5G Physical Layer (5G Series - Part 17) In 5G, radio resources are flexibly assigned in both time and frequency, allowing for optimized connectivity. For instance, with subcarrier spacing (like 15kHz in a numerology of 0), we see how downlink resources are allocated, beginning with essential signals: Synchronization Signals: Help users initially access the network. SSB (Synchronization signal block) consists of PSS, SSS, PBCH & PBCH-DMRS. Multiple SSB used in NR for different beams with distinguished pattern. It can also be used by the UE for RSRP and RSRQ measurements. Broadcast Channels: Provide vital network information. Control Channels: Manage scheduling and coordination. Shared Channels: Deliver user data, aided by reference signals that assess channel quality. To illustrate, let’s look at a high-frequency band (50MHz channel bandwidth) with a 10ms frame. Visualizing it on a grid: X-axis (time) shows OFDM symbols (slots). Y-axis (frequency) represents resource blocks (RBs), which vary with subcarrier spacing (e.g., 66 RBs at 60kHz spacing). 5G's flexible resource allocation, tailored by channel needs and spacing, is pivotal for enhanced connectivity and performance. The challenge has been and continues to be, DAS has been overused and acts as a HAMMER to solve for use cases it is not a good fit for. Innovation continues to be somewhere between slow and non-existent, embracing value creating solutions is marginalized, and we continue to look to the next technology evolution (5G, 5G Advanced, 6G, #6Greset) to solve the problem that has been facing the Enterprise for the last 10 years. Protecting revenue, margins, growth, network differentiation, etc., etc., etc. are the justifications for continuing the failed model, all while continuing to perpetuate the issues that work against everyone’s best interest. Elimobile merges with NTMobile to Create a Joint Italian MVNO The Italian mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Elimobile, has announced a merger agreement with Nextus Telecom, the company behind the MVNO NTMobile. According to the two companies, the goal of the new joint venture between is to reach 100,000 active SIMs by the first half of 2025, with the start of operations scheduled for January 2025. The announcement of the merger comes two months after NTMobile recommended its users, to port to the Elimobile, after issues with the mobile virtual network aggregator and enabler (#MVNA / #MVNE) Plintron and host operator Vodafone which first led to the blocking of outgoing SMS and then data connections. In addition to three service verticals (eMBB, uRLLC, mMTC) in the early 5G Network, two more service verticals (or Network Slices in the right context) are added in later releases- 𝑽2𝑿- "Vehicle-to-everything (V2X)" was introduced in R16 and it denotes the seamless exchange of data among various transportation elements and traffic-related sensors, characterized by high bandwidth, low latency, and utmost reliability. The forthcoming 5G mobile networks will play a pivotal role in furnishing connectivity for both vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. 𝑯𝑴𝑻𝑪 - HMTC, or High-Performance Machine Type Communication, was introduced in R17 and it represents a category of 5G networks enabling efficient communication between machines and the network. Within the framework of 5G, networks are engineered to accommodate diverse needs, such as machine-type communications, throughput, latency, availability, and high-performance communications. Great new reference from 6WIND at EOLO in Italy, where 6WIND and a consortium of vendors (Mavenir, Thales) are participating to the #FWA (fixed wireless access) Core architecture of Eolo. The new network will enable Eolo to acquire new broadband customers beyond the reach of their fixed network using their 5G mmwave radios. 6WIND is supplying a virtualized distributed user plane function (#dUPF) unique in the market enabling ultra low latency and thereby better customer experience. 6WIND has significant experience building packet data networks for 4G (Packet GW) and 5G (UPF) for some of the world leading OEMs. A distributed edge based UPF brings innovation to a new level and provides a path to future developments which monolithic network elements cannot satisfy. Achieving this in the 5G era is no easy task. Recently, at a Web 3.0 conference, I was asked, "Why do we even need to protect 5G? Isn't it secure by default, like blockchain?" "What a stupid question," I thought at first. But I erased it immediately and realized it is a good, thought-provoking question! 🤔 Raising awareness and improving understanding of technological dependencies, potential challenges, and security issues is crucial to prevent misuse and exploitation.
