It is exciting to share that we have now moved to IND-enabling pre-clinical stage with an indigenously developed clinical asset in oncology which is based on exosomes. In 2015, ExoCan Healthcare was founded as the first exosome focused Indian company; and perhaps first five comapnies globally as well. Deep biotech in those days, in fact even today, was non-investable and VC community remained centred around ecommerce, retail, or digital space in this part of the world with negligible knowledge of biotech life cycle. As they say, when it's winter burn the wood and watch it play fire besides. This seemed relatable as a start-up founder for me, as we pivoted, waited, and persisted with back to back non-dilutive funding rounds. It's been a great joy to steer ExoCan all these years while we kept on inventing first-in-class exosome technologies around enrichment, clinical grade purification, formulation, and a core technology to load therapeutics cargo inside the exosomes ex situ. Success??? Here the successful story of biotech company by Reetu Yadav. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, an Indian entrepreneur, founded Biocon, one of the largest biotechnology companies in Asia, despite facing numerous challenges early in her career. Early Life and Education Kiran was passionate about science from an early age and wanted to become a brewmaster, inspired by her father, who was a brewmaster himself. After graduating with a degree in Zoology, she pursued a brewing course in Australia and earned a Master’s degree in Malting and Brewing. Despite this, when she returned to India, she struggled to find a job in the brewing industry as it was male-dominated, and no company was willing to hire a woman for the role. Turning Adversity into Opportunity Kiran could have given up on her dreams, but she instead turned her attention to biotechnology, which was in its infancy in India at the time. In 1978, she founded Biocon in her garage with a small seed investment and a vision to leverage biotechnology to produce enzymes and, later, pharmaceuticals that could benefit society. Challenges and Breakthroughs In the early days, Kiran faced skepticism from banks, clients, and partners. She struggled with infrastructure, funding, and finding skilled employees. Yet, she persevered, investing in research and innovation. One of Biocon’s major breakthroughs was the development of India’s first recombinant insulin, which made life-saving insulin more affordable for diabetic patients. Her determination paid off, and Biocon became a leader in the biotech industry. The company went public in 2004, making Kiran the wealthiest self-made woman in India at that time. Today, Biocon continues to innovate in the field of biotechnology, focusing on affordable healthcare solutions for diseases like cancer, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. For a layman, -To make new medicines, -You need new MOLECULAR ENTITIES which -Help in forming new chemicals. 🔘As stated by our previous Health Minister- "In the US, there is an existing pipeline of 500-600 new molecular entities at any given point of time." Why? ✅This is where the REAL money is!! We can rather aim to spend $20B instead of $100B, in 10-15 years by the time our GDP hits $10T.🔥 But I must say that our govt. is also playing it very SMARTLY. ▪85% of💵is being INVESTED ▪In 164 projects in ▪The range of ₹1-125Cr. ▫Yes, it's an INVESTMENT not a grant. ▫The govt. aims to pick 5-10% equity once ▫ The project becomes commercially viable. This seems like an awesome strategy: ✨If 50% of the projects become commercially viable - then the successful projects would be worth ₹42,500Cr ($5.1B) - if the govt. picks 5% equity in these projects. ✨This'd work like Y Combinator - once the govt. chooses these startups, - there'd be so much FOMO in the bigger players. ➡️Priority:1 (P1) Find New Molecular Entities ➡️P2: Develop Complex Generics & Biosimilars ➡️P3: Innovate Personal but Precise Therapeutics ➡️P4: R&D medical Devices🩻 ➡️P5: Find Orphan Drugs for rare diseases ✅Next 5yrs would be crucial to set the building blocks. Most of the detection methods such as PET scan & histopathological evaluation of physical examination rely on finding the presence of tumours which show up stage 3 or 4. End result, late diagnosis & poor prognosis with  < 50% 5 year survival rate! I've recently interacted with several startup companies, and a common topic of discussion has been cash flow challenges. Many startups grow to a turnover of 4-5 crore but then face stagnation in their growth trajectory. Pooling resources—whether that means shared infrastructure, talent exchange, or even joint product development—could allow startups to conserve cash and boost their value offerings. Strategic partnerships or resource-sharing networks could be pivotal, especially for early-stage startups facing financial constraints. Here are some examples: 1. Shared Office Spaces : Startups operating in the same industry or region can rent a shared office space rather than separate ones. 2. Shared Technology Infrastructure : Rather than each building its own tech stack, startups can create shared technical infrastructure, such as cloud environments, testing servers, or collaborative development platforms. 3. Joint Talent Pooling and Talent Exchange : Two startups with different peak times of talent demand can share specialized resources like designers, software developers, or marketing professionals. For instance, if a product team has spare capacity, they could work part-time for another startup. 4. Collaborative Product Development or Research : Startups with complementary products can jointly fund research and development efforts.
