SCOOP: Urban Company has turned profitable at PBT level (profit before tax) on a consolidated basis in the last month. The development will potentially smoothen its public listing plan which is likely to happen in 2025. My story:

Indian venture market has exploded. Someone reported that there are 800+ funds/networks/syndicates/ accelerators active in Indian venture market now. Not sure, if that number is correct but if you are an early stage tech founder on your fundraise journey, chances are, you would meet hundreds of people. While majority of the fund houses are doing incredible work and shaping the ecosystem. There are certain kinds of investors you need to identify & avoid to save time and stay focused: Sharing from my personal experience, top 5 such cohorts to avoid and the takeaways for the founders: 1. Data collectors: At early stage, you don't have historical data to present. Your projections are just that, Projections. I wasted one whole week discussing with a prospective angel investor on why the CLTV to CAC ratio is x, and not y. Takeaway: Discuss high level strategic numbers only without going into the details. None of the projections would be accurate anyway when rubber hits the road. 2. Document collectors: Met few folks, who would watch from the fences and ask for n number of documents, data rooms, statements without sharing the purpose of the ask or even revealing their investment intent. Takeaway: It is supposed to be a bi-directional conversation. Say 'no' often, till the time, an official relationship is established. 3. Valuer (! investor): At early stage, valuation is a function of multiple parameters, the opportunity itself, the team, or anything else except steady cash flows, because you don't have much. I wasted another week with a prospective investor trying to justify valuation, had to shut down that conversation, after both of us started quoting Aswath Damodaran and his valuation principles. Takeaway: Too much content on the internet for both parties anyway. Shouldn't be a bone of contention at early stages. 4. Facilitators posing as investors: Met numerous people, who would go to any lengths to pose themselves as serious investors, even buying paid media articles. Only to reveal at the last: The success fee. Takeaway: Avoid facilitators until Series A 5. Brokers posing as market makers: People posing as market makers sharing tons of gyaan on LinkedIn but are actually deal brokers looking to make quick %. Personal experience: Two rounds of conversation happened and then out of blue, they added a third party in the mail trail, someone who facilitates mergers & acquisitions. There wasn't even a single instance in the past conversations where we indicated any such intent. Takeaway: Avoid name & shame in public but at least share within founder communities. #venture #fundraise #startups #investing

Challenging the Traditional "Right to Win" Narrative in Startups 🤔 The startup world often talks about a founding team's "right to win" - typically measured by domain expertise in the industry. But I wonder if this is a narrow view. Consider these examples: 🏨 Ritesh Agarwal built OYO without any hospitality experience - just a deep understanding of budget travelers' pain points as one himself 💄 Falguni Nayar created Nykaa at 50 with no direct experience in beauty/retail - but she understood the Indian woman consumer deeply 🍲 Deepinder Goyal Kalra built Zomato after noticing long lines for food services while working at Bain. The "right to win" can come from multiple sources: - Deep personal experience as a consumer - Pure passion to solve a problem - Obsession with product excellence - Fresh perspectives unburdened by industry assumptions This hits close to home for me. As I build Elfina Health, I often get asked on my "right to win". But my personal mental health journey has given me something equally valuable - authentic user perspective and an unwavering commitment to solving this problem. Sometimes, being too entrenched in an industry can blind you to innovation. The most disruptive ideas often come from outsiders who see problems with fresh eyes and aren't constrained by "how things have always been done." Yes, there are domains like deep tech where technical expertise is crucial. But for many problems, especially in B2C, understanding your users' pain points intimately and being relentlessly focused on solving them can be your strongest "right to win." Quick commerce in India is the biggest consumption story in the world right now. Billions of 💰 are being invested by US and other VCs to change the way how millions of Indians shop 🇮🇳 . It is SUPER INTERESTING to see how this market is evolving literally under our eyes daily. The Morning Context has an excellent piece on it today. It got me thinking of 5 things. But first, the article makes the point that QC works in India because of high population densities, an unorganised and inefficient legacy supply chain and low rider cost 🏍 to average order value. Their article is posted in the comments section. Here's what came to my mind: 1. Viruses can permanently change consumer behaviour: Would the acceleration in QC adoption have happened if rapid digitisation hadn't been driven by the pandemic. High population densities, legacy supply chains and cheap labour existed pre-covid as well. 2. Did your family astrologer predict the QC future we are building: Predicting the future is always hard. More square footage was being built for malls under the hypothesis that India will transition from unorganised retail to a formal retail format. While for some formats this will continue, think white goods, for soft categories it looks like brick and mortar might be the most expensive and risky way to start. Wonder if in a country so into astrology any astrologers predicted the rise of QC because.... 3. Consultants and analysts were clueless: Entrepreneurs build the future, and consultants at best are slow followers. Go back and look at their reports from 10 years ago, no one was talking about the rise of QC. Everyone was on and on about how underpenetrated organised retail is and writing bullish stories on listed brick and mortar retail companies. 4. Will the marriage of fast fashion and quick commerce be all song and dance: What's in store here? Shorter supply chains like Shein, cheaper products like Primark, and quicker inventory turns via QC or risk of higher returns and inventory bloat. Time will tell. 5. FMCG companies should hire tutors to study disruption theory, but not from Byju's: Many of the MNC's don't have a playbook they can get from their global parent companies - QC is a uniquely Indian phenomenon. If their Indian listed businesses trade at 50-70x PE multiples, their future is pricing in so much growth and stability. "All of the future is in the price" as one of India's leading equity investors responded to my chat message. What will crack first, FMCG multiples or QC momentum? Abhiraj Singh Bhal, dropped a couple of interesting insights during Z47's "the consumer unicorn blueprint" chat a day before: 1/ While marketplaces can offer you distribution, you don't end up owning the consumer. and till the time you don't own your consumer, you won't be able to create businesses with healthy margins. Period. Any brand with a Q-commerce only or market place+Q commerce only strategy will find it increasingly difficult to create sound businesses. He offers a way out but with a caveat: 2/ To create a fundamentally sound business, with good margins- one has to go the d2c way. He talked about the challenges of creating his own D2C brand "native" in the water purifier and allied category. The biggest challenge he talked about is why should an end consumer trust you and buy directly from you? When he has the option to buy from an Amazon or a Flipkart with easy returns and complete trust in the process if anything goes wrong? That he says is the biggest roadblock which makes it 100X difficult to scale as a D2C brand. But that's also the only way to create a profitable business. Everytime i hear such inputs from industry veterans, it just reaffirms the mission we are onto at Simpl. Our 1-tap checkout is not about giving credit but rather about bridging that missing trust in a d2c brand dot com. It's about giving that feeling of safety while purchasing anything online, the same nostalgic "bharosa" feeling we have from buying from our neighborhood khata store :)

Business Model: On the week Swiggy debuted on Stock Exchanges, another food delivery company was sold for mere pennies... Grubhub which was valued at $7.5Bn in 2020 was sold for $700 Mn... It was beaten in competition by DoorDash and UberEats.. My understanding is that platform business are generally winner take it all markets... How does one define "Value" created by startup & its founders? Isn't this the most asked question and most often this gets answered in form of valuation {"Soonicorn"/ "Unicorn"/ "Decacorn" so on & so forth} and we all know that the valuation driven "status" is akin to the "flickering flame in a stormy night". I believe that: In the world of startups, where data holds sway, performance is the compass that shows the way. Real life stories tell the tale, revealing what's true, success should be measured by what startups can do. A startup's true value is felt when it's gone & its absence revealing what once shone. We are still very early in our pursuit of creating a long lasting positive impact in the life of millions of gamer's across the global south. Buying gold / silver coins on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Trithiya come under low frequency - low complexity purchase category. It is a seasonal product bought generally during specific occasions. Zepto Blinkit Swiggy lapped up this opportunity and started selling this with the benefit of quick delivery. No wonder the sales picked up quite well. I wonder how much would it have impacted the sales of larger eComm players. Sales trends from swiggy is already out. The e-commerce startup Meesho has raised $275 million in a new funding round, pushing its valuation to approximately $3.9 billion. This funding, part of a larger round expected to exceed $500 million, includes secondary transactions. Notable investors like WestBridge Capital and Norwest Venture Partners are participating in this round, joining Meesho's impressive list of backers, including Meta, Fidelity, Peak XV, Prosus Ventures, B Capital, and SoftBank. However, Meesho faces increasing competition, with Amazon India recently launching Bazaar, a special store featuring affordable fashion and lifestyle products.
