♻️ Corporate Progress on Circular Economy Implementation: Insights from a Large-Scale Study ♻️ Circular economy is often presented as a transformative approach for corporations to improve resource efficiency and effectiveness by narrowing, slowing, closing, and regenerating resource flows. However, the actual implementation of these strategies across industries and geographies remains unclear. 📊 This article, written by Nancy Bocken, Jaan-Pauli Kimpimäki, Paavo Ritala and Jan Konietzko, reveals key trends found through a large-scale survey of senior corporate leaders: 🔹 Closing the loop is the most widely implemented strategy, followed by narrowing and slowing the loop. 🔹 Regeneration, which holds the greatest potential for long-term impact, is the least adopted. 🔹 Within corporate operations, narrow the loop strategies—such as efficiency improvements—are far more common than other approaches. 🔹 Supply chains tend to begin with narrowing strategies, while products and services functions prioritize closing the loop. ⚠️ While progress is evident, many corporations focus on incremental gains rather than systemic transformation. To fully realize the benefits of a circular economy, businesses must move beyond low-hanging opportunities and embed regenerative strategies into their core operations. 🌍 How can organizations accelerate this transition? 💡 Closing the loop at the local scale: Investigating the drivers of and barriers to the implementation of the circular economy in cities and regions 🏙️ Cities and regions can accelerate the transition to a circular economy through strong political leadership, structured collaboration, financial incentives, and place-based policies tailored to local conditions. Clear regulatory frameworks also play a crucial role in ensuring long-term success. 🎯 However, fragmented governance, inconsistent policies, financial instability, and risk-averse investment behavior pose significant challenges. Additionally, low consumer awareness, lack of training, and resistance to behavioral change hinder adoption. Weak data collection and evaluation metrics further complicate efforts, making it difficult to measure progress and optimize policies. ♻️ This study, by Sébastien BOURDIN and Nicolas Jacquet, emphasizes the need for better coordination, investment, and awareness-building to unlock Circular Economy's full potential at the local level. 🌿 The Future of Bio-Based Textiles in Europe 🌿 The European Commissions’s Knowledge Centre for Bioeconomy (EU Science, Research and Innovation) has conducted an in-depth analysis of the European bio-based textiles sector. This study explores the sector’s complexity, key challenges, and opportunities. Key insights include: 🎯 Progress in viscose and lyocell production from sustainable cellulose sources. 🎯 Innovations in natural fibre processing, benefiting both people and ecosystems. 🎯 How better logistics and lower costs could boost the competitiveness of bio-synthetics. With nearly 700,000 jobs and €25 billion in added value, bio-based textiles are a major pillar of Europe’s bioeconomy, enhancing competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability. The EU is already driving this transformation through strategies like the EU Bioeconomy Strategy and Circular Textiles Strategy. Thanks to Horizon Programme investments, research on bio-based fibres has advanced significantly—but there’s still work to do on durability, recyclability, and microplastic release. 📖 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gRU5jh2s Paulien Harmsen Mikael Skrifvars Greet Janssens-Maenhout Maria Teresa Borzacchiello Andrea Camia Anu Korosuo Åse Eliasson
