Peri-implantitis is a multifactorial disease, and one of its triggering factors may be the presence of excess cement in the soft tissues surrounding an implant. This descriptive study evaluated the composition of foreign particles from 36 human biopsy specimens with 19 specimens selected for analysis. The biopsy specimens were obtained from soft tissues affected by peri-implantitis around cement-retained implant crowns and compared with the elemental composition of commercial luting cement. Nineteen biopsy specimens were chosen for the comparison, and five test cements (TempBond, Telio, Premier Implant Cement, Intermediate Restorative Material, and Relyx) were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Introducción: Los insectos del género Lutzomyia son vectores biológicos de bacterias, protozoario... more Introducción: Los insectos del género Lutzomyia son vectores biológicos de bacterias, protozoarios y virus que atacan tanto a los seres humanos como a los animales. Tienen importancia sobre todo por cuanto las hembras, que son hematófagas, transmiten las diversas formas de leishmaniasis. En Colombia diferentes estudios han comunicado la distribución geográfica de estos dípteros. Con el presente trabajo se informan las especies en distintas localidades y se incluyen varios lugares sin registros conocidos antes. Materiales y métodos: Los ejemplares de este estudio se capturaron cuando pretendían picar a los colectores y con trampas donde el cebo era la luz o un animal. Varios especimenes se atraparon en sitios de reposo. A los flebótomos así obtenidos se les trató con diversos sistemas para poder disecarlos y montarlos entre lámina y laminilla a fin de hacer las identificaciones hasta especie. Resultados: A partir del estudio de 716 representantes, 124 machos y 592 hembras del género Lutzomyia, en 46 sitios de 29 municipios, 11 departamentos, fue posible identificar 33 especies. Discusión: Se amplía en forma considerable la distribución geográfica de los miembros del género Lutzomyia en varios sitios de Colombia. Se menciona la importancia de algunas especies antropofílicas en su responsabilidad como transmisores de enfermedades, sobre todo de las distintas leishmaniasis y se destaca la necesidad de estudios sistemáticos y taxonómicos a fin de fijar sus papeles en la diseminación de agentes patógenos que afectan a los seres humanos.

With this premise, an organization that opens the doors so you can investigate how it was implementing the Performance Management System and the concrete results so far had been made with their implementation was sought. The company that facilitated the completion of this work is Life (Ecuadorian Industrial Pharmaceutical Laboratories). Details of the research can be found during the development of this thesis.

Introduction: Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) is considered one of the most successful orthopaedic i... more Introduction: Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) is considered one of the most successful orthopaedic interventions used for joint replacement. The purpose of this study was to characterize the particular surface features common to retrieved THA implants, in order to point out principal characteristics that lead to their failure. Methods: A set of fourteen retrieved implants was studied, their designs varying from metal-on-polyethylene (MoP), ceramic-on-polyethylene (CoP) and metal-on-metal (MoM). All specimens were analyzed using digital microscopy (Keyence VHX2000). Particularly corroded and scratched areas were further analyzed under Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM, JEOL 5600), and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDS, JEOL 5600). Results: The surface analysis revealed certain patterns of features. The implants were divided in their components (cup, liner, head and stem), each of which was studied for common characteristics. The list was compiled from a survey of publishedliterature, and from new records obtained by removing mites from live wild birds and dried museum skins. A total of 107taxa of feather mites identified to the species level were recorded, 86 species from the literature and another 21 speciesreported here for the first time from Colombian birds. At the generic level, 52 taxa were identified, including 39 new re-cords for the country. These feather mites are from 22 families, among which 13 are from the Analgoidea and 9 from thePterolichoidea. The families with the most feather mite species known from Colombia are the Proctophyllodidae and Pter-olichidae with 22 and 23 species, respectively. Associations of feather mites with 192 bird species of 43 families in 20orders were found. These birds represent only 10.2% of all bird species recorded in Colombia. We conducted a study in a dengue-endemic area of Colombia to evaluate the dynamics of transmissio... more We conducted a study in a dengue-endemic area of Colombia to evaluate the dynamics of transmission of dengue viruses during and after epidemics. Information was simultaneously gathered about occurrence of infection in humans and mosquitoes every three months in four cities with endemic transmission. Viral isolation was confirmed in 6.7% of the persons and most were asymptomatic. Adult mosquito and larvae house indexes were not found associated with increased burden of disease. The only entomologic indicator related to dengue infection in humans was the pooled infection rate of mosquitoes. Aedes aegypti infection rates showed significant differences between the epidemic (10.68, 95% confidence interval [CI] ס 7.04-15.62) and after epidemic periods of the study (6.15, 95% CI ס 3.46-10.19). In addition, Ae. albopictus were also infected with dengue viruses. Increases in mosquito infection rates were associated with increases in human infection rates in the following trimester.

El presente ensayo está enfocado en el Sector Gastronómico que es un renglón muy vulnerable de lo... more El presente ensayo está enfocado en el Sector Gastronómico que es un renglón muy vulnerable de los servicios donde podrían ocurrir incendios. Para esto debemos tener en cuenta varias medidas de prevención que influirían de manera directa a disminuir el riesgo de Incendio. Se acudió al Benemérito Cuerpo de Bomberos de la Ciudad de Cuenca en donde se pudo investigar sobre los requisitos que se exigen para la apertura de un Restaurante, obteniéndose como resultado, que en la mayoría de los restaurantes de la ciudad no se cumple a cabalidad con estas exigencias, poniendo en riesgo a este sector muy vulnerable. A uno de los objetivos que se quiere llegar con este ensayo, es que las personas tomen conciencia en cuanto a la Prevención de Incendios, ya que están poniendo en peligro sus vidas, las de sus empleados y las de sus clientes que acuden a los locales. Se encuentra vigente una Ley de Defensa contra Incendios, que se debe cumplir, sin embargo, solo para obtener permisos de funcionamiento se cumple en parte con esta normativa. Así como también se considerará todos los elementos a cumplirse dentro de la Norma INEN 439:1984, en la que se indica toda la señalización necesaria que se debe utilizar para Prevenir Accidentes Mayores como es el caso de los incendios.

Estudio clinico y radiologico de seguimiento durante el primer ano postoperatorio de 165 artropla... more Estudio clinico y radiologico de seguimiento durante el primer ano postoperatorio de 165 artroplastias totales de rodilla tipo NexGen (Zimmer). A priori, se indico a cada paciente un tipo de protesis segun el estado funcional de la rodilla, originandose asi dos grupos: pacientes con PTR CR (cruciate retaining), si se pretendia conservar el LCP, y pacientes con PTR LPS (legacy posterior stabilized) si se pretendia sacrificarlo. Los resultados al ano de la intervencion ofrecen una gran mejoria en la evaluacion clinica de ambos grupos, siendo mas evidente en el grupo LPS, que llega no solo a igualar, sino incluso a superar los resultados obtenidos por el grupo CR. Funcionalmente se constata una recuperacion en ambos grupos, sin que existan diferencias entre ambos. En la discusion se presenta la controversia existente entre los distintos investigadores sobre los motivos para conservar el LCP o para sustituirlo. Como conclusion principal se observa que, tras el estudio clinico, funcional y estadistico realizado al ano de la intervencion, la conservacion del LCP no aporta mejores resultados que su sacrificio, con lo que la hipotesis nula, en la que se afirma que preservar el LCP favorece la funcion de la rodilla tras la protetizacion de la misma, quedara rechazada.

The Collection of Arthropods of Medical Importance of the Universidad del Valle, Facultad de Salu... more The Collection of Arthropods of Medical Importance of the Universidad del Valle, Facultad de Salud holds 14,877 specimens of Lutzomyia from Colombia, which corresponds to 76 species and subspecies. A list of these species is presented with the number of females, males, and Colombian departments (states) of origin. In addition, 12 more species from eight other countries are indicated as represented in the Collection. The value of this material, which includes type specimens, is discussed, as well as the importance of preserving samples in biological collections.
