I have been reading Karthik's blog https://lnkd.in/gA7ikw3t since many years - this week he has written of "Layered Learning", a concept I must confess that I had never heard of before. While reading through the blog, it struck me that I may have been exposed to this kind of learning in my first job straight out of college and taken a liking for it already. After being assigned to my first project and staring at the vast ocean of code waiting to be fixed and extended, it did not take me long to realise that the academic coding that I had learnt during engineering was merely a small well that I had dipped my toe in. The host of classroom trainings organized by the company were, personally for me, a tedious affair given the zillion concepts that were flashed one after the other rapidly in isolation before any real absorption could happen. This is where I am truly grateful for two of the brightest folks I have met in my career, Krishna Subbian and Thiyagarajan Masilamani, who despite having spent just a few years in the industry then, exuded the enthusiasm of us freshers but with wisdom that exceeded many of the seniors. They gave me a simple learning method - download a simple open source application codebase, compile/build the code and execute the application. Assume you now own that application and add breakpoints nearly in every function/method and debug through it. For the next few months, I just did that in all my free time at work and over weekends at home. Soon enough debugging helped me understand what's really happening conceptually at the code level but importantly with the satisfaction and confidence of being able to do it via a "real world" user application. When Karthik talks about instant gratification that he got from playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star from Day 1 and learning musical concepts from it, it was pretty similar for me to be able to debug and execute a fully functioning application and learning programming concepts while wading through its codebase. Once, I was done with one application fully, I moved onto more and more complex applications - adding layer after layer of understanding and simultaneously improving my skills to take up more complex tasks in my assigned project. In essence, layered learning does not require you to master concepts in a sequential manner before you can attempt to do something tangible. Just learn everything at a basic level and then keep adding the details layer on layer till you become an expert. Remember that you may not be perfect from Day 1 but you will be far more interested as you would have got that tiny glimpse into what you are truly capable of eventually from Day 1 itself. **Unforgettable memories from Garvebhavi Palya, near Kudlu Gate (Hosur Road)...** Every time I cross Hosur Road, nostalgia hits me from my days at the Novell office. **An Amazing Workplace (90s and Y2K Best in Bengaluru):** - **Incredible People:** From juniors to seniors, architects, distinguished engineers, and Novell fellows, the camaraderie was unmatched. - **Rich Culture & Leaders:** The culture and leadership at Novell were simply outstanding. - **Efficient Transportation:** Who can forget the blue Novell buses that made commuting in Y2K a breeze? - **Cherished Moments:** Annual days ever year, weekend official team outings ever year like wayanad, chikbellapur,etc., quaterly business lunches at manipal county, official cross functional team building activities at Pegasus institute , family open office hours, charity events, sports days at Jyoti nivas college... the list goes on. - **Team Bonding:** Excellent bonds were formed with team members, creating countless memories. Loads of innovation challenges, patent related innovation drives from leadership, weekend company hiring activites and door was always open for weekend enthusiasts to come over to office for any needs...courier (and India post) demographic identity for many including me... excellent network (Novell) and R&D labs at office, unique handheld gadgets pda, palm, hp, before Steve Jobs introduced iPhone and before android..like futuristic innovative hardwares...true and real RnD work... - Countless swags, like laptop bags, mugs, diaries, tshirts, patent shirts, jackets. sweatshirts..I had a count of 25 wardrobe to wear to office office day in every color like red (Novell color), navy blue, green, white. cream, cyan, beige, grey, etc..still in my closet... Truly grateful for the countless memories and the strong bonds formed during that era. I am glad to have been an ex- Novelite. --- I hope this captures your sentiment well! 𝙂𝘼𝙍𝘽𝘼𝙂𝙀 𝘾𝙊𝙇𝙇𝙀𝘾𝙏𝙄𝙊𝙉 - 𝙇𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙆𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙬𝙖𝙡𝙖! 🛢️ 🧠 𝐉𝐚𝐯𝐚 𝐁𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐭 : Day 1 of #30DaysOfJava Ever called the kabadiwala (scrap dealer) to clean out old newspapers and bottles piling up in your house? Every now and then, we need to get rid of things we don’t use anymore to free up space. In Java, this cleanup process is handled by something called Garbage Collection. Just like the kabadiwala goes around looking for items you don’t need, the Garbage Collector (GC) in Java hunts for objects in memory that aren’t being used by your program anymore. Once it finds them, it clears them out to free up memory, making sure your program runs smoothly without any memory clutter. Now, imagine calling the kabadiwala too frequently; he might start interrupting your routine. Similarly, if the Garbage Collector runs too often, it can slow down your application—a phenomenon called GC overhead. On the flip side, if he comes too late, your home will start overflowing with junk, just like memory issues in Java! 📌 Key Takeaway: Java’s Garbage Collector is like your friendly neighborhood kabadiwala, keeping your memory clean. But timing is everything—clean up too often, and you’ll slow down, wait too long, and you’ll run out of space! #java #oracle

We do have a 45 TOPs NPU in Copilot+ PCs. But it’s not all about speed. You can get speed with GPUs too - even faster! But it’s about efficiency. It’s about battery life on your laptop that you are only allowed to fly (in the US) with a 100WHr battery capacity. Its about minimizing thermal throttling. Its about sustainability. When you get 45 TOPs with single digit watts, you can compute almost all the time. Something like Recall would totally trash your device experience when not offloaded to efficient hardware even if it is able to ‘run’. Phi Silica would take over your system resources without efficient hardware and if you want generative AI running in your games, you may soon end up thermally throttled.

It is a great news that Microsoft announces investment in India to accelerate adoption of AI. It creates jobs and can help countries solve many problems. But it's misuse can also cause lot of financial damages and worst cases can be a threat to human life. Is India or any other country in the world having good regulations around AI and it's usage?
