming, the economics of game theory, markets, and accounting on distributed ledgers. It is not easy to find students who have, or who are ready to develop, this background. Even though USI, which has a focus on economics and finance on one side, and technology and computer science on the other, starts off quite well in this regard. Then any student will delve deeper into one part and less into another, and will add to these more or less in-depth knowledge, those other skills needed by the community, communication, marketing, social, legal. But it is important in this sector to keep an open mind, never to be afraid of technology or the evolving regulatory framework, to know more even if you can never know everything. It lays out initial suggestions and consolidated feedback from local AI ecosystems to understand opportunities and enhance ongoing AI development initiatives underway. The #G7 Leaders’ #Summit in June 2024 welcomed the Italian Presidency’s decision to establish the #AI Hub for #Sustainable #Development, in collaboration with UNDP. As affirmed in the G7 Leaders’ Declaration, the #AI Hub aims to enable multi-#stakeholder #partnerships to support local AI #digital ecosystems, strengthen capacities to advance AI for sustainable development, and complement existing initiatives including the AI for Development Donors Partnership. This document, co-authored by Aapti Institute is important because it highlights the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in combating #climate #change. It showcases practical examples of how AI is being used to #predict and #mitigate climate-related #disasters, enhance environmental #sustainability, and support vulnerable #communities. By illustrating AI's potential in environmental #protection, the article underscores the significance of technological #innovation in driving impactful climate #action and inspiring further advancements in this critical area. Innovation follows a principle like Archimedes: it responds in a new way to ancient human needs, but once immersed in society, it transforms it, and in turn, society alters innovation itself. In this sense,the digital economy has pushed to the extreme the transformation of human beings into entities that are both producers and consumers, making them both “machines” on the "world’s assembly line" and seemingly “happy users” in their own "wonderland." This is also driven by powerful tools designed to make the target market more homogeneous and predictable. So far, market as well as people, has shown a tendency toward homogenization and predictability. In this scenario, the "Taylor Swift model" thrives: the rebellious spirit of the '60s no longer works. Instead, the product sells itself by adapting to its audience, saying, "Look at me, buy me, I am just like you!" This success stems from the ability to leverage technologies invisible to the public, such as digital twins and artificial intelligence, which shape both culture and business in ways that are profoundly profitable for a few, but largely unknown to many. The Author believes that, to better shape our future, the concept of sustainability must be expanded. This should encompass not only the environmental aspect but also, for example, the education of managers and leaders, along with a solid definition of business ethics.
