A combination of some of these plants in the granaries is a current practice in certain localities of northern Cameroon. The aim of the present work was to analyze the impact of the combinations of the essential oils of Vepris heterophylla (Rutaceae), Ocimum canum, and Hyptis spicigera (both Lamiaceae), the three most used local aromatic plants because of their insecticidal activity and their repellent effect on Sitophilus oryzae. The present work revealed that these plants are rich in monoterpenoids. The GC/MS analyses have shown that monoterpenoids represented 65.5% for H. spicigera, 92.1% for O. canum and 47.0% for V. heterophylla. ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to determine the following characteristics of the essentials oi... more ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to determine the following characteristics of the essentials oils (EOs) obtained from two Thymus endemic species such as Thymus moroderi and Thymus piperella: (i) their chemical composition and (ii) their effect on the growth of several bacteria related to food spoilage, such as Listeria innocua, Serratia marcenscens, Pseudomonas fragi, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Aeromonas hydrophila, Shewanella putrefaciens, Achromobacter denitrificans, Enterobacter amnigenus, Enterobacter gergoviae, Alcaligenes faecalis and Leuconostoc carnosum. The EOs were chemically analysed and identified by GC and GC–MS, while the agar disc diffusion method was used to determine their antibacterial activities. The concentration effect was also determined. The major constituents of T. moroderi EO were camphor (26.74%), 1,8-cineol (24.99%) and myrcene (5.63%). In the T. piperella EO the main constituents were carvacrol (31.92%), para-cymene (16.18%) and γ-terpinene (10.11%). T. piperella EO was much more effective than T. moroderi EO, and had a much greater effect on the Gram-positive bacteria than on the Gram-negative bacteria.

The aim of the present study was to assess the antimicrobial properties of secondary metabolites isolated from A. liebrechtsiana. A new secoiridoid derivative, anthocleistenolide B (1), along with three known compounds, the monoterpene diol, djalonenol (2), the xanthone O-glycoside, decussatin 1-O-β-D-glucopyranoside and the fatty acid, dotriacontanoic acid (4) was isolated from the leaves and bark of this plant. Their structures were elucidated by extensive analysis of spectroscopic (1D and 2D NMR) and mass spectrometric data. The isolated compounds were screened for their antimicrobial properties against five strains of bacteria (two gram positive: Staphylococcus aureus 29213, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 25922 and three gram negative: Escherichia coli ATCC51299, Proteus mirabilis (isolate), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa QC76110), but all were inactive.

A new triterpenoid saponin (Mimonoside D: 3-O-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-3β-hydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic a... more A new triterpenoid saponin (Mimonoside D: 3-O-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-3β-hydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid 28-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranoside ester (1)) was isolated from the aerial parts of Mimosa diplotricha Sauvalle together with nine known compounds: 7,4ʹ-dihydroxyflavone (2), kaempferol (3), lupeol (4), betulinic acid (5), β-sitosterol (6), β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (7), lutein (8), 5,2ʹ-dihydroxy-7,4ʹ,5ʹtrimethoxyflavone (9) and vitexin (10). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic (1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance) and high-resolution mass spectrometric data as well as by comparison of their spectral data with those of related compounds. Compounds 2, 7 and 8 had already been isolated from M. diplotricha, while compounds 3, 4, 5 and 6 have been isolated from other Mimosa species. Compound 2 moderately inhibited Proteus mirabilis (MIC = 32 µg/mL), weakly inhibited Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC = 64 µg/mL) and very weakly inhibited Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 128 µg/mL) and Enterococus faecalis (MIC = 128 µg/mL).

A previously unreported gallocatechin glycoside, (2R,3S) 4'-methylgallocatechin 3-O-α-ʟrhamnopyra... more A previously unreported gallocatechin glycoside, (2R,3S) 4'-methylgallocatechin 3-O-α-ʟrhamnopyranoside (1) and an unseparable mixture of two previously undescribed dihydromyricetin glycosides, (2R,3R) 4'-methyldihydromyricetin 3-O-α-ʟ-rhamnopyranoside (2a) and (2R,3S) 4'-methyldihydromyricetin 3-O-α-ʟ-rhamnopyranoside (2b) along with three known compounds were isolated from the n-butanol soluble fraction of the stem bark of Olax subscorpioidea Oliv.. Their structures were elucidated by detailed spectroscopic analyses, including 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, 1 H-1 H COSY, HSQC, HMBC, NOESY, HR-ESI-MS and chemical methods. The crude ethanol extract, the fractions, and some of the isolated compounds were screened for their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. They showed significant antioxidant activities with EC50 ranging from 6.29 to 18.19 µg/mL in 2,2diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and EC50 ranging from 85.77 to 86.39 mmol FeSO4/g in ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) methods compared with 2.29 µg/mL and 3.52 mmol FeSO4/g for the positive control (ʟ-ascorbic acid). Nevertheless, no inhibition was observed against the tested bacterial strains at a MIC less than 256 µg/mL.

We evaluated in this work the antimicrobial activities of the extracts and some isolated compounds from the seeds of Psychotria succulenta Hiern. (Rubiaceae), a Cameroonian medicinal plant traditionally used to cure microbial infections. The ethanol extract was prepared by maceration and extracted with ethyl acetate and n-butanol. Phytochemical investigation of the seeds of Pentaclethra macrophylla led to the isolation of a mi... more Phytochemical investigation of the seeds of Pentaclethra macrophylla led to the isolation of a mixture of two new aromatic monoterpene glycosides, pentamacrophylloside A (1a) and pentamacrophylloside B (1b), together with six known secondary metabolites: Comososide (2), secopentaclethroside (3), caffeoylputrescine (4), β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5), 2-hydroxymethyl-5-(2-hydroxypropan-2-yl)phenol (6), and sucrose (7). Their structures were elucidated mainly by extensive spectroscopic analysis (1D and 2D NMR), high-resolution mass spectrometry and by comparison of their spectral data with those of related compounds. The extracts and compounds 3 and 4 were screened for their antimicrobial activity. The n-BuOH fraction showed a weak effect against three microbial strains: Candida albicans (MIC: 256 µg/mL), Enterococcus faecalis (MIC: 512 µg/mL), and Proteus mirabilis (MIC: 512 µg/mL) while no significant inhibition was observed for pure compounds when compared to ketoconazole and ciprofloxacin used as references. Furthermore, the ethnobotany and pharmacology of this plant are reviewed, and the chemophenetic significance of the isolation of the above secondary metabolites is discussed. This is the first report on the isolation of aromatic monoterpenoids from a plant of the genus Pentaclethra.

However, its use is still to be scientifically documented and validated. Hence, the aim of the present work was to evaluate the antiplasmodial activity of the dichloromethane-methanol (DCM-MeOH (1:1)) crude extract, their hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and methanoli fractions, as well as the isolated chemical constituents. The chemical study of the DCM-MeOH (1:1) crude extract of F. vallis-choudae figs led to the isolation of fifteen (15) known compounds identified based on their spectroscopic data [one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry] and by comparison of these data with those reported in the literature. Some of the isolated compounds were assessed in vitro for their antiplasmodial activity against Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine-sensitive 3D7 (Pf3D7) and multidrug-resistant Dd2 strains. The dichloromethane fraction exhibited very good antiplasmodial activity against both strains with IC 50 values of 13.86 μg/mL and 8.18 μg/mL, respectively. Among the tested compounds, wighteone (2) was the most active against P. falciparum 3D7 (IC 50 = 24.6 ± 1.5 μM) and Dd2 (IC 50 = 11.9 ± 2.4 μM) strains. The obtained results could justify the traditional uses of F. vallis-choudae against malaria. Wighteone appears to be the most active ingredient. However, further consideration of this compound as starting point for antimalarial drug discovery will depend upon its selectivity of action towards Plasmodium parasites. Highlights • 15 (fifteen) compounds were isolated from the dichloromethane-methanol extract of Ficus vallis-choudae. • Their structures were determined on the basis of their spectroscopic data. • The dichloromethane fraction showed promising activities on the Pf3D7 and PfDd2 strains with IC 50 values of 13.86 and 8.18 µg/mL, respectively. • Wighteone was the most active compound against PfDd2 (IC 50 = 11.9 ± 2.4 μM).

The essential oils were extracted by water-distillation and their chemical composition identified by Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detection (GC-FID) and Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Toxicity assays of essential oils against A. obtectus were carried out by fumigation in which insect pests were exposed fumes of the essential oils, and mortality recorded after 6, 12, and 24 hours. Salmonellosis for example remains among the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. This study aimed to evaluate the antisalmonellal potential of extracts, fractions, isolated compounds and semi-synthetic flavonoids from Tristemma hirtum P. Beauv. Bioguided fractionation by column chromatography of the EtOAc and n-BuOH fractions led to the isolation of eleven compounds including two new esterified glucuronide flavonoids namely: luteolin-3′-O-β-D-glucuronopyranosylbutyl ester (1), a mixture of compound 1 and quercetin-3-O-β-D-glucuronopyranosylbutyl ester (2). Chemical transformation mainly based on the prenylation of 6-hydroxyapigenin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5) afforded four new semi-synthetic flavonoid derivatives namely: 6, 4'-O-diprenylapigenin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5a), 8-Cprenyl-6, 4'-O-diprenylapigenin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5b), 8-C-prenyl-4'-O-prenylapigenin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5c), 4'-O-prenylapigenin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5d). The chemical structures of these compounds were assigned using NMR techniques, mass spectrometry and by comparison of their data with reported ones. The antisalmonellal activity was assessed by determining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) using serial microdilution methods. The results showed that the MeOH extract and EtOAc fraction were active against all the bacteria tested with MICs ranging from 24 to 1536 µg/mL. Seven isolated compounds and three semi-synthetic compounds tested showed MIC values ranging from 16 to 256 µg/mL. Compounds 1, 3, 5a, 5c and 11 displayed the most potent antisalmonellal properties but were generally less potent than those of reference drugs. The activity of extracts and isolated compounds could be used as the starting point for the development of alternative phytodrugs against salmonellosis.

Phytochemical analysis of the mature fruits of Furcraea tuberosa (Agavaceae) resulted in the isol... more Phytochemical analysis of the mature fruits of Furcraea tuberosa (Agavaceae) resulted in the isolation of a new bisdesmosidic spirostanol saponin (1), along with eight known steroidal glycosides (2–9), one known phenolic carboxylic acid ester (10) and three known flavonol glycosides (11–13). The structures of these compounds were assigned using a combination of 1D and 2D NMR techniques including 1H, 13C, COSY, TOCSY, HSQC and HMBC NMR, and confirmed by mass spectrometry. Thus the new saponin was elucidated as (25 R)–6α-(β-D-glucopyranosyloxy)-5α-spirostane-3β- O-[(6- O-hexadecanoyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside]. The literature survey revealed that most of the steroidal saponins isolated have shown potent cytotoxic effects against various human cancer cell lines and the results are herein reviewed.

Thus, substances protecting hepatocyte membranes from lipid peroxidation are of great importance in the management of hepatotoxicity and hepatitis. The present work deals with the in vitro hepatoprotective activity of the methanol extract of Desmodium uncinatum, its sub-fractions, the major isolated compounds and some of their semi-synthetic derivatives in order to study structure activity relationships. Using hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2)-induced lipid peroxidation of hepatocyte membranes as a model, the hepatoprotective-guided phytochemical survey of the methanol extract of aerial parts of D. uncinatum was carried out by successive column chromatography. One of the most active compounds (Isovitexin) was chemically transformed to yield new semi-synthetic. The identification of isolated and semi-synthetic compounds was performed using NMR techniques, mass spectrometry and by comparison of their data with those reported in the literature. The n-butanol fraction was the most effective (IC 50 : 22.9 µg/mL) compared to the crude methanol extract (IC 50 : 43.6 µg/mL) and other fractions. The n-butanol sub-fractions FA (containing non-phenolic compounds) and FB (mainly containing phenolic compounds) exhibited respective IC 50 of 14.36 and 128.2 µg/ml.

Their structures were elucidated mainly by extensive spectroscopic analysis (1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance) and high-resolution electronspray ionization-mass spectrometry, as well as chemical methods and comparison of their spectral data with those of related compounds. Compounds 2/3 and 4/5 were evaluated for their antiproliferative activity on Hela cells, and no significant effect was observed.

In Cameroon, many dietary spices are used by traditional healers to cure several diseases such as... more In Cameroon, many dietary spices are used by traditional healers to cure several diseases such as cancer and microbial infections. Aframomum daniellii, Dichrostachys cinerea and Echinops giganteus are Cameroonian spices widely used as flavourings and as food additives. Moreover, they are traditionally herbal remedies employed to treat several diseases, as well as to control populations of insect pests. In this research, we analysed the chemical composition of A. daniellii, D. cinerea and E. giganteus essential oils and we evaluated their larvicidal potential against larvae of the filariasis and West Nile virus vector Culex quinquefasciatus. The essential oils were obtained from different plant parts by hydrodistillation and their composition was analysed by GC-MS. The three spices exhibited different volatile chemical profiles, being characterized by 1,8-cineole, sabinene and βpinene (A. daniellii), geraniol and terpinen-4-ol (D. cinerea), and silphiperfol-6-ene and presilphiperfolan-8-ol (E. giganteus). Results showed that the highest larvicidal toxicity on Cx. quinquefasciatus was exerted by D. cinerea essential oil (LC 50 = 39.1 μL L −1), followed by A. daniellii (pericarp essential oil: LC 50 = 65.5 μL L −1 ; leaves: LC 50 = 65.5μL L −1 ; seeds: LC 50 = 106.5μL L −1) and E. giganteus (LC 50 = 227.4 μL L −1). Overall, the chance to use the D. cinerea essential oil against Cx. quinquefasciatus young instars seems promising, since it is effective at moderate doses and could be an advantageous alternative to build newer mosquito control tools.

Aqueous and ethanol (100 and 500 mg/kg respectively) extracts of dried root barks of D. arborea, sildenafil citrate (1.44 mg/kg), trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO, 20 mg/kg) and distilled water (10 mL/kg) were orally administered to 4 weeks streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Mount latency and frequency (ML, MF), intromission latency and frequency (IL, IF) and post-ejaculatory interval (PEI) were measured by ejaculatory series during 90 min once a week for 4 weeks. Glycemia was determined at the beginning and at the end of the treatment. D. arborea did not show any major antihyperglycemic effects.
